Silly comment - these fish Tesco are selling are reared in cages off our coastline - using antibiotics and pathogenic chemicals to kill off the frequent sea lice infestations that end up infecting our wild fish and ultimately enjoyed are heading towards wiping out entirely our wild fish stocks. DON’T BUY THIS PRODUCT - Not from anywhere - it’s killing our natural fish https://www.anglingtrust.net/page.asp?section=1180

TK2013

You can go for essentials but obviously not just for this product which I'm sure many people understand. It's good to have a full salmon as this will last a long time rather than a few fillets so in that sense this is good.

Thank you rapid85. Very helpful. :)

rapid85

Costco online is not as good as in store because you often have to pay premium delivery included in the cost, which claims 'free' delivery. It's not and it's very naughty. For example and for arguments sake, you may pay £12 or so for toilet rolls in store whereas they're £17 with 'free' delivery online. I've taken those figures randomly but just for an example. That's not to say they don't have good online deals, they do, particularly if you're a big tech or appliance buyer. For those that have a local costco, membership to the bricks and mortor store is a no brainer if it has a fuel station and you'll save the membership in fuel alone.

ccc120

Is it worth becoming a costco online shopper member? Will it access to better deals?

In 2012, they said 100% would be sustainable by 2016: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/tesco-john-west-tuna-greenpeace-ellie-goulding-trawler-line-caught-sustainability-a7156126.html Unless you are a member of the Guardian, you will be unable to read this article (I'm not either), however, in 2015 they said that 100% of their catch would come from pole and line fishing, a sustainable source: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/11913625/John-West-breaks-promise-to-use-sustainable-fishing-methods.html According to their own website, only 20% of their catch today uses a sustainable method (pole and line) and much of that goes to retailers for their "own brand" labelling. So, that means that barely any John West labelled tuna uses a pole and line method, this is after they promised 100% would by 2017: https://www.john-west.co.uk/sustainability/responsible-sourcing/fishing-methods/ Their own website states that they would need too many boats to sustain "global demand", so they still use un-sustainable, damaging methods for the majority of their catch. They are now trying to diminish pole and line fishing by saying: "A label of Pole & Line or FAD free does not necessarily mean that the fish is sourced from a sustainable fishery; these are just fishing methods; one element of the supply chain." This is true, however, you need a sustainable fishery AND method of catching, they are ignoring one part of this. They also source a lot from Asia, a cannery in Thailand. I've lived and worked in Thailand/Malaysia as a diving instructor for four years, sadly there is a lot of corruption in those regions, money talks and they are a major player. I know that fishing there even occurs in "National Marine Parks", I have seen it first hand. They will get individual boat owners who will state it came from a sustainable area, but this doesn't mean it actually did. I cannot say 100% that they fish in such a protected area, but they will not know either, they are not monitoring exactly where boats fish. However, I know that their methods are not sustainable I have seen the effects of net fishing first hand on many, many occasions. I've seen a lot of discarded/torn nets covering reefs, occasionally we got to them in time to release some marine life, sadly, too often we were too late. Net fishing is incredibly destructive, it cannot target one specific species, it damages the environment, that is proven.

ArcaneSim

Proof?

Grumpitty

Probably Cheap cause it's horrible as usual

anouj

Don’t buy John West, Princes etc. They’re disgusting companies that don’t fish sustainably at all but claim to be. Most store own brands such as Aldi and Lidl and Sainsbury’s tuna is actually much better for the sea.

For those who enquired about the safety of farmed salmon may I suggest that there is plenty of information about this topic on the internet. Its something that I have been reading about for years, I dont know how anyone can have missed it. I am sure that Scottish salmon farms are on the whole well managed but not all..There was the One Show expose https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuNB-W8sTMg and another for good measure .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBRKH1xukno I also watched a program recently which highlighted the fact that the breakdown of highly toxic plastics in sea water is reaching such a concentration that it is already manifesting in fish and will impact us all in due course. For me as a fisherman I am just as concerned about the level of parasitic infestation I am seeing in the fish I catch. These parasites and worms can be seen in the eyes , intestines and flesh of the fish I catch. I cant recall anything like this in the 70's. I have virtually given up eating fish and cant see me returning to this once loved food any time soon.

wmidds

This is Norwegian, totally different, do some research on Scottish farms - they are miles ahead

Understood, and most welcome ;) I don't take any notice of anything a seller has to say. It's as you say, just trying to fool us. I just look at the bottom line, the cost. All the best. :)

jdbigguy

I just thought the point about stores attempts to fool us was a little interesting, I didn't feel that you in anyway were being negative and whilst I did use the word "support" it was really in reference to me being unsure about the long term pricing structure. Thanks for being concerned anyway. :D (y)

Gazz59

I've managed to drop a lot of weight eating tuna. I cant' SWIM any better, I should be like a soddin human torPEdo given the volume I've consumed, but hey-ho. My point is I do look out fer deals on this stuff, and it always makes me smile to see the cost in Waitrose...ouch, no...£3.50? it's the "norm", but like all prices & stores, even the location of the stores (so same "chain" different location) prices will fluctuate, I think it's a horses fer courses thing.

Gazz59

You don't need to support your point, nobody (me for example) has said anything negative about your post, quite the opposite in fact...you highlighted it's not Morrisons specific, and I'd call that a positive, since we don't have a Morrisons in this, or the next town along.

jdbigguy

I cannot be certain as I don't buy this regularly, but I am reasonably sure that £3.50 is the typical price and only goes above thisoccasionally so stores can claim they are reducing it to £3.50. According to mysupermarket this is only 9% below the average price, which supports my point.

I buy morrisons own tuna £3 for pack of 4, coming from John West too I think its of equal or higher quality. Tried stockwell mayonnaise thinking it was tesco own, Never tasted anything so vile. It has the look and texture of e45 and tastes of just oil. Can only think its a basics brand disguised to look own brand or higher, like their farm brand scam on produce, its just basics rebranded. Still searching for a decent quality mayo without spending farm shop money or making myself. The winiary branded one from the polish section has nice flavour, I've forgotten the catering brand that I used to love. Transformed what would be a standard takeaway chicken sandwich 😋😋

bargainBooze

Try Stockwell & Co, I was surprised coming from John West

squiby

These can't be called chunks, they're like the flakes and a lot of brown meat. I compared asda, tesco and morrisons and morrisons the only one that was actually a chunk of tuna. Also sad as it sounds I weighed the drained content and every tin for asda and tesco were atleast 10% less than stated whereas morrisons was closer to claimed weight. I needed to separate them for recipes so thought why not find out (embarrassed)

Timmybuktoo

This works out at 75p a can, not everyone has a local B&M so for the sake of a 4p per can difference this is a good deal. Asdas own brand isn't even the same product? Why not mention smart price tuna too (annoyed)

ibnMuhammad_

This is about normal price what I would expect. Same price in B&M also I believe. ... ah, just noticed B&M also have a 6 pack at £4.25 (usual price) = 71p per can. Otherwise, ASDA's own "Skipjack Tuna Chunks" in brine / sunflower, is a better deal - normally £2.84 for 4, but currently reduced to £2.69. Which works out at ~67p per can. ... Odd, couldn't post this comment with link to ASDA, because apparently "You cannot use the groceries.asda.com domain as it’s banned." ?! (skeptical)
