I had this for use with my phone a while back. It was great but as someone said, a faff with it hanging out your phone. Ended up selling it and getting an HTC 10 as it's got a decent dac and amp built in. If your primary use is mobile I'd consider a phone upgrade instead.

Good price though

Do you use it with your phone? If so how does it impact battery life?

Just a lot of the reviews on amazon suggest it's being used with a desktop.

Otherwise this looks perfect! Cheers.

Jiwani80

What is this?

The short answer is that it's a small USB device that circumvents the audio components inside your computer and instead runs the audio through its superior components, resulting is improved sound quality if you have headphones/speakers capable of articulating it. As a general most standard consumer headphones won't yield a tangible benefit, but for owners of high end headphones (or headphones that benefit from a higher power amplifier) then this is a very nice compact unit.

The 607 was notorious for its HDMI board problem, have you had yours fixed or been lucky?

Funnily enough. Mine failed after 5 years. Intermittent loss first for a few months then total.
Richer sounds in brum were a waste of space. Spoke to the head office customer services. They collected it, replaced the faulty board and sent it back all FOC despite it being 5 years and 10 months old.
Can't argue with that!

Plex can do it natively and takes less than 5 minutes to set up. If you are using the optical output sound quality will be identical since it bypasses the DAC.

Not a great deal of faffing about. CCA works great as part of a Squeezebox ecosystem. All you need is a plugin for the server.
You can use apps like localcast to play from any UPNP/DLNA server. Plus you can use Spotify and the likes for streaming.
SQ-wise, I can't tell the difference comparing to Sqeezebox receiver hooked up to CA DacMagic over optical. It's not outstanding, but certainly decent enough. And amazing value for money. I'm yet to try my 96/24 Pink Floyd records. That might be more revealing.
I doubt this NAD is audiophile-grade either. Plus proprietary networking standard is not something I'd like to be buying into. Not sure how much additional receivers cost. But if they are USB, only that's fairly limiting.
Another downside is USB audio. This is bound to have some limitations compared to toslink.
Voted hot, as it certainly is a good product for those who are unwilling to tinker with things like Squeezebox.

The device's output impedance is 10 ohms according to spec so technically should work best with 80+ohm headphones (but may be quite satisfactory with very low impedance buds).
I've seen one reviewer suggest it works OK with (pretty insensitive) AKG K701 and another say nay (praising performance boost with Geek Out 1000). My reading into that is that very few folks (maybe those with more money than sense) are likely to get caught out by this being underpowered.

Really? You don't rate external DACs at all? Or just this one

I just don't think there is anything wrong with onboard DACs on most devices, there is so much dishonesty in the audio and video world (What HiFis HDMI cable reviews for example) and in my opinion, USB DACs are an example of this. I have sort of been conned recently by buying a £50 Soundblaster Z for my PC, I cannot tell a difference outside of the improved equaliser settings.

Surely the £50 is better spent on amp/speakers/headphones?

I have some; and although they are not exremely loud, the sound clarity is really pretty excellent. It was 1000% improvement on my Acer laptop speakers, and £20.00 well spent- bonus that they look very sleek also....
I was using Lacie USB speakers before, gave them to a friend, as these are both louder and sound much better... great product!
I got something similar for my Mum's PC and was amazed how clear they were. Obviously lacking in bass, so not much good for gamers (unless you have a sub or something to add some oomph) but for my Mum's use, which is mostly just watching youtube clips and stuff like that, they were ideal, so if that's the sort of thing you need speakers for, don't write these off.

I haven't tried these particular speakers though, so can't vouch for them. This is what I got my Mum amazon.co.uk/gp/…s00 and they're a bit more versatile, as whilst they're still USB powered, they have a 3.5mm input for the audio.

Has it got its own volume controls?

Hadn't thought of this but I suppose it's possible that a poor lead or connection could affect volume. Yes it will kill battery life if you run it direct from a phone but they can be used with a ( powered ) hub or Y cable.

The sound they give out must be pathetic when compared to tv speakers.

Depends on the TV ! - I haven't directly compared but I would say they are better than the speakers in a 19" TV I have.

This probably speaks more about the £50 speaker that you have

Agreed ! - I wasn't claiming that my bluetooth speaker was much - in fact it's a bit pathetic ! - and that probably goes for my 19" TV speakers as well.
I'm no expert on all these PC type speakers but I was intrigued by these and I thought they were pretty good value if you can get them at the sort of price in this deal ( which is roughly what I paid ). I accept that for most, they will be rather limiting in the way they can be used.
