If you value the original item packaging (as well as the item itself) then be aware of an issue I had. I ordered various Hornby items from this deal for home delivery and they all came in a large paper sack (like one of the old large potato sacks). All of the item boxes were squashed, dented, and one had two large tears in it. Luckily the items were undamaged and I cannot faff around sending them back as WH Smith customer services is a nightmare. I have had books delivered the same with the corners all bashed in. So only one of three orders I have placed with WH Smith have been packed adequately. It makes me appreciate the effort other sellers put into packing my orders to ensure they arrive undamaged.
The City Express is a great set for the price. The drive car is reasonably heavy and has working lights and it comes with trackmat, newer power controller and a switch junction.
Baby you can drive my train …
John Lewis and Amazon may be price matching too - only looked at the Beatles Eurostar tho
Yep, decoder fits in the tender. Same for sound speaker if wanted
DCC ready too, which is an easy fit.
Anyone on the fence about this set, I predict a price increase shorty. I posted the Hornby Platform 9 31/4 set same time as this and its gone up by £3 already. Not interested in heat, just want people to grab it while they can
The older sets had a castle class loco. This one has the correct Hall class. I dont think the set with hall class has been £99 unless it was a serious special offer. The Hornby Hall class this is based off only came out in 2015-2016
Cheapest it’s ever been is £99. The train is the same from years ago, just in a new branded box. Early sets didn’t have the light at the front. And, from Order of the Phoenix set, the class was updated with a front light

We got given a basic oval steam train set when it was reduced to £99 from £149 at Lidl or something. The track and trains all seem ok but the controller feels really cheap and nasty, very lightweight and very thin wires. The whole thing should be priced about £50 certainly not £100/£150.
Are Hornby sets ok nowadays? I know people complain that Scalextrics aren’t as well made nowadays…
I'm not into model trains, but if I was, I think I'd buy this one :)
Don’t forget 8.8% cash back at TopCashBack Good deal
It's a rather rubbish control system as it can only control one train. Just beware it's NOT digital. Asda were selling a similar (steam) set with a standard controller for £20 last year, so you're basically paying a huge premium to control the train using the phone app. You'd be far better with a cheap DCC system that allows you to expand, add sound etc. The Hornby e-link is quite good though the Railmaster software is quite dated.
Whoo Whoo !!! Actually quite a nice set.

The holidays are coming...the holidays ate coming
Hi, what are the terms of this voucher code please? Doesn't seem to work on a different product that I added to my basket. Thanks
It's the same track as you get with this: Hornby Valley Drifter Model Train Set £58.99 @ WH Smith’s I thought that was a brilliant deal - bearing in mind how much (how little) you get in an expansion pack costing almost half as much as the complete set. This one is a bit more fun - but presumably they have to pay something to Coke for using their branding. Hence the greater cost. Think of it this way - if given as a gift and the recipient gets the bug - that's Christmas, Birthday, Easter, School Report pressies sorted out for the whole family - possibly for a lifetime.

£115 for a battery operated trainset? Hard pass.
Yes sorry realised this afterwards (y)
It's Hornby, with Lionel:- "Hornby, in partnership with Lionel Trains, have produced a new train set, depicting the famous Hogwarts Express from the popular Harry Potter book and film series. This battery operated set comes complete with a remote control and is the perfect way to run a huge locomotive and coaches in your home or garden for a fantastic price. "
Just a pity they don't have real (imitation) steam, would make a big difference and set it apart.
If Harry Potter wasn't in the title nobody would be voting this hot! Bought.... :P

Unfortunately they have been circling the drain for years (decades?). They are in the unique position to produce some high quality models but they seem to continue on their race to the bottom. Far smaller outfits like Revolution trains are able to build low number high quality products for a price near Hornby.
Pleanty sub £140 on ebay. So cold from me
Analogue and no socket to convert to digital. Ouch. \let me know when it arrives at platform 2022.
Hornby have no longer got quality control on these budget sets, there extremely faulty... especially this set, look on Amazon reviews.

Hornby Play Trains Set £33 @ Amazon£33£54.9940% off Free P&P FreeAmazon Deals
I think its probably aimed at 3-7 year olds as an intro to the main hornby range
same price in argos
Interesting safety information, which if true leads to a very small market of only children aged 36 months... Looks interesting though, might have bought if we didn't get the Lego ones over Christmas... Thanks OP
Flash the local express? Think I'd get arrested
Voted hot for price but personally, I think the Lego Duplo set is well worth the extra money (although you do need a smartphone/tablet for the remote control app).

Not true. Hornby are hugely antagonistic to its distributors and plans to move more and more into direct sales, cutting out model shops and the like. They are a horrible company to deal with as a distributor.
All for supporting Hornby. I think in general prices are cheaper elsewhere as I guess Hornby doesn't wish to undercut its distributors. By the way WHSmith are selling this (new & unscuffed box) for £10 more.
That is true right in this moment, but overall it’s not a great deal when it’s been selling for a lot cheaper without a scuffed box.
But as those prices are no longer available this is the current best price.
Not a great deal. It’s been on discount for less than this a few times over the past few months
