What I’m looking for is a credit card that has a decent 20 month plus on 0% spending but with also cashback like £25 , because it’s rare to get both , you usually only get 1 or the other .

aventador1

Providing you know how to use them credit cards are fine. Personally I’ve used them to improve credit rating, credit card protection etc never had an issue and always pay it off in full. It’s the people who spend spend spend without any thinking that need to stop using credit cards.

joesmith1992

Seriously? Did you actually read our posts? Using something wisely requires wisdom. Using something intelligently requires intelligence. Those who understand interest earn it, those that don't pay it. The way I've suggested to use this does not involve getting into actual debt - simply holding more funds in savings account(s) that you could use to pay off the credit card in an instant. Literally will have no negative impact should you become redundant or can no longer work - in fact it would put you in a better position as it would give you access to more funds should you need it, plus the extra interest you'd earn. Sure, if you just want to get this because you decided you need to have the latest iPhone that you can't afford, then this is a bad idea, as I stated (no self control or lack any understanding of money - totally fair and just, I'm not saying it in a nasty way, just saying it how it is). There may be a case that you find yourself in a difficult situation and need credit to feed your family - it happens. This is a reasonable way to do it, so long as - like I said - you understand money and pay it back. But of course - all credit cards are evil, should never be used by anyone and should be banned forever.

gwapenut

Re: The deal itself, it's worth noting that Barclaycard and Sainsburys have 2% or 2.5% minimum repayments, which actually becomes quite singificant over the lifetime of these deals versus the 1% you get with some other lenders. If it's fee free then it's not such a worry, but if you're paying 1-3% handling fee you want to have more than half of the balance still remaining at the end of the term if you're looking at this as a stooze. Of course, if it's just to manage short-term cashflow problems, then a higher minimum repayment may suit you.

gwapenut

I also think phrases like "Save up for the things you want. Cold" are quite condescending too, which is what lea to my reply. Maybe consider others' circumstances before posting.. Not everyone's circumstances allow for that either,, life can throw horrible unforeseeable curveballs to us or to our nearest and dearest. Or some people may have saved up and wish to offset their savings. Your post itself is implying that HUKD members are not able to use it other than as a ticket to debt. I get tired of the CC haters tarring every deal with the same brush - often it's a blanket response from people who don't understand how they can be judiciously used to their advantage, which is what prompted my own response.

Depends on your spend.. my card renews in January or February and I’m at £370 cashback so far this year and got £430 last year. We put all our spending on it that we can, down to 50p for a pint of milk from Waitrose, then pay off in full each month.

snoopy18

Yes that’s true.

gwapenut

It can be converted to hard cash in costco if you like - you don't need to spend it there. You just need to visit customer services to cash it in.

snoopy18

I mean for spending in general, then voucher is used at Costco

gwapenut

Not really, if you're aready a costco member. After 3 months that card doesn't give 2% on travel or 3% on restaurants/pubs. After 3 months, this card is at least as good as the platinum card, and it also has no annual fee

not on our preferred rewards gold card (same as OP) we've not had any good offers for about a year. also yet to know what to spend hte points on... might be time to cancel!

I received an email about this offer on 31/05 so bought a petrol on 02/06 but the offer dissapeared. Contacted them buy they said the offer expired :(

Ab001

I had the same thing last year and again called Amex and they gave me the £5 credit. The petrol station looked exactly like a standard Esso so bit annoying. Not on my Amex Platinum reward card today though

charlespcl

Cheers. I would probably need to find another Tesco with an Esso then!

Super74

Yes ,I just bought the gift cards without any fuel purchase. About 2-3 years ago the same thing happened to me as well, when I bought fuel and gift cards from a Tesco attached to an Esso, the receipt said Tesco and I didn’t receive the credits. But after calling Amex ,they added them to my account with no problems.

Actually a pretty good deal! Just ordered two bottles of whisky priced at £55 online (£46 elsewhere) plus 5.95 delivery. After the discount, it went to £99 + delivery = 104.95. The Amex discount will take it down to £74.95 for two lovely bottles. I also used Avios.com to get 10 avios per pound. That will go through on the 104.95, so 1040 avios as well!

For women, probably skincare, perfurmes. Check out the Charlotte Tilbury products, they have amazing reputation. For Men, polo shirts can be a good idea.

Amazing offer! Just bought £100 of perfume for presents with 10% off plus £30 cashback, plus 1000 Avios (10 per pound via avios store). An effective 35% discount. Just inverse snobbery if you avoid Harrods with a discount like that!

Is there a difference between the Premium Plus and the basic card? I don't see this offer on my account. Sadly most of these deals seem to be unique to certain people, but thanks for posting anyway.

In my experience, the gold card gets the most offers, followed by BA Amex and then the free basic membership reward credit card. Sometimes the offers are the same, but sometimes different.

3-4k should be fine but if you decide to make the purchase as soon as you get the card I’d give them a call first so they don’t think it’s fraud and decline it. I’ve done it few times before buying things like rail season ticket.

ihaveaquestion

I'm very tempted to buy the Amex Rewards Gold Card as I have a big purchase to make (between 3-4k) so getting a couple of hundred back would be ideal. However, I assume there's a credit limit on this card, so would it perhaps not be possible for me to use it for such a large purchase?

Yes, but its still something to take into account.

My son's Xbox is playing up at the moment where it doesnt sense a working monitor over HDMI and so switches on but shows no picture unless I cold boot the entire thing; and even then it doesn't always work. Hi. Fair challenge, but horses for courses, no? If you are able and prepared to drop £3k on a credit card and then bank 25k avios for a future flight, do so. If you simply want £50 off a £200 flight *right now* take the offer, pay the first statement and then cancel it. Or do both!

yehehehes

oops , yeah I did mean the cashback card (didn't realise they introduced a fee on this one) not the £450 one. The Gold probably offers the most versatility for redeeming through the MR programme (could get 20k Avios if the rate is still 1:1).

ma6jrp

Platinum charge card has a £450 fee, but is refunded pro rata. Platinum cashback is £25 or free depending on the version. SPG also worth a look.

yehehehes

From the OPs post it appears you can get this on the classic card. You can't get a 25k Avios bonus on this classic card. You're talking about the premium card which carries a hefty annual fee. Also, some might prefer instant cash over Avios. If you are looking for a high bonus card then their Gold, Platinum (both charge not credit cards) and Nectar credit cards are worth considering. None carry a fee in the first year.
