I don't think that's down to knowledge, really. More personal preference.

Without sounding like a design snob, if you know anything about design & aesthetics these are quite ugly looking guitars compered to a Les Paul or a PRS

Can Anyone who bought this comment on how well it was set up out of the box?

I managed to get my hands on a Yamaha Pacifica after hearing numerous praise for it on a squier deal on this site. And I can honestly say the sound difference is vast. The yamaha is heavier but sounds much better. And I can hear the distorted over drive which the squier never produced. Plus there were a few other snags on it, such as razor sharp fret edges that hadnt been sanded down, a really wonky screw where the cable jack is etc etc. Obviously, at about £270 for the yamaha and £90 for the squier, the qualityor lack thereof is understandable.

Not sure TBH, I've only ever disassblemled them; they were all soldered onto base but the cover was metal. I was thinking of the EMG black plastic covers when I posted and the cheap eBay shiny ones might not be metal anyway. It's easy enough to do, it's just one blob on each lengthways side on the inside. :{

Fantastic buy, right there. Yeah the G-force kit got some hate, but if you can get one at a good price... may as well. I had a Gibson Les Paul Standard in Alpine white, which I had to sell on many years back. Regretted it ever since :(

Yeh the 100th anniversary one with the self tuning thingys. Everyone hated them but they are easily removable and you got to own a Gibson for Epiphone money

depends on what style he likes, some people like this style of guitar, some like Fender Stratocasters and Fender Telecasters instead. his musical tastes may help you determine this. however, to answer your question, nothing wrong with these guitars, however in your specific case, for this money I would look into Fender Stratocaster or Telecasters. they have a nice mid priced range that would satisfy a brand name guitar, with taste, sound and classic looks. good luck!

yomanation

Les Paul purists should stick to Gibson anyway, Epiphone should have done these more modern models ages ago. They look good. My one gripe is that damn Epiphone headstock.

ilovelilac

Thanks guess I'll have to ask some more questions

JamesSmith

Agree with the comment above - you need to find out what type of guitar your husband likes and wants to play.. maybe ask him! (y)

crap_I_dont_really_need

Such a hard question to answer. Guitars are so personal. You're better off first finding our if he is a Gibson/Epiphone man, or a Fender/Squire kind of guy. Some people are one or the other. In my opinion, I think these are overpriced, being Epiphkne guitars. I do own an Epiphkne guitar that can easily compete with a Gibson, buy mine was made in the early 90s in Korea. I actually prefer to buy guitars second hand and so do many other. Some people feel that they took more care with making them and used better materials back then. However, this is wide ranging. Sorry not really been able to help!!

I ordered this for my 9 year old. She's been playing my 20 year old Squire Tele. They don't make cheap guitars like they used to, this is extremely lightweight and I feel wouldn't last the test of time. However, it does feel great to play, and looks lovely in person. For the money I'm happy, and if she keeps it up for a year and wants a more expensive guitar next Christmas, then this one has done its its job.

christhedrummer

I would say it should be a good bet. If not this then there is the next step up of the Les Paul special which is normally around the £100 mark, or the fender squire range has a number of good entry level guitars (the squire bullet Mustang gets good reviews and can be found for around £95)

Paul_Mawson

Would this suit my 15 year old daughter who is intending to learn guitar?

fishmaster

I agree, although it's dependent on how well setup the guitar is, and construction factors and it doesn't mean that this guitar plays badly, but I can't comment on this guitar specifically as I've never tried it out.

andrewp

I learnt to play on a cheap guitar and couldn’t believe how much easier it was to play once I splashed out on something that was better quality. A lot less pressure needed on the strings to get a clean sound

I agree. I have to say, I actually find the Juniors, even the cheapest ones better than the Tributes. Better value for money, as they're a little more simple in design, the all round setup plays better. I guess as they're not trying to pretend to be something they're not, as the Tributes are. For all round awesomeness though, I do prefer my ES 335.

richstroller

A completely different beast to my LP studio. I wasn’t happy with that. Tested quite a few different guitars alongside the Standard, and only an American Original 60s Tele came close to the LP Standard for me.

id10t

How do these compare in playability to the tribute series? I have a tribute but never warmed to it and went back to variations on the strat.

Nothing to do with the particular guitar, it's all down to playing (if you use a lot of big bends or not) and the headstock design which is bad (but looks great and iconic, hence whey don't change it).

addisj

Have to disagree here. I have a chambered Les Paul, a non weight relieved and a Swiss cheese modern weight relieved. There is a noticeable difference with the chambered one. Nothing to do with tone from the pups. It's a frequency thing. They have less body in the tone and more of an acoustic quality. Less mid focused and compressed which LPs are known for.

yomanation

Tone difference mainly comes from the different pickups. If you play it acoustically, the chambered one should sound different but plugged in it will be virtually identical. As for this guitar, good price but damn, Les Paul without the trapezoid inlays just looks wrong.

jrah1

She pretty.

Has been this price for quite some time. Last Black Friday, one shop was selling for £499. Occasionally, MusicSquare sell these for around the £520 mark. Nice guitar and about as cheap as it gets for an American-made Gibson.

Personally I'm gonna wait for the new series to drop in price, or grab a used one from the new series. The new Gibson management is doing a really good job. I hated the small frets in 2015-2019, now all come with medium jumbo again. On the downside, they are not cryogenically treated anymore so they don't last forever.

teacherphil

I stand corrected. Apart from the G force tuning it looks like a real guitar. Normal nut, no push pull pots etc. I still think that you're better off waiting a few months for some 2018 reductions. The 2019 standards are now below £2k

yomanation

Past a certain point you are just paying for cosmetics, but that point is near £1000. Quality guitar components are really expensive. ;)

I'm afraid people are dumb enough to think this would be a good guitar. I've dealt with people like that most of my life. Even today I was sat in Greggs and a so called deaf & dumb man came up to me and shoved a sponsorship sheet under my nose. No badge, a dodgy looking sheet and I recalled a news article about this scam so I politely told him to p off. He goes to the next table and she gets her purse out straight away. I still say a secondhand Squire Strat or even a Yahama Pacifica would be a better guitar than this at roughly the same price.

martinelsen

Who said anything about this being the same as a proper Epiphone Les Paul? No one in their right mind is going to think at £85 they’re going to get a “real” Les Paul - dont keep stating the obvious. Jesus. Moaning again.

ketsunoanna

looks like a toy, for that price pick up a used on Ebay, with half decent pickups and body

theghurka

I'm being a realist. Common sense should tell you that some people are going to buy this guitar and think they will have a real Les Paul. That is not the case. As I pointed out, this is basically firewood. I can buy a lot more firewood for £85. Better to buy a proper Epiphone Les Paul secondhand. One with a decent body and humbuckers not single coils. This has as much in common with a proper Epiphone Les Paul as John McCririck does with fashion. Anyone with experience of guitars would tell you the same!

martinelsen

It costs £85 for Christ’s sake. What more would you expect? Jesus. Some people are just moaning minnies.
