It is very appropriate to leave a comment in the FS forums.

There's always a reason your editing, so why not say what it is?

There's nothing to stop you leaving a reason for editing if you need to, but there is no need to force 'Reasons for edit' to be filled in.

The problem is that if you have to make more than one edit, then you have to enter another reason. This happened both to Jumpingphil and myself today.

Would be better to offer a preview. But customer friendliness hasn't been the driving force with this new layout. The designer obviously never uses forums as a user. Typical desk job.

Just put a single space character for the Edit comment.

I hear what the op is saying, but I'd much rather have the functionality than not.

Respect to HUKd on this one, it give us the users more control.
If someone is stupid enough to abuse it, report them, simple.

You're missing the point. There was an option to leave a reason for editing a comment on the old version of the site but it wasn't mandatory. Now someone who designs websites as a hobby has decided that every edit to a comment must be accompanied by a written reason, no matter whether it is a genuine reason or a single character - complete waste of time.

At least you've got the chance to edit and have it time stamped now.
Shame that if you make a second edit, you lose the details of the first edit, again.
Was fixed once but has gone backwards since.

I wouldn't mind being given the OPTION to leave a reason, but in most cases it's simple spelling mistakes, in which case having to type a reason is just irritating.
I just end up puting '....' whenever it asks me for a reason, which pretty much makes the whole thing pointless.
So it's simple, leave the 'Reason' box there, but don't force us to give a reason.

If you can enter '....' or just a single space character then you are not forced to give a reason; you are just force to enter something.

I'm more bothered by the continued history of edits tagged onto the end of a comment. By all means force a reason to be entered but pre-populate the reason text with the previous reason & do not append to the previous reason(s); just replace the (updated) text instead.

As a workaround in certain circumstances, if your comment is the last in the thread, just delete it & replace it with the revised (corrected) comment text instead.

Not ideal either way you look at it but not worth fussing over. There are plenty of other issues with the re-designed site to get annoyed about (instead).

For instance, there is no prompt to confirm your intention when you (accidentally) click the [Delete this comment] link.

There is also no mandatory reason provided when you are deleting a comment; something that you were forced to do previously but now no longer have to provide. That must be more of an irritant for the Moderators trying to follow discussions, especially when a fight breaks out.
