Failing that make it a slightly different shade of orangey-red

TBH I think 'rep' and 'thanks' are pretty much the same thing with different names, but as you say it doesn't matter whether a thankyou is from an established or a new member so why make the new members thanks stand-out (in a negative sort of way...)

I didn't know there was a difference??how do you leave negative rep??

starsparkle2311;5116687

you can't. All rep is good, you can only leave bad comments, which if you … you can't. All rep is good, you can only leave bad comments, which if you do will probably lead to an infraction if reported by the recipient:)

whats that mean then?(below) sorry

I'd just make the new member rep icon the same as the normal rep, or maybe a slightly paler orange circle...

it means all rep is the same, but if you leave a nasty comment, which I'm … it means all rep is the same, but if you leave a nasty comment, which I'm sure you won't, obviously the person who gets it won't like it and will report you.rep to me is a friendly thing, it really doesn't mean anything, you help someone, it's nice for them to show their thanks, that's all:thumbsup:

thanks.... have left you friendly orange circle rep! lol:-D

Good suggestion jah. Not sure why the different colours are there anyway.

About time! That's the only reason she explained it to you.

Is rep left by a new member

This is not true. It is rep left by someone with no rep.

Or little rep?

Or little rep?

Someone who hasn't been given any rep at all.

Or more concisely put, a new member...

[And to be fair, that is misleading too - all new members since 07 start with 10 rep points so have an orange circle, all who started before then started with 0 rep points and those who haven't earnt rep still to this day have the blue square]

So what is the relevance of it? And why not at very least have an icon that matches the style of the more-common orange rep and a less 'negative' or cold colour.

Not necessarily.... just someone with no rep yet.

Questions been asked again so bump - its a needless feature, looks messy and confusing and would literally take 10 seconds for a dev to fix:

whats the problem it just means you can see that its not an established member with rep who has repped you

pointless thread, just another excuse to whinge about something/nothing

The problem is it confuses people - they either don't understand what the rep means or mistake it for negative rep - then they post a thread asking the question. Its not a whinge, its a very simple and practical solution to a real problem that causes the same question to be repeatedly asked...

a simple search is all that is required and it hardly makes any difference if people are confused or not but i would say generally its out of curiosity ....

solution : people should use their brains a little more to solve this "real problem"

Disagree 100%, its a really weak answer to suggest people should search for solutions to problems and that will fix them. The 'neutral' icon looks silly, its inconsistent and its clear from the link you provide that dozens of people have felt the need to post a new thread - often as they concerned they have received a negative rep (blue is a colour representing 'cold' on this site after all).

It would take ten seconds to replace the icon - that is a solution - suggesting people 'search' is patronising, naive and very much a backwards step - especially given the poor results obtained from the on-site search.

ok mate if you think searching for answers to problems is weak...... nobody can help you!

how does it look silly it helps you distinguish that new members have repped you....excatly what it is adding to someones reputation like it says when you do it...... if there was a way to give negative rep then you may have a point as in people may get confused.... but there isnt

"dozens" is hardly realistic either..... and a simple search of blue rep in the search box does wonders

good luck but personally to me its handy to see new members repping me

Look on the link you provided, you will find 24 threads that I have found where the question has been asked - and there will be several more that I haven't found and tagged. That is dozens.

Why is there any need to distinguish that a new member has helped you? And as I say in the first post, surely a circle of a similar, warm colour would make more sense than the incongruous cold coloured square.

Yes a search for 'blue rep' does give useful results - partly thanks to the same members repeatedly answering the question in a uniform way, but what if the member sees it as a 'grey square' or similar - as many have in the past? The site has a notoriously crap, non-standard search which simply doesn't function as it should and until Paul pulls his finger out and purchases a google-box its going to remain that way - and until that day suggesting users can solve things by 'searching' will remain partronising and glib.

out of those 24 threads which have "apparently" asked the question, most are over 6 months old and spread over 2 years..... so even if it were to be asked once a month (which it is incidently not even close to) that would hardly constitute a "problem" with over 175,000 users.... dont know the percentage

its only "patronising" if a user has to be told to do something they already know to do.......which in this case most members are quite capable of working out for themselves as demonstrated in the very few threads that have actually asked that specific question and that are not just asking and talking about rep in general

There is no 'apparently' about it, I suggest you read the threads. There are 24 listed there, 5 from the last 3 months, 7 from the last 6 months, there will be others that I haven't listed, its clearly over once a month (how on earth do you get 'not even close to?'). For each person that starts a thread on the issue, I'd be confident that several other people have wondered the same thing (as is evident in many of those threads). Its a large enough 'problem' that several people have identified it as being a recurrent question...

i really think its a pretty easy thing for brain to work out, powers of deduction perhaps or are most peoples brains alive and a few peoples dead? you just have to look at the posts most people leave a message and maybe a name but the blue ones dont or just say thanks in my experience

brain is a powerful thing and to work something out like this takes zero brain cells or maybe 1 to use the search option( coz it does need at least a half)......without having to be patronisingly told

do i need to ask what category you are in?:whistling:

enjoy....ill keep an eye out for any change in the rep system

Original Poster

I'm in the category that realises that you are wrong in assuming that every will be able to deduce that it means a member with little rep and that searching will instantly reveal this. Like I say, read some of those threads - plenty of people assume it probably means negative rep (understandably), plenty of people reply giving the incorrect information. It clearly does cause confusion, but obviously not for someone as intelligent (smug?) as yourself, and after all why would you want to help out and improve things for anyone like that...

by making them use their brains is more help than changing the colour of a square lol....well working out how to search is a start even if you dont posess the powers of deduction brain skill..... maybe im just 1 of the fantastic four or something with a unique ability.....oh wait no there are still over 176,000 members who have it as well:w00t:
