Although they work together they do different things. The harmony control gives you control over your it and WiFi devices. Smartthings can talk to the harmony and send it command buy ST is rather a home automation hub that links together other devices into a home automation set up.

I spent a good couple of hours messing years back to get my first harmony setup, since then it's become second nature though, & my kids & wife have never even seen more than one remote in my house.

The alexa voice commands are great now they've given us the US skill, finally! The youngest kids being able to say alexa turn on Disney junior/boomerang etc instead of putting their grubby mits on my Elite is a bonus!

Very nice, still worth it at £100 in my view, its used alot. I haven't setup with Alexa, but Google was a breeze. However I actually never touch the physical remote, and rarely use the app now, I built my own app using Tasker on Android. Since I can process any voice command I want, it's more powerful. For example I have integrated a TV guide web service, can say "watch programme the chase", it will check if it's on now or soon, then change to the most suitable channel. If you are looking to go a step further, definitely check out Tasker and it's Harmony plugin

I think I'm getting the echo and logitech harmony remote with hub for Xmas and just want to get my head around how it works!! Thanks v. much

The main differences I found was the ability to add routines to your automation but saying that, the latest update in Alexa now has a basic routines feature. Alexa is only able to access a single Logitech hub; this deficiency can be overcome by using Yonomi. With Yonomi you are able to access multiple hubs with Alexa which is useful when you have a multi-room setup. Yonomi is also compatible with devices that Alexa natively is not. For example, Sonos just recently released a Alexa skill for their Speaker range but I've been using Alexa/Yomoni/Harmony hub combo to control my Sonos 5.1 speakers ever since I bought the speaker system last year.

I use an app called "Yonomi" to link both Hubs to Alexa. That way I can access all the devices connected to both hubs from any Echo dot. There is no confusion between hubs as long as you nane each device wisely.

I'd literally drive myself mad, shouting at Google Home or Alexa to change …I'd literally drive myself mad, shouting at Google Home or Alexa to change the volume The remote is excellent; I can use Google Home to start an activity, using Assistant Shortcuts I can say "Hey Google, I want to listen to some music" and it'll trigger the relevant activity in the Hub, set the lights, find the right input on the amp etc, but if I'm watching something or listening to an album, I don't want to have to say "Hey Google, ask Harmony to Pause" or "Hey Google, ask Harmony to turn the volume up a bit" each time I want to do something very basic. IMO for most applications the remote is still a necessity. Unless you truly can't live without voice activated magic.

I guess i can see your point but remember you can use your smart phone app for free plus you can actually pre-set the number of your incremental volume increases/decreases or Say "Alexa increase volume by 4". You don't actually have to keep repeating the command, you can just tell the Echo whatever number of increments you want & that's what it will increase the volume by in one command. Trust me, once you start to use it regularly, you soon get to know what volume 4 or volume 7, 8,9, sounds like then it becomes so natural, you'll wonder why you haven't always done things this way.

Just as an FYI... Sequences has just been released on amazon's echo devices, though they're currently a little basic. And harmony actions can be controlled directly now, so you can say "Alexa, pause" I believe to pause activities. Luckily I use an amp with predefined scenes that adjust volumes etc to my liking automatically... but to be honest, the volume command through Alexa increases my setup in jumps of 3db, so I'm pretty happy. Agreed, though, whilst it is a neat trick I still prefer the simplicity and discretion of a remote.

I want to keep the number of hubs to a minimum and currently have SmartThing and Nest. Looking to buy Hue Hub but this seems to be a much better option.

Nope, smart home is just like the original Alexa, sees the hub over wifi, hub then talks to lights. You could get wifi bulbs instead which tend to be much cheaper, the site favourite Yeelights being a prime example. Then get Home Assistant set up and control absolutely everything from it, no more phone full of crappy apps, block them all from phoning home every second of the day and it's then easy to make the lot interact and you actually can then have a genuinely smart home.

I would be waiting until black Friday usually have great deals on both …I would be waiting until black Friday usually have great deals on both harmony and echo products..

Agreed. There were some good discounts last time. I picked up a Harmony Elite last Black Friday for £115, which is a decent drop from the RRP of £280 (Depending on how accurate that RRP is ). They also had a discount on refurb Dots, so I grabbed one of those to use with it. I'm still not convinced I'm using it to the full extent of its capability, but it's come in very handy after my dog chewed up the original LG remote control and left me with no way to control the TV other than the Harmony/Alexa controls.

A few months on, I got a standard Harmony Hub (No remote with this one) to control the TV upstairs on an Amazon Warehouse deal for £60, but I've had to use the Yonomi app to set up a different set of command controls, because Alexa defaults to thinking I'm trying to control the living room TV if I use the regular voice phrases. Customer support says they're working on getting multiple Harmony hub setups to recognise each other and learn which command is for each unit, but I'll believe it when I see it.

All in all, for the reduced price, I'm happy with it. I wouldn't pay the full price, at least not until they've improved it for tech amateurs like me

I've got the digital copies of the first two and played them for the first time in the last few months. Really want to play this, but doubt it will drop in price much. Hmm.. Who needs to feed their kids?

For other than the basic of functions, removing the LCD display from any Logitech Harmony remote negates what makes them stand above the rest of the universal remote control market other than macro ability.

Being able to program the display to label extra buttons from the original remote is what truly makes them universal.
