My old Ideal boiler had a built in timer. I altered the wiring in the kitchen and airing cupboard when I replaced the boiler and timer. These changes made it easy when I changed to a Hive. My neighbour with a different house design wanted a Hive Heating and HW kit fitted and it took me about two hours to work out all the unlabelled wiring. My son wanted a Hive Heating kit for a combi boiler fitting and it took me about 10 minutes as it was a simple case of swapping four wires. If you are intelligent enough to work out what you need to do from a wiring diagram and work out what you currently have, most people will be able to work it out. If you are in doubt just ask locally and someone will help.

Just bought this. Fed up of the wife leaving the heating up too high and it comes on during the night. Do people with these usually bypass the timer settings on the boiler, so have the heating on constant and adjust it all via the Hive itself?

Thanks for this! To get matching smart radiator valves they are about £54 each usually but I got a 5 pack and 3 pack on Hive itself, then paying 2.99 for a monthly something that got me 10% off works out £38.99 per smart TRV. Also light bulbs on offer on AO website so grabbed some of these.

Just an update - I had mine fitted today. I bought the thermostat and the hub. Engineer supplied the receiver. Engineer was polite and helpful and explained how it all works. I asked him to fix the thermostat on the wall for me which he did.

I'm glad you got it sorted finally!

At long last I have managed to get an install date for the 15th July. (y)

The BG engineer came to install everything today, all went well and am very happy. I actually bought the Thermostat + hub (no receiver sent). I have a conventional boiler + hot water cylinder (not a combi). The engineer turned up supplied the receiver (heating and water) and the hub. Everything was set up, the engineer was courteous, on time, and very helpful to show me how everything worked. They did not install the thermostat onto my wall, but i think that's because my current one isn't on the wall. I will just need to return the hub from BT and job done!

My receiver arrived this morning. I guess I was just lucky

The signal booster made little difference. The symptoms are: red light on the receiver, thermostat says ‘no signal’ or stuck on ‘receiving…’, heating and hot water shows as offline in the app and cannot be controlled via app or thermostat. We tried a number things, including putting all equipment within a metre of each other, turning off WiFi devices to reduce interference, moving around furniture. Nothing worked. The eventual solution was to set up the thermostat and receiver in ‘standalone mode’. They connection has been solid but the consequence is you no longer have remote control via the app. You will have to set everything up via the thermostat, fiddily but doable. This is acceptable to me personally as it solves some of the problems I had with my old setup, but it’s no longer a ‘smart’ device and makes the hub redundant. There’s not much difference to a basic £60 Siemens wirelessthermostat.

We started getting issues where the thermostat would lose signal to the receiver every couple of days. If that happens you can’t even use the app to control the heating and hot water. If you have this problem, explain that to Hive and they’ll send you a signal booster free of charge (they only do this if the system was installed by BG). The booster arrived next day and we are seeing how it goes.

Great stuff! Even though I have to wait for an install date I may as well return my unopened hub then as there is no point in having it if BG are supplying this too. Very odd for BT to do a bundle with a hub when an engineer supplies one on visit.:)
