I had a look at the offer on Amazon.it, but the versions in the deal are not the extended ones (unless you want to buy them individually), so not really comparable. Some good deals there, though.

Actually, I think that may be the limited edition version.

If you check out the photos, one of them shows the Blurays in the amazon packaging. You can see the Ultraviolet strip on it.

I did not see the film's originally at cinemas then I watched extended as I wondered what the hype was about. Having seen the standard blu rays 18 months ago as they were like a fiver for the trilogy, I am now prepared to wait until they come out on UHD blu ray. That and the matrix and gladiator.

I've got a 4k setup but could be a long wait for those because I don't think they've been confirmed yet. But having never seen the extended editions myself I thought I might as well bite at this price.

Cheers op...hobbit at this price...ordered ta.

Okay fair comment. The quality of blu ray is unsurpassed. At this price, I would still wait for the uhd version, which incidentally has the blu ray as separate disk. But I can understand why you would want this box set especially now with the 15 Percent code

You can get The Hobbit 3D Extended Box Set but it costs nearly as much as this.

2K is 2048x1080 and typically cropped to 1998×1080. So not that much better than HD at 1920x1080. I doubt anyone would be able to tell at normal viewing distances.

Remember as well that official 2k isn't HD(1080p) and official 4k isn't UHD (2160p) so a 2k master is better quality than HD, but still not near UHD

LOTR was filmed on 35mm but then scanned-in for digital post processing at 2K. The Hobbit was "filmed" digitally at 5K but then downsized to 2K for post processing. It would require a lot of rework on grading and digital SFX to produce a native 4K of either. They would most likely just run it through an upscaler instead.
I believe the SFX were rendered in 2K so would need to be upscaled.
I believe you're right, and PJ is not willing to work on a 4k release. There's an interesting article on recent films and masters here http://gadgetflux.net/list-of-4k-mastered-hollywood-movies/

Yeah, they're old films now (age wise) and with 4K movies available for circa £15, then it's doesnt compare. Albeit quality... But there's plenty of very decent 4K movies out that I really enjoy and would like to upgrade to.

Exactly right. DVDs I use for Plex because it struggles to stream very high quality. I have Plex movies on in the background while I'm working. Blu-Rays and 4k etc for movies that demand that level - like Guardians of the Galaxy 1&2 etc. It's true, most older films do not need to be Blu-Ray. The idea is stupid. I have a large classic collection and SD or less is just fine. Not sure I want to waste time and money on "Plan 9 from Outer Space" in 4k (excited)

I agree. Plus it seems most forget its about whats on the format. Hopefully its at least a good film, you are paying to experience it once or maybe more. An appreciation thing maybe. I prefer DVDs and Bluray to streaming. Blurays for 3D / action mostly, DVDs are fine for other films. Streaming for me - after getting fed up with the things that can go wrong with it - is good for rentals. Plus theres nothing better than having shelves full of films you can admire! Gives a house a bit of personality, plus if you are seriously bored you can rearrange lol. Having it all on digital is so damn boring in comparison - and if it messes up its a bitch to sort it out. Not for me thanks.

Its not about patience as mentioned its time consuming, ripping them, re-selling the disks etc etc (annoyed) In the little time I have off (from making films, TV and commercials (strong) (popcorn) ) I would like to use it wisely like instantly streaming :{ Plus DVDs aren't even HD (poo) SD doesn't look great on an HD TV let alone a 4K one (skeptical) The whole thing is obsolete :( the only disk drive in my house is inside the PS4 8) which also has Netflix and every other streamer on it (nerd) Ripping DVDs is like flogging a dead donkey :p :) Do you still watch your laser disks on a 4:3 television set? Is the remote wired in? 3 terrestrial channels yeah (lol) (lol) (lol) Im just messing with you, but the whole process of ripping SD disks does seem a tad long though (cheeky) Its clear you are a collector/archiver and got something going on that you have pride in at 6K films, so my hat off to you (y) I guess its a generational thing

I used to enjoy splicing audio tapes!!

It's true, ripping them takes a patience that I wouldn't expect some people to have (I'm guessing you're one of them with your negativity). I've done around 6k of them. *Just a little hint for you - you don't need to stop your entire life just to watch the DVDs ripping. There's an outside world, you know? You can do other things. Also, try and think it through - once they're ripped, on a HDD, the DVDs and cases themselves are put into the loft, and thus negating your space argument. So, YOU get with the program and I'll see your :{ emoji and raise you a :p

Pretty daft comparison there. 1) They are the extended editions 2) They can be watched multiple times 3) They can be watched by more than one person 4) They have special features etc.

If you're getting 3D films at the cinema for £9 each then that's a bargain in itself! These films are great and plenty of people would watch them more than once, and from the comfort of your own home if you wish, so a pretty decent bargain for many people.

How is £10 per film a good deal? About the same price as seeing them in the cinema.

Great deal (y) Thanks OP :D

Saw fellowship of the rings in Poundland the other day too.

Postage is £2.50, but you can buy up to 10 items per order. Good compared to say the Amazon Marketplace where 1 DVD/blu-ray is £1.26 del.

Plus postage £1.50 or if you collect from a store, it may cost more

The only unexpected thing that could happen about the Hobbit is that Peter Jackson coulndn't have made it a chore.

Although my luck in poundland stores has been rather variable; this is one item I've noticed in a few - in case you have one nearby and would prefer a new copy.
