• watchOS 8

  Apple Watch 7 comes with watchOS 8 pre-loaded. This has a better Photos app with enhanced sharing and a range of upgrades to the Smart Home functions. There is also a fresh Mindfulness app, which has taken over Breathe. In the Workout area, you can explore Pilates and Tai Chi, or track your breathing and heart rate when you’re asleep. If you tend to use Wallet on your Apple watch, this too has been redesigned to include Ultra Wideband support. This means it can work as a digital key for the car, home, office and even hotel rooms.

• Design

  Thinner bezels than previous Apple watches mean the 7 has a 20% larger screen. The corners are softly rounded to feel more comfortable against the wrist and the casing base is flat. The watch is also more robust than previous models with crack-resistant glass and an IP6X rating for dust resistance. In terms of water resistance, the WR50 rating remains, so it will manage well in up to 50m of water.

• Display

  The Watch 7 OLED panel includes an integrated touch sensor and the entire face has a wraparound effect to make it blend in with the casing. If you enjoy changing up the look of your smartwatch you can play with two additional faces created just for this device - Modular Duo and Condor. Despite its size, Apple has managed to fit an entire QWERTY keyboard onto the Watch 7. You can type on it as you would a phone screen or tap form words and drag them into your text using QuickPath. If you place the watch in Always-On mode the screen will be up to 70% brighter when you’re viewing it indoors.

• Connectivity

  You can choose between a cellular model and the GPS version which is the cheapest Apple Watch 7. The cellular versions have a SIM card inside and allow you to be independent of your phone. This type of Watch 7 will make or receive calls and texts, as well as downloading songs. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to leave their phone at home during a workout, but still make calls or check emails when there is no Wi-Fi. The GPS version can also use Wi-Fi to make calls, send messages and enable Siri.

• Storage

  You’ll get 32GB of storage on every Apple Watch 7 model. This should give you plenty of space for photos, apps, songs and emails.

• Battery life

  You can expect around 18 hours of battery life from a single charge, although this will depend on how you are using the watch. Powering up the watch is faster thanks to the 33% more effective USB-C cord which you can use for magnetic charging. In 45 minutes, you can go from having a completely flat battery to 80% charged and ready for action. If you just want the phone to track your stats while you sleep, an 8-minute charge will keep it going for eight hours.

• Health and fitness suite

  This area of the Apple Watch 7 deals with tracking your oxygen levels, heart rate and the time you’ve spent sleeping. It will also measure your respiratory rate, which is the number of times you take a breath each minute. This data is then collated and presented in the watch’s Health app, so you can use it to measure your wellness and fitness over time. In the Mindfulness app, there are meditation sessions to help you relax, along with tips and animations to create a calming atmosphere.

• Workout Voice Feedback

  Apple has included a few upgrades for their Voice Feedback feature that are available for you to use whilst working out. One new setting allows Siri to provide fitness progress news, this could be reaching a halfway point in your run, beating a personal best or reaching a goal you set yourself.

• Photos

  There are two different photo watch faces. Both read the Portrait images on your iPhone to produce an artistic display. Using Memories and Featured Photos you can see new photos every day or view them on a grid. If you spot a shot you like, just tap to select and it will be shown in full on the Watch 7 face. To share a photo with family or friends you can send it through your Mail or Message app.
