Great! I’m going to get one.

Terms say they send you the dot after four weeks of the policy being active. So cancel after the first month.

If you need home insurance have a look at top cashback. I just renewed mine and with one of the top insurance company’s paid only £85 for building and unlimited new for old and accidental damage. That was after I get the £85 cash back. So it was £170 all in for building and contents then I got £85 back so only paid £85. Can buy a couple of these Echo Dots if I wanted one.

shortchanged

no but the thief can leave a message or start a radio station to calm you down

Will this ring the police and file an insurance claim for you if thiefs break in?

I searched for this deal, didn't find it, posted it and then it got marked as 'spam' as it's a duplicate... Tag your deals properly folks or people can't find them! Don't understand the cold votes myself - great product on offer for a fraction of the price of a Google Home.

I bought this when the black was in stock a week or so ago. All working well. The companion remote is miles better than the awful Harmony Touch I was using. Plus no touchscreen means it only uses one of those button batteries so no constant recharging.

Jimmyboy

Seems odd how cold this has gone yet it's currently the best price for both items together?! I'm tempted, this deal has expired but is still available if you don't mind the white version of the Dot.

I thought the h I thought the whole point of having the hub was so that all the voice controls worked natively ? https://support.myharmony.com/en-us/harmony-experience-with-amazon-alexa I really want this, but only if it works like that, eg 'Alexa watch tv', 'Alexa turn the sound up' (on the tv), 'alexa turn to BBC1'. If all it can do is turn on/off the tv then it's not worth it IMO.

A San Diego TV station sparked complaints this week – after an on-air report about a girl who ordered a dollhouse via her parents' Amazon Echo caused Echoes in viewers' homes to also attempt to order dollhouses. Telly station CW-6 said the blunder happened during a Thursday morning news package about a Texan six-year-old who racked up big charges while talking to an Echo gadget in her home. According to her parents' Amazon account, their daughter said: "Can you play dollhouse with me and get me a dollhouse?" Next thing they knew, a $160 KidKraft Sparkle Mansion dollhouse and four pounds of sugar cookies arrived on their doorstep. During that story's segment, a CW-6 news presenter remarked: "I love the little girl, saying 'Alexa ordered me a dollhouse'." That, apparently, was enough to set off Alexa-powered Echo boxes around San Diego on their own shopping sprees. The California station admitted plenty of viewers complained that the TV broadcast caused their voice-controlled personal assistants to try to place orders for dollhouses on Amazon. We'll take this opportunity to point out that voice-command purchasing is enabled by default on Alexa devices. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/01/07/tv_anchor_says_alexa_buy_me_a_dollhouse_and_she_does/

jordanbutters

Download an app called Yonomi for your phone. Add Harmony routines/processes via the app and then you can just say 'Alexa turn on XXX'.

marra

Heat added and bought.

rbramhill1

I have tried this. It is a pain to set up and still some things it will not do. eg. turn on the PS4. Voice control is also a pain, Alexa ask Harmony to turn the TV on. long winded. I just want Alexa to do it, not ask someone else to do it for her. Considering a return. Am I missing something that would make things easier?

Argos are still running the promo offering £15 off but they’ve worded it in such a way that the staff have to give you the extra £10 off. So you get two for £75 - just go to a manned checkout and explain it’s only given 5 off and a manager will run it through at 75 for both. Deal was posted here but got chilly because people don’t understand. I did it though and have receipt if anyone is interested

I used to find that but recnetly they have become a lot better on pricing. Example, had a £50 off £100 code, so bought PlayStation plus 365, a ps4 v2 controller and some other bits for £50 overall. Mecoconuts

Found this on another site which might give the Dot another use...... "If you're like me and all you're trying to do is call your kids from the living room and tell them to come down from their room, I have a pretty cool workaround. First use your phone or laptop to create a sound message. "Kids, Come down to eat" save as "kidscomedown.mp3" file. Use Amazon Music app on PC to upload it in your library like you would any other song you want in your library. In the Alexa App, go to menu, Music and Books, Use the drop down to find your kids room Echo. Go to My Music Library. Go to Songs, Find the file you created "kidscomedown.mp3" and press play. It will then play on the kid's echo. This works for songs and even works remotely from anywhere in the world, doesn't have to be in your house. I use it from my work. I have one that says "don't forget to clean your room" or "put away dishes in the dishwasher", etc."

Don't you just love when people get their knickers twisted simply because they don't like something (or willing to pay for it) - there is no need to spoil the thread for everyone else! This is simply as bad as the buy new or lease the car debate we have had a number of times in the past.

a4refillpad

This deal should only be rated cold if other can find a better deal. For people wanting to buy a dot, this is the best deal around. Voting hot for people who want it.

accomplish

I bought one Echo Dot, after reading lots of reviews and knowing that it is clever yet limited technology. I must say I love it for such a cheap price for its computing power. It was great after I had a recent operation, when it hurt to move in any direction, even to pick up a phone. I could do with two Dots. I currently move mine between the bedroom where it is used mainly for lights, radio, music and audio books, and the kitchen where it is used as a timer, radio, newspaper headlines, lame jokes and to learn general knowledge without having to use a phone with wet or greasy hands. They remind me of the early days of home computers: exciting technology that still needs to reach its full powerful potential. I also thought how great it would have been when various past relatives who were in the last stages of their life, confined to living downstairs. They could have felt more in control e.g. switching on lights upstairs if they heard a strange noise at night, listening to audible book, checking the time at night without looking for their glasses, and changing the temperature if they became too hot or cold, etc. As humans we are usually better off as creators and producers rather than mere consumers. Anything which reduces human physical movement is also detrimental to health. Nevertheless, this is interesting background consumer technology

I was going to buy this when it was £99 but I think my wife would have got jealous and she would start to hit me

This was also my experience. The bluetooth speaker falling asleep after inactivity meant I had to manually switch it back on again each time which kind of seems to defeat the purpose of this tech for me.
