It saves you having to buy a zigbee, Philips hue, Samsung smart thing seperate hubs, so if you bought a Philips hue bulbs it will work, any Samsung smart devices it will work etc
Yeah that's what I feel is confusing at the mo. It shouldn't matter what the hub is, it should just be able to interact with anything. Most ppl (like me!) Don't care about ZigBee, zwave etc - they just want to plug and play

You are correct on both counts. The Echo Plus 2nd gen is the most recent 'Plus' device. I also think the non 'plus' version is missing a thermometer.
You'll find more 'Smart' products will interact with the Amazon Alexa devices over Google at the moment. We are due some type of 'smart' standard over the next year or so but as a user of both, I find Amazon more compatible.
