Received my Chromebook today. DOA. Won't charge or turn on. (mad) Edit: Contacted both Argos E-Bay and their (3rd party) 'Tech Support'. Argos just want me to return and they'll refund (best option it seems). Their Tech Support offered a repair but frankly I've no faith in them given how (un)thorough they seem to have been with the machine I received. Pity, as it was in good nick otherwise. There was a vague offer of a "possible exchange if something roughly similar comes in" but they couldn't guarantee this or give me a timescale.

This was selling new for 99 about 2 years back at tesco. The sd card sticks out, cancelled my order

You can never please them all majorwedgy84. Love the dodgy nickname BTW.

Well given the number of people that winge about multiple posts, hard to please all

Cool, would have been better if they had posted 2 separate deals to avoid confusion.

I’d imagine you could build a great desktop based around a Ryzen 2700/x with a b450 and 16gb ram for around £600. Might even be able to get a 1660 or rx590 in that as well if you can reclaim the psu from your old machine.

I'm considering the budget version of this. Need a replacement for a Desktop and have a limited budget.

Hmm if this olny could be 17.3

Hmm, 35% faster CPU or 1660Ti which blows the 1060 out of the water. I would rather go for this.

I'm not suggesting things have not improved significantly. I'm just pleasantly surprised that older tech still seems to be able to provide acceptable performance, well past the expected lifespan. As you mention, the pricing isn't good right now. Perhaps due to the change in the market towards smaller mobile devices and less economy of scale in the PC market?

It's mostly for FPS shooters where it gives you an edge having faster refresh rates, so basically most eSports titles. Your Pentium 90 game wasn't online or needing critically fast response times I bet.

They probably don't. It seems to be the 'in thing' now and getting as high a fps as possible at lower settings. The screen gets good reviews on this model which was what caught my attention and along with the 1050Ti. This laptop is still priced at £949 at PC World/Currys.

Why would anyone 'need' (or even notice) more than 60fps to play a game unless you were pro gaming? I remember happily playing racing games on my pentium 90 at 20-25fps, it wasn't 'unplayable' or anything. Pretty good deal though as the 1050 ti seems to be able to play most current stuff on decent settings with decent frame rates.

Ours arrived today. In original box though the box was not mint, it's pretty good though. Laptop has no marks and looks pristine. No manuals just charging cable. Booted the laptop and it had a 16gb e drive, they've not installed the optane drivers. Downloaded them from Intel and it's much snappier now. Overall, excellent value.

I'm tempted by this as it seems a decent mod range gaming laptop. The comment above me is right though. There's no way it was in a cabinet. I wonder if it's worth just dropping an extra 200 and getting it new.

When was the last time you saw a laptop on display, in a cabinet???

Depends on the school - if your kids school uses Google Apps (G Suite for Education) then this could be a good buy. Highlights being minimum virus and slowdown hassle, you can just powerwash it (in the settings) if it's being funny. If they use Office 365 then a Windows laptop might be better. If you do decide to go for any Chromebook you should consider the support life as Google will stop pushing updates after that date. Some refurbs look like good deals but then you notice they only have a few years of updates left.

Totally agree Sam. The extra £, over the 431 is worth every penny for the extras it brings. Linux apps are getting better with every OS release and now support audio out. Just looking forward to the day when the GPU is also supported.

Touch screen makes most of difference as Android play store apps work correctly. Also this laptop has usb c not present in cb3 431. Also better cpu and integrated graphics. I used to hate chromebook before but now love them as all Android and many Linux apps started working.

Interesting ... "to run a programme that allows me to change the settings on my car." "I use a virtual machine as the programme I use had an expiry date of 2017, the the vm allows me to run the programme in an environment that emulates the past. " I'm curious, you wouldn't happen to running a very robust 'virtual version' of The Back To The Future DeLorean by any chance?, or ... hehehehehehehehe. Ahhhhhhhhh well, lol. You wouldnt happen to have a spare copy of a Window's 7 Pro product key by any chance?, thanx. As I wouldn't mind also trying my hand at virtualizing a copy of Window's 7 Pro ... Then via it, installing some old skool DOS Games from back in the Day (via one of those old skool archive web site's, etc?), for the pure nostalgic effect of it all. :-D (As it's been a wee while now, since I've gotten my hands dirrrrrrrrty, etc, lol). Ps. What sort of Window's software can anyone install that then ensures that you're able to then control your car,nor whatever? - I don't see it figuratively, or literally (though I'm more than happy to be proved wrong. :-)

Hi, yes I use a virtual version of windows 7 to run a programme that allows me to change the settings on my car. I use a virtual machine as the programme I use had an expiry date of 2017, the the vm allows me to run the programme in an environment that emulates the past. :)

Ahhhhhhhhh yes, I do recall hearing of some of those HP laptop model's some Year's back now, I believe I may have even heard of one or two of them being referred to touchscreen perhaps even?. But I had some mad issue's (as in in an unfortunate continuous fashion) with HP laptop's in the past (as in 5-6+ Year's, which then threw me off of any HP Laptop from that point moving forward ... (so I 'zoned out', basically, lol). That aside, I've since learnt off of HUKD is this, HP has tended to put better quality part's into their business laptop's (eg. Elite Book's, and Pro Book's - I believe they also have 1 other?, but I forget the name now?, lol), then they've tended to put into their consumer laptop's, etc. Which ofcourse is most unfortunate, as I've grown up with HP printers, so I'd obviously grown up already trusting a well known brand, but yet ... And even their printers aside, it's not like HP sell their business laptop's in an 'off the shelf' fashion either is it? (unfortunately), so we're pretty much stuffed. :-( And any business laptop's of theirs sold in a commercial fashion, via outlets like SPV, Morgan Computing (and suchlike), will ofcourse be used/second hand/refurbished, etc - where via it's usage scenario's, the 'end product' may/may not now be at 100%? (no one can ofcourse ever tell for sure). Though admittedly, I've heard good stories of those HP business laptop's nonetheless. :-D Long story short, I've tended to veer my hand towards Lenovo and Acer laptop's since then, etc. Either way, thanx for that, it was very informative indeed. Ahhhhhhhhh, interesting, I guess I've subconsciously seen that in action (without ofcourse paying it a blind bit of difference at the time, lol), eg. Window's 10 'appears' to load up milliseconds, instead of seconds to minutes, or whatever?. Stuff's of which should have been a bit more obvious (at the time), now to think about it? - considering my other Window's 10 laptop's (without either SSD or that Optane stuff in it), never loaded up as fast - though admittedly, the other one's never exactly took an age to load up either, lol (well, no laptop does initially I guess? - until ofcourse you then further dump on it pure crap!, hehehehe). :-D I haven't as yet gone down that 'route' as yet though (so I'm ofcourse, between myself and the laptop, we're still both 'learning' from each other as we go along, etc?, lol). Thanx, that too was very informative also. ********** Ps. @splender , your Virtualization stuff's sound's interesting though, I'm guessing it's not just about OS installation only right? - you also install other App's within it too, eg. a game, an office application or two, etc etc?, or ... :-)

Thanks, ordered for my son off to uni :)

Yes. The Swift 3 comes with 3 years warranty. Oh, and it is the Swift 3 that is the better colour. I'm not a massive fan of the gold but can deal with it! Reviews by consumers always a little questionable because I suspect most are as ignorant about computers as myself!

Also, comes with 4 years warranty. Don't forget this has been discounted from £800, and it won an award or something. :) You can check out some reviews at Amazon.

I'm wondering what people think of these two laptops compared. Normally I'd go straight for the Swift 3, however, the discount on the Swift 5 makes their prices very similar. Unfortunately they both have glossy screens when matte would be my preference but you can't have everything. Acer Swift 3 - £549.99….ds Acer Swift 5 - £599.99…382 Swift 3 gives you £50 Better battery Lack of touchscreen (I'm really not bothered about one on a clamshell) An extra USB 2.0 port Possibly a bit more sturdy? Better colour (not a major deal) Swift 5 gives you Under 1kg as opposed to 1.4kg Better display

Thank you - sound advice. That's what my dad would have said! Too much blooming choice.

My advice is to not expect for any electronic device to last this long. Also, by the time your son goes to uni, this technology will be well past its time and he will surely be looking to upgrade. Expecting 2-3 years is reasonable, expecting 5-6 years of use is optimistic. Second part of the advice - buy him something half the price now as I can't imagine a 11 year old needing more than being able to play Fortnite and for that you can get a laptop for £300 easily. It won't have a touchscreen but does he really really need it? When he gets older you will have more of an idea of what his needs are and you can get him something more expensive.

So I went ahead and brought this. So far quite impressed, it's thin and very light, so light you wonder if it's made of plastic! Obviously not though as you can feel it a type of metal alloy. Screen is plenty bright enough and whilst may not use it much a touchscreen is useful to have. Only downside with that is it's a reflective screen. The biggest benefit for me I've noticed so far is the fan noise or lack of it. Apart from when doing updates the fan is completely silent, very good if used in a quiet room. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase.

This ACER touchscreen Laptop is only 970g, why so light like that man?. That's more like Tablet sort of weight that ... :-D An almost significantly pointless weight, for a significant product, interesting?, lol. I believe it's incredibly light weight factor kinda played a massive factor in it's keyboard woes, perhaps?. (Just a thought ... )

A good point but that comparison is actually to the whiskey lake i5 chip which is newer than the Kaby lake line which is in this one. That might explain why there isn’t much difference between the newer i5 and the older i7. The other swift 5’s including the one in curry’s all seem to contain the Kaby lake i5 which is less powerful than its i7 brother.

I think it's quite lovely.XOXO

Just like others have said, not 1080p. Everything else is "Look, my new phone has 4k/ Quad HD/ 8k and Eastenders on my 6 inch screen looks amazing! I also need a new laptop, so reading pages of text on a 15.6 inch screen with 768 pixels will be fine" Is it just us who INSIST in Hull HD? I would understand it in a budget laptop, but do you really need to spend £600 on an identical spec laptop JUST for the screen upgrade?

I have a SSD in my work laptop and a HDD in my 5 yrs old personal laptop. There is no way I will buy a new one now without a SSD.

Not with a 1TB mechanical drive... It's 2019, that will be s very frustrating experience even with an 8th gen i5.
