good question, my vote seems to mean nothing on the temperature gauge

It doesn't move when I vote either lol

What it is...when you post a deal other people vote it hot and cold, the hotter it is the more power your vote on others deals will have, if that makes sense.
I've been here a while now but don't have good voting 'power' because I am not a good deal poster.

That is quite worrying, as you guys have high reps.

Have you ever posted a deal?? I believe your vote rating is *mostly* based on how high the retings of deals you've posted previously have been. If you haven't posted any deals then you probably don't get any input...

I see loupomm has posted many, some of which have reached high temperatures like the limo ride one... so it looks like we may have a problem here. Not sure if Admin is aware of this or not...

Well, the temperatures of the few deals loupomm has posted have not gone up very high really, but hopefully admin can take a look and make sure there is no problem.

I think I recall admin saying your rep goes towards about 1/5 of your voting power.

Your voting rep isn't constantly updated, there's a script that does it. I'll double check it's running ok.

so until i say usefull things and help other people or post good deals... my opinion on a hot deal means nothing?

fair enough i guess, stops people who want to promote their deal by signing up loads of times, or stops people from voting cold just because they want to ruin the deal

Yes unfortunately so. Sorry if it sounds rough but using reputation is the easiest way to judge people's voting opinions.

understandable, hence what i said afterwards. i'll earn my way up! in time.

iv got 35 points currently but it won't budge by even 0.1 degrees

I have over 600 rep, and my vote counts for 0.2 degrees :-(

But most of it comes from posting Hot deals, check my post here for more info, go down to 'The Temperature Gage':

Thats why my voting power is low, only posted a couple of deals so far.....

Would be interesting to know what and how much influence a mod has.
I've got 1641 points, and i can change the temp by around 9-10 degrees

Mods - We're each a wee bit different I think. I have 6500 rep points. My hot vote is worth 30, my warm is about 7.

But then I have quite a few deals that went very hot as well.

Thanks for that Emma
S'pose it does make a difference the large points and hot-temp deals you've posted, but must admit, i'm not sure i've posted a high temp thread, just got rep from folks saying thanks really

Mine rarely makes a diff... and voting cold has put things up multiple times also. Very random.

Why when you click 'filter deals' on main page, and only change the criteria to filter by 'Temperature' does it show most in temp order but not all ? a few odd ones out of sequence end up in there.

Also Emma, could you confirm, is it 30 degrees needed to make it onto main page ?

Thanks.

It's roughly 30 degrees, it's not an exact science. It also goes on things like page views, replies... as replies are worth 0.2 degrees, but i don't think that goes towards the count for the front page. It's a bit hard to explain. Even more so when i don't know what I'm talking about.

The temperature list also takes some sort of time issue as well, something chronological going on there too.

Is it possible you were voting on a recent item, and someone else voted hot at the same time you voted cold, so it looked like your cold made it higher ?
So much activity on here all the time, no doubt someone will have replied to your post before I finish typing....

^^^ Yes, I think you're right with that Richie.

well ive posted a few deals but nothing great enough to get a high temperature, whenever i find something worth posting someones beat me to it :(, i did post about 20 competitions today lol, tho you dont vote on temperature on those! ive clearly got too much time on my hands.......

Thank you for explaining, surprising how much goes into working out the calculations. When I first came onto this site, I assumed very vote counted the same, there's so much more to it....

Not that many times in a row.. and not at the times I'v had it.
ie ~6 am with noone else viewing the topic on the forum?

Besides i'v had a fair few high temp deals (dominoes/ powerplay as two recent examples)

Would love to know what formula we are working on?

Does that mean you can just keep replying to your own posts to raise the temp ;-)

0.2 isn't much... would take quite a few replies! But even if you made 100 replies to make the post over 30 degrees, you wouldn't see it on the FP.

lol @ that thought

does the 0.2 stay even if you delete the post after? could be exploited :P

Very true, I wouldn't try it (Honestly!) but if you raised it to say 10 or 12 maybe others would vote thinking it's a good deal, i'm sure some people do that, just follow the trend!

Sheep :P

I'll make sure the script is running later tonight.

The formula for your vote weight (reputation) is majority based on historical temps of deals posted and then forum rep (the green boxes), number of posts and time registered.

The formula for increasing temp on a deal is rep of the person leaving the vote, number of views and number of replies.

Working fine for me... Have 600 rep points and I just increased the temp on a deal 9 degrees

Your welcome, but hey, we were always talking global, like a Planet - not a Continent occupied by Colonials:w00t: :w00t: :w00t: . In 400 years time there will still be the works of Shakespeare- (the master plagerist), Bach, Beethoven and, aw shucks ,U know who studied by academia. There will probably still be another 'latest' Beatle album release on sale. Betcha our decendants will buy it too. Sleep tight.  :-D  :whistling: :giggle:

Glad U peeped.

definately not going up when i vote, just voted the birthday pack hot, temperature didnt budge

Admin is looking into it

Looks like my vote is also worth... 0

I understand the need to keep the forum balanced but surely someone who takes the time to post a deal (regardless of how people vote on it) is worth something? :?

I agree, it does seem a bit unbalanced. It looks like you must post your own hot deals in order to get your vote to count at all. Surely people that have made say over 100 forum posts, been registered for several months by now would have a good opinion on whats a 'good deal' ?

I would have thought the main thing to stop is newcomers, or people making extra accounts to vote.

I just tried voting again, and this time I didn't even make 0.2 degrees I managed earlier, it did nothing. Maybe it also depends on what the current temp is, we have more effect if the temp is currently very low or something ?

Just my thoughts....

I guess the time registered thing would be against me.. but with a few 3(non decimal! :P) digit deals & over 1000 rep points I'd like to be able to move things at least .2 degrees :P
