This seems good price for the new processor and decent graphics card. Hot me thinks

Doubt that exists to be honest.

true but then again the 20 series is not the jump up the 10 series was so the performance is still one of the best you can get in a laptop. I don't doubt it will get cheaper and maybe quite soon, for right now I consider this good value (assuming the laptop is actually any good, thermals, battery, screen quality etc)

Yeah the power benefit is worth considering.

The 1070 is 3 years old now and was right at the top for a while (other than the 1080), I wouldn’t buy a 1070 laptop now really and I wouldn’t pay this much for a 1660 Ti powered one either, when they reach mainstream they should be a bit more reasonable. I’d expect this to be around £100 less despite the decent CPU.

This i5 has hyperthreading, it's basically a slight upgrade over the i7-7700HQ

I think you'd be better off with the 2060 and an i5. Most games aren't cpu bound.

How does the RTX 2060 compare to the new GTX 1660 Ti? As the Omen with the GTX 1660 Ti is only £50 more and has an i7 9th Gen

The cpu I wouldn't worry about; it's rarely crucial, but you make a good point about the 1070 prices floating around.

in the PLUS: screen (144 IPS) SSD (256GB M2) in the MINUS: RAM (8GB) CPU (i5, still.. 8th gen!) Other considerations: GPU/Price is not optimal. The pricerange is of a 1070 possibly with 16RAM and a good CPU. However this is a 20xx series, so "futureproof"..? Haven't checked heating&noise or overall reviews and known issues.. Also the i7+16RAM version is priced at 1300 Dilemmas..

Size 15.6" laptops are not as popular as they used to be, so you may struggle finding one exactly to your specs. That is mostly why these kind of comments appear on 15.6" threads - because we constantly see better specced 14" laptops at this price.

I've been looking for a laptop with a quad core processor with 8GB Ram, 256GB SSD and a 15.6 inch IPS screen at around £500, give or take a bit, with out success. People on various threads keep indicating that these sort of deals are about, but where are they? Anyone seen any? Thanks (y)

Bought one a few weeks ago. Not my favourite hp business laptop. It's certainly at the bottom end. I dont care about the screen. Speed of laptop is more important

I dunno, unless you're a gamer or power user most people can't tell the difference between equivalent specified i3 and i7 boxes from a user interface pov. Have to say I just don't think this is that great a deal.

If you want QHD for this price, you have to put up with an absolutely dreadful processor, so for most people it's not worth it.

For this price I disagree, and would look to get at least qhd. For me, however, I am not prepared to compromise on the screen. Others may make different choices.

1080p is fine on 15.6". Also more resolution would just drain battery even faster it's a waste plus make it more expensive. As long as it's not the infamous 1366x768 resolution plaguing most cheap laptops it's good.

Can anyone tell me if it has a fan, if so, is it noisy?

Quick word of warning if you're thinking of adding another drive. My experience is from a another model but I suspect the same for this.. there was a bay for the drive but had to buy the connecting cable separately, part number in the manual was easy to identify but price was around £50. I eventually found that it was a the same connector for many HP laptops but the part number was different. I bought one for £9 from eBay described as "Drive Cable Connector 6017B0416801 HP Envy 15-J Series 15-J184SA 15-J032TX HDD Drive Cable Connector"

The i3 CPU is not bad at all, other than being outdated but Ryzen is not a lot more and will give you more overall value. If this were my price range I would move to the Ryzen machines especially if AO have any.

Thanks for the info, been looking for a while and this is cheapest I could find for a 256gb SSD drive and “minimum” i3 processor

HP started putting these clickpads in the consumer laptops for a while and they’re horrible. The Elitebooks had physical buttons which was great until the latest 8th gen CPU models... but they’re very good glass touchpads so it’s kind of ok. The bigger issue is their US-style half height enter key, not sure if this model suffers from it. Ok laptop on the price front (the 4GB of RAM is real penny pinching...) but it’s literally the slowest i3 in the Kaby Lake range (i3-7020U) and at this price you’re within striking distance of Ryzen 3 and 5 laptops which will offer better performance (and light gaming).

4415Y in the Go vs 4415U here. Not sure why it would run slow in Chrome, this is ample performance for Chrome, I’ve run it on far less potent hardware.

thats a 4415 which is 30 perc slower, plus the surface may be trying to protect battery and reduce heat so slow down cpu. plus it may have a lot of stuff running thats not needed like cortana windows update etc. biggest prob with this laptop is low res screen

I'm just thinking of the reviews for the Surface Go where the CPU can't even run Chrome well. Maybe I'm thinking of a slightly different CPU?

That's normal. Once games start using the new features of 20X0 you should see better performance from the new series across the board. That said, at this moment you might get better value out of a 1060 or 1070, as you can get them for less, especially 1060.

I own a desktop for my game playing but used to use my laptop now then to be a bit more sociable. Also easier to take places. My current laptop is pretty old now, with a 710m graphics chip and 768 res. I also use it to work from home so need at least a 1080p res. My I was going to buy a 1070 laptop the other week, until I learned of the new 1660 ti laptops coming. What I cant decide on is whether 15.6 is enough or go for 17.3 screen. Also, one thing to consider, the 2060's are underclocked to around 960mhz with a boost of around 1200mhz. Reports of older 1070 laptops outperforming the 2060's due to their higher clock speeds.

Great price for a 2060 laptop this soon after release. Heat

That's obviously up to you. This is a good deal. You can always wait for something better but you might get stuck doing that over and over. If you need a laptop, buy a laptop, this 20X0 series is brand new so you can't go wrong with them if you get a good deal. That said, the new generation of consoles, which will after all dictate what sort of requirements PC games will also have, could potentially have more powerful cards than this series, so it might be sensible to wait another year for the new series if you do not need the laptop right now.

they've not gutted the RTX 2060 too hard for laptop usage either: https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-2060-Laptop-Graphics-Card.384946.0.html It's *slightly* faster than a desktop 1070... not bad.

Current rumours are 4Q19 or 2020 but it's all speculation. Still 14nm process, quad core, only small gains. Possibly one 6 core model (i9?). These "Whiskey Lake" are a refresh of 8th gen (small gain) and tbh haven't been out that long. No point delaying a purchase.

HP 255 G7 Ryzen 3 8GB 256GB Laptop not a bad price for a Ryzen with as SSD

Yes I don’t know why everyone is getting excited. £40 more gets you the Lenovo equivalent with the Ryzen 5 quad-core and Vega 8 graphics. Vega 3 has just 3 CUs, barely even worth it! And the HP 255 is made of the cheapest, least durable materials known to man.

Yep, battery access is a pain but the other specs are very good, for new, at the price point (especially 256GB SSD and 8GB memory) so shouldn't need openning up for a couple of years at least (for that stupid battery).

Please remember the Ryzen 3 2200u is a dual core part with a very weak GPU. In terms of perf it's a bit faster than a UHD 620.

Bought thanks :D

so I bought this and there something everyone should know before buying: the battery and every thing else is sealed inside a case that's a right pain to open, so modifying this in any way is going to a massive pain, including changing the battery in a few years once it's warn down, i phoned support and apperently it's battery is part number is L11119-855, I was told to call the store to find out the price, who told me they couldn t find it and to contact a third party(it's about £25 on ebay btw) aside from that it's a decent laptop, tomb raider 2013 benchmark gets about 30fps on normal settings at 900p, 40fps on 720p and 20 fps on 1080p

Not to go into the whole Apple - bad debate, but watch some Louis Rossman vids on macbooks - they are not as premium as people think they are.

From my 12 years experience of repairing laptops, hp def not my fav manufacture but by far not worst. this looks good vaule for money, ain't bad price for spec. n it's not one of there bad chassis either... 95% of hp machines aren't premium... this def isn't but what u expect for sub £500. The drivers were more than likly the wifi cards manufactures not hp's....however we did get alot with wifi problems...if still having the issue with it 9/10 a bios update for ur model, from hp web site, sorts it.

That maybe true, but I still wouldn't but one, their software support isn't great. If it was just one I could have said it was a one of. But I had the same on two separate laptops. You may have had a different experience, I'd say you were lucky unless HP have upped their game

Get what you pay for? With the exception of Apple and some other niche brands, HP is the most premium laptop manufacturer.

I would buy another HP laptop ever, I've had problems with drivers. WiFi stops working, then forced to buy an external WiFi dongle because HP drivers were rubbish. on another HP laptop the hinge gave way. Basically you get what you paid for..

I see there's a difference of opinion whether this is a good deal or not for the spec. I don't know much about laptops but this is the spec I was looking for for light day to day use. Please can someone advise whether I should just get this? Wait for Intel's next processor to come out and be a price drops? Get this instead? The thing that might set this apart is that the SSD is M2. Does anyone with knowledge of the chassis type know if there's a spare slot in there for a second sata-style HDD/SSD?

Expectations differ from what's actually out there in the market. There's not enough of these specs for the money out there. Even then I'm skeptical of this deal because of the sheer level of bloatware on HP laptops. I prefer a clean windows 10.

Interesting. Glad I read the comments on this thread. I've been searching for a capable but cheap enough (Under £500) laptop for leaving at work to play some older games (Battlefield 4, Modern warfare series, CS:Go and maybe some newer ones but not AAA titles) so some of the items you listed may be ideal for me. Bought one of these, that are supposedly A1 graded, which by their own words means "as new". I didn't even manage to get through windows setup before the fan started to fail spectacularly, which brings into question whether they even test the "refurbished" systems they're selling, let alone refurbish them. Either that or they have extraordinarily low quality assurance standards. Have submitted a return request, will see where it goes from here. I would strongly urge avoiding this deal for the time being. Update: Still waiting for them to even action my return request, most likely gonna have to repair the laptop myself. Their customer support is the worst I have ever dealt with, they were faster to send me an email about upgrading to their extended warranty than they were to actually honour said warranty. Hopefully this will save someone a lot of time and money, especially someone without the knowledge to do laptop repairs for them self, as you'll receive no support from this company seemingly after they have your money.
