this thing is awesome, got the 8gb ram version off Gearbest for £165.
Then opened it up and installed this 256GB m2 drive (22*42mm) - there's a spare slot which they don't seem to advertise clearly.

For a tiny little box running windows pro, it flies.
Edited by: "rapid111111" 4th Feb
Noticed it claims only HDMI 1.4B.

What is the difference between HDMI 1.4 and 2.0?
HDMI 2.0 vs 1.4: 4K video at 50p and 60p. HDMI 1.4 introduced the kind of bandwidth required to deliver 4K video, but HDMI 2.0 can dole out 4K video without compromise, at 50 and 60 frames per second. In HDMI 1.4, the rate of 4K was limited to 24 frames per second.

Not sure if it's any significance to anyone that have HDMI 2.0 displays.
I've been looking at this Win 10 box, slightly cheaper and stock from Germany,so should be quickish delivery, and of course no import taxes unlike the risk from China/HK

Notable that the Intel N3450 is a quad core chip

Are there any different ( specifically better) choices out of interest ?
All I could see was Minix unit but over £100 more expensive and not a lot in improvement in spec I could see, would be interesting to compare other options.....
I think the cheaper Z8350 is also quad ?,but runs at 1.83Mhz whilst the first link is reportedly faster at 2.5Mhz ( might be 2.2Mhz not sure if this is a misprint)

Some of the review suggest slowness on the cheaper units to be unusable ( but didn't explain what they were using for)
so I was just factoring in an extra £40 or so isn't that great over the long term ownership of the device, although I may only use it mainly for some streaming or entertainment apps like iplayer, netflix, etc.

Got a firestick but for downstairs want something with a bit more "poke" as its pretty slugish, its ok for the wife upstairs.
Looking for ideas for a Plex server. Got a Nvidia shield which has two spare USB slots. Got a 7 year old proliant server or my main PC which is on most days tbh. So either use my main PC and attach more drives. Attempt to use the proliant server or buy something else. I have two spare sata hard drive to use. One is 2tb one is 1tb. Would be playing 90% of the stuff on the Nvidia shield. All 4k. But I would get 1080p stuff for other devices running Windows. Guessing that rules out the proliant as the files would have to be changed to run on Windows? Transcoding I think?

I bought a phone advertised on HotUKDeals for Geekbuying. Here's my experience- I havent even said anything about DHL charging me £25 tax before delivery can be made.

What I have emailed Paypal:

I am totally unhappy with the way I have been treated. Geekbuying sold me a totally faulty phone 2 months ago - that I haven't used - it gives me 2 bars - I live 200M from a signal mast. I get no signal after 300M from the signal mast. I cannot use the phone on any travel.
I have now bought myself a new phone - use the same SIM car from the same network and I get full 4G. I can use the phone wherever I travel.
I have been asked by Geekbuying to "send videos" and "photos". For less than £100 - they want me to jump thorugh hoops and waste even more of my time - it's been 2 months.
WHEN THEY DO REPLY, THEY REPLY 1 WEEK TO 10 DAYS LATER!!!
After sending them the video, they have said that there is no problem - as the phone made a phone call - they have ignored that it only shows 2 bars of phone coverage. I AM NOT GOING TO GO AROUND THE COUNTRY VIDEOING THE PHONES FAILURES AND COMPARING THEM. THIS IS NOT MY JOB - IT IS THE PHONES FAULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WANT MY MONEY BACK, MY ACCOUNT CLOSED AND ALL MY DETAILS DELETED BY GEEKBUYING!!!!

My undergraduate degree is in Psychology, and yes, it is one of the less …My undergraduate degree is in Psychology, and yes, it is one of the less demanding subjects when it comes to IT requirements at undergraduate level. On the other hand, SPSS may run on fairly low specs, but it is woefully optimised, meaning that once you have any reasonably sized dataset running an analysis, it can challenge lower spec machines. These days, most psychology undergraduates will have that open with e-prime, perhaps citation software like mendeley and so on. The main thing to consider will be the CPU/RAM/Storage. If you go with an i5/SSD combination, you can get by on 4GB RAM quite easily, but 8GB would be better for a primary machine. The integrated graphics on any modern core CPU will be more than good enough.BUTThe one thing you'll want is a good display which means FHD minimum and of good quality. This is overlooked time and again, despite being the main thing you look at when you're working. A good keyboard is also incredibly important, given that psychology involves a LOT of essay and report writing. My mobile computing solution is the 2017 SP i5/128GB/4GB and it can run with NVivo, SPSS, Mendeley, Word, OneNote all open and in use without a hiccup.Hope your daughter enjoys Psych BTW.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply, I realise I sent slightly off topic but you still replied with good, indepth, well explained advice. Thank you.
A biut iffy buying outside of the UK, for me anyway. I'd want to put Ubuntu on one of these.
Great price - went for the 3 pro model to get the IPS screen - slightly more and a smaller screen but it should be worth it (hoping I get the v4 model that solves the power lock bios and touchpad issues)

I had one these last year and sent it back because it suffered a lot of overheating when used with an additional hard drive inside, even then the fan cut in, which is does a lot and is very loud, requiring a hardware mod to fix, so build quality is not what it should be.

Gemini Lake boxes with native HDMI 2 support are imminent too, so expect a slew of Apollo Lake boxes to get reduced in price.

What a master plan, overall sales are dropping and we are laying thousands of workers off.
Soloution Restrict sales of popular items to one per household that should do the trick (lol).
Most resellers will have already stocked up on this and are probably applauding Lego for restricting it to everyone else.

I don't suppose this bike would be suitable for a 4.5 yr old at all (anyone that already has one, what age did it do up to)? I've been on the look out for a balance bike but most of the standard ones are too small, and the bikes specifically designed for older children (eg 4+) are way above my price range.
DirtyPixel31st Aug

That's a very ignorant comment. I've worked in the cycle industry for over …That's a very ignorant comment. I've worked in the cycle industry for over 10 years and balance bikes are an infinitely better option than stabilisers to ease young children onto pedal bikes. Think about it. You teach a child on stabilisers, then when you take them off they have to learn how to balance AND pedal. Far better to get them whizzing around on one of these and learning balance intuitively without having to concentrate on anything else. Put them onto a pedal bike after learning on a balance bike and you'll be amazed how quickly they pick it up. I've seen it with both customers and most recently with my 4 year old daughter. Even I was surprised how quickly she took to the pedals - all because she had her balance sorted. As already mentioned too, these bikes are way lighter than your average kids bike - heavy bikes being an instant fun killer for young legs. Stupid is as stupid does.

Couldn't agree more, well said!

Seen loads of posts that a balance bike is alot easier for a child to …Seen loads of posts that a balance bike is alot easier for a child to learn than stabilisers

I agree with the balance bike theory.

I just mean why would you not just take the pedals off a normal bike, and when the child has sorted their balance out, put them back on and u have a propper bike !

Saves having to buy two bikes.

The argument against stabilisers (the child has to re-adapt to not having them) is the same for lightweight vs normal weight.

The child has to re-adapt again for a normal weighted bike once the light balance one has been put away.

Thats just my opinion. Each to their own. I still think its a false economy buying a balance bike.

I will be buying a normal bike and taking the pedals off until balance has been mastered.
Edited by: "s4k1b85" 2nd Sep 2017
GOOD Balance bikes are brilliant for teaching kids balance to get them ready to learn how to ride. Most small children can pedal a trike easily, only kids with balance bikes learn how to balance!

Wooden bikes look cool, and grand parents seem to love buying them - and I my opinion thats where their benefits end. (I guess one other plus for this HUK OP is it is very cheap as a disposable toy). The wooden bikes I've seen kids strugling with are very heavy and have greatly restricted turning circles.

If you want a child to learn to ride early on I STRONGLY recomend getting a strider striderbike.co.uk/
Super light weight, No brakes to get confused with, no stearing/turning restrictions (the same as a real bike)

My daughter when she was about 2 loved zooming down the hills on the way back from nursery every day and learn't to ride her first pedal bike at about 3.5 years old with about 3 hours practice.

There are cheap alternatives to strider - make sure you get something as light as possible though. Most kids bikes weigh more than anything a serious adult cyclist would cosider riding and yet people think it's reasonable to expect kids to manage!

<Sorry for massive post - I care about this a lot - and I don't work for Stider :P but they are very helpful on phone calls>

I wouldn't be too concerned, really.

I've had this ratchet for around 10 years, no idea where I got it, somehow ended up in my tool chest at work.

The one I have is black and grey but otherwise identical.

Mechanism is much smoother than my Halfords, Britool and Teng 1/4 drives, probably on par with my Facom fine tooth.

Can't speak for the sockets, but the ratchet is actually really good.
Bahco one is a mini version. Sockets only go up to 13mm.

I'm holding out for the 20% plus the extra 10%
