You've not got the chats on mute have you? Not sure if it's possible to mute all at once though.

If you are using an Android phone then go to Settings.. then Apps.. then scroll down to Whatsapp. Tap on that app and then check Notifications. It should state Normal. If it doesn't tap on that and untick 'Block all', and make sure that 'Allow peeking' is ON.

Are you on the same number?

Just to stress the issue isn't with getting notifications, the chat isn't receiving any messages when I go into the specific chat at all.

what do u mean old chat or new stuff old one won't come up I think it's stored on the phone even when u restore or it doesn't do it properly even if u retrieve it from the server that's if u had the settings for it to save on ur old phone.

Apparently they have stopped the service to anyone using Android 2.0 or 2.2 in order to give the best service they can. Could that be causing your problems?

From the WhatsApp blog
The following platforms will no longer be supported at the beginning of 2017:
Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
Windows Phone 7
iPhone 3GS/iOS 6

These platforms don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android running OS 2.3+, a Windows Phone 8+, or an iPhone running iOS 7+ before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.
