None of your responses seem to make sense as a direct response to what was written. Is it possible you're seeing criticism where there is none intended?

I was merely trying to point out that veganism doesn't have a red line. It's a flexible concept for people to embrace the best they can to an extent. You obviously can't claim you need to eat meat unless you're basically an eskimo essentially! However, you can claim that insects are unavoidably killed during the farming process and that you have no control over that. This is fairly logical and reasonable. It's nowhere near as woolly as you would like to suggest. But if it makes you happy to say that, who am I to stand in your way. You've tried to create more things to disagree on. I'm used to it. You're trying to explain illogical behaviour. People will do all sorts of mental gymnastics to reconcile the fact they love some species and not others. I was guilty of it for a long time. I'm capable of realising I was wrong. Not all of us can unfortunately, but I will try to help people move on from their past self where I can. I would also really encourage you to research the concept of being an apex predator, it contrasts with being "top of the food chain", and more accurately represents our position. Also on a personal level I would encourage you to consider whether you think the argument that vegans are trying to make is really best undermined or whether we all benefit and therefore you should be supportive even if you don't think you have the capacity to do it yourself rather than trying to call us all "vicious little apes". It seems paradoxical to describe yourself as an intellectual and then try to use an actually woolly concept best described as primitive instinct to explain your lack of action in the face of environmental collapse. Best of luck on your journey to veganism. We're all going that way whether you like it or not!

I'm in absolutely no doubt that your ideals are heartfelt and please don't let anything I say diminish them. There are a many, many different reasons why people become vegan as well as your own, and because of it, as many different places to drop the line as there are adherents, and therefore, from the outside, can seem a little woolly, and hence seems prone to the kind attack I was replying to. Just constantly restating your premise doesn't bridge the conceptual gulf with vegan/vegetarian critics if they simply don't agree with those premises. Your intended microphone-dropping quote "as far as possible" is, by definition, inherently subjective. So you have to acknowledge the criticism - that yes, objectively it's all a bit arbitrary unless you buy into that particular moral framework - and reframe your argument, if you want to get somewhere practical changing a few people's minds. That doesn't negate your ideals because they are subjective to you. All ideals are. Hence the name. Your reply is a good example of how many a good cause rips itself apart with "holier-than-thou" infighting. We're almost entirely on the same side, why not just leave it at that? We are a living conundrum. We have enlightened, intellectual, abstracting brains that allow us to conceive of a less cruel world, and the empathy to understand why that's a good thing, but we're still also vicious little apes who got to be at the top of the food chain by being the nastiest, cruelest, unthinking pleasure led carnivore on the planet. Reconciling that is a struggle for both society and for most individuals. Your ideal is perfect. Maybe you are too. The rest of us aren't so lucky, we struggle every day... and just keep trying to be a bit better - whatever "better" is.

JustaSingh

I haven't eaten meat in over 10yrs. But the recent 'holier than thou' attitude on this kind of stuff is alarming. I'm reminded of many sections in books by the likes of eckaart tolle where such things are now being used as 'ego boosters'. It goes back to that old joke about how do you know someone is a vegan? They'll tell you. Does a plant based lifestyle really make for a better world? If you look at pure kill count for 1 acre of cow pasture Vs 1 acre of say soy crop, thousands /indeed millions of lifeforms are killed every year on the soy acre when it is harvested (is a bug, worm etc any less important than one cow )? It's something I wrestle with when gardening as I know that when I dig, I most probably kill things and disrupt habitats. People need to chill a bit. The real question could be why do you need cosmetics? Is being make up free, not ponging of fragrance not acceptable?

Any recommendations for makeup for young Girls?

Another vote for Revolution. Their stuff tends to be very “on trend” with whatever the latest Instagram and YouTube influencers are up to, so I think it’s seen as affordable but still “cool” if my teens are anything to go by.
