For anyone interested the details of this cottage can be found here and as previously mentioned this is not a resort but a small family business. The reviews of the island itself suggest you can get meals at many of the restaurants for $4ish so not expensive at all.

Some info about the cottage and island from their website:

I guess it's weighing up how much food and drink you can consume in a week and if this is worth it. Personally AI for a week wouldn't pay for me I couldn't consume enough food to pay for it or alcohol. I did look at AI options and it was a minimum of £1100 and this was called something like Equator Village and wasn't a small atoll like the deal above it was on an atoll with an airport and an hour flight from Male and didn't look as appealing at all. I guess it's weighing up whether you need AI or not and if you do paying a few hundred pounds extra pp for it.

Good price and nice find OP, but if you are looking for the real … Good price and nice find OP, but if you are looking for the real Maldives what tv portraits it to be this is not the best resort to go to. HB is good value, but drink prices can be expensive even on non 5* resorts as they have to import the alcohol, and you cannot take alcohol into the Maldives even duty free.

if you're looking for the "real" Maldives, try staying a week in Male

it is a good deal, no denying that.I went to the Maldives for my 30th … it is a good deal, no denying that.I went to the Maldives for my 30th birthday, and it was amazing. would love to go back. but if your going to go the Maldives, do it properly. go all inclusive and chill out, not having worry about how much its going to cost while you are there. that's what the Maldives is all about. my twin centre 2 week all inclusive cost £3000 for 2 adults. 1 week on lily beach with sea plane transfers, 1 week on meeru with speed boat transfers. spent £100 over the all inclusive with doing a couple of excursions. and coming from Scotland, we took full advantage of the fortnight of free booze. this was a while ago now, thinking about going back for my 40th next year, and keep an eye on prices. you can still find a similar priced holiday now. when I was out there, they were talking about how the Maldives might not be there in 10yrs, due to sea level rising etc. but still there, will return one day.big fan of your deals btw, keep up the good work

Gotta agree we went last year and it's a place you don't do cheap.

We went to Niyama for a week and jumeirah dhevanfushi for a week, it's heaven on earth if you choose the right resort

YouDontWantToKnow

No you wouldnt & No it isnt

100% agree. You will be in for a shock if you booked this as you would be better of staying at home. Especially when knowing that all the other actual paradise islands are a boat ride or a sea plane away!

That's how I felt when we did a day trip to male from the airport - the knowing that paradise is just found the corner! And that was after actually spending two weeks in paradise! Sigh-i write this as I look out my kitchen window, watching the rain fall in darkness...sigh again
Why is it bad
Rubbish deal.
Trust me if you're going to the Maldives you do not want to be staying in Male. Okay for a day trip and not a day longer.

Hi, I sent you a private message.
rachelandgromit - did you have a chance to look for any deals for the South America? Unfortunately I can't find any for less than £800pp now so your help would be much appreciated, I intend to book this weekend. No problem if you are away and sorry for bothering you.

Cheers
DD96118
rachelandgromit,

After losing in negotiations with my wife we have now decided to spend 3 weeks in South America rather than the USA. We'll be flying in/out of Cusco, Peru and Rio, Brazil same dates (departing 13th August, returning 3rd September). We don't mind which city we fly into and can fly out of anywhere in Europe. If you can help that would be great, the best price I can find is GBP700 exc flights from UK to the relevant European city (another GBP200).

If you can help I would really appreciate it (when you are back). thanks!

Enjoy the drunk Australians.
Maldives is awesome, I'd take this deal just to get back there whilst you still can. Enjoy the islands before they are submerged under rising sea levels it is a serious concern for the Maldivian people. we've been 4 times and it never gets boring...but we like snorkelling and chilling out in total tranquility

Always check the quality of the coral before selecting an island, if most of the coral around the island resort is dead you won't get the rich variety of fish, rays, sharks and turtles you would on vibrant, live coral.
It's very safe as the only people there are staff. You can go on a trip to see how the locals live. It's our fav place and we've been to lots of Caribbean and South Pacific Islands. Although for some people it's very boring as there's not that much to do... Not for me though, I'm happy snorkelling all day

I'd recommend Biyadhoo wholeheartedly. beautiful island, incredible snorkelling and beaches which you can get for a brilliant price.

Resort is charming, but unfussy. Not 5 star and you're not waited on hand and foot but the food and drink is great and the staff are very freindly.

Went for our honeymoon and I'd go back in a heartbeat. We got two weeks all inclusive with all flights and transfers for £1089 each.
Isn't Maldives the same place where a female was publicly flogged after she was sexually abused/raped.
Thats a no go country for me - I do not want to be supporting the people who do this
Staying on Male island will destroy all the desert island fantasies you've dreamed of. I've been to the Maldives a few times and definitely would not want to go to Male. Do yourself a favour and save up more for a nice resort island.
What's on offer, is not worth the money.

Yup, we honeymooned on Meedhaparu for 10 nights all inclusive - the most incredible experience. Promised we would go back in ten years then kids came along and all we managed was a long weekend in the Algarve for our tenth!
Went Maldives last October, stayed on giraavaru at the centara ras fushi hotel. You pay for what you get. Water villas are naturally more expensive than beach villas. Check out the weather that time of year- think the south is a better part to go to ^^ where we went is in the north male atoll. Overall the holiday can be cheap if you don't want extravagance however going all that way, once in a while is worth spending the extra £ IMO....
We did Maldives for our honeymoon, was 7 years ago, we loved medifushi and lol I can't remember the posy one. The post gives us a brilliant idea t go back on our 10 year anniversary we went full board. It was too much think half would have been better.

*June/July 2015* 11 Nights in Maldives just £549 each !!

Reading that I thought each night good that later it was clarified with 'couple'...
Hi We went to the Maldives on 14 June this year & the weather was perfect, we had a couple of bursts of heavy rain but they are over & done within 1/2 hour & you are back to clear blue skies again, it was hot & sunny, about 35 degrees every day & not much cooler at night.
All the Maldive islands prohibit alcohol being taken in as it is a Muslim country however it is readily available in the resort bars & restaurants.
We were AI & didn't need to spend any money at all, we were on a different Island so cant comment on Picnic Inn specifically but would highly recommend the Maldives especially at this price as it cost us a whole load more than £1099

Exactly my comment regarding expecting the rest of the world to live by our standards when we (as in the Anglo Saxon heritage and English speaking world) are a minority. Stop being insensitive to the cultural norms of the rest of the world.

Women are 2nd class citizens.
Wonderful place, went for our honeymoon although another island. My only thing for us was the boat trip to the island we stayed at took 6 hours for the Maldives airport. WORST boat trip ever, never been on such rough seas, people crying around us, being sick everywhere and was freezing cold. Arrived at the island at midnight and felt like we had just filmed The perfect storm 2. I know we just were unlucky but that tainted the whole holiday knowing we had to make the trip back . Turned out beautiful though on return, lcuk of the draw I guess . I would recommend the sea plane if your island is a long way from the airport if your not a fan of boats.

Or be respectful and adhere to the local laws, customs and requirements of the country you are visiting or in this case, risk being thrown in jail.

This is a strict Muslim country. In some areas, women have to cover up, deal with it or fly to Spain instead.

Perhaps you are the one that should remove your head from your backside.

Still buyer discretion is advised.Given a comment about going to Maldives and not wearing swimwear, I believe we might be expecting the rest of the world to live by our cultural expectations. It was a last minute thing and that was the best I could find at short notice, thankfully it was very good:Positives:- Relatively small (when we went most guests spent time in the communal areas, so didn't see many people outside those areas, making it really feel like your own island sometimes).- Excellent food (and they do reasonably priced FB/AI packages. The cocktails on AI were poor IMO, so if you will be drinking those heavily consider AI gold. Personally I would just go FB/AI and pay for the one or two drinks we had in the evening). The ala carte restaurant was also reasonably priced (equivalent prices to high street chain restaurants).- Large shallow lagoon with rays and small reef sharks. Good for poor swimmers. Also given the orientation of the island one side appears to stay calm, even if the other is rough. Just inside the protection wall, by the beach bar, we saw a large turtle every day around 4 (give it a try if you go, I assume he's "resident" lol).- You can get to the other side of the reef in about 5-10 mins swim, where theres a large drop off and its teaming with life. We dove and snorkelled both sides. Inhabited island side (more on this in negatives) had several turtles, some very large eels, reef was probably prettier, but the sea was rougher when we went. The other side was absolutely calm, still a nice reef, saw some larger reef sharks, but no turtles this side. Lots of schools of fish/etc. - All the rooms appeared to be nice, well appointed. Beach bungalows aren't too densely packed (although it seemed empty when we were there, as everyone hung around the infinity pool). Water villas were large, well appointed with nice decks, although most of them the sea was too rough to swim comfortably off the decks.- Staff and service was very good, with some really nice communal areas and they had entertainment most evenings if you fancied some noise.- Seemed to attract a lot of repeaters and generally seemed to attract a nice type of guest (friendly, prepared to chat, but also knew when to leave you alone).Negatives:- One side has an inhabited island in view. Ask for the other side when booking (may not bother you, but I'd rather not find out it does when you're there), or a water villa facing the other side.- When we were there on some days the sea was quite rough on the inhabited side. However, from speaking to the repeaters, reading reviews, at least one side will be sheltered due to the orientation of the island (and adjacent islands). So when we went the side facing the inhabited island was rough (but had the turtles so we ventured out whenever possible), while the other side was completely calm (like a different island).- From reading forums, the reef is average, density of sea life is average and your unlikely to see large sharks/rays here. (Average against some other places in the Maldives, so still excellent compared to other places you've likely been). We were impressed, but we haven't been to some of the other places I've read people advise (yet :)) and also perhaps we were lucky when we went.- Theres a stone wall about 15-20m out to protect the island from erosion. Depending on tide, one side it will pretty much be submerged (meaning you can't really see it and get the picture perfect view), but the other you will see it poking out. May ruin it for some, but it does mean it keeps a reasonable beach and the lagoon within the wall is calm.My overall impression was the place is excellent and i'd happily return (although so many islands to try). Having read forums, TA, etc I get the impression the inhabited island on one side holds the price down, otherwise given the quality of service/food/island/reef/lagoon/density of rooms it would probably be priced higher (not that its particularly cheap).IMO the four factors to consider when choosing an island are: Food/Service, Reef/Dive sites/sea life/lagoon, Island/proximity of other islands, quality of island itself and how densely it is packed (in terms of rooms). From my research if you want to tick all four 100%, your easily looking at £1200+/night (HB if you're lucky), probably a lot more in peak season.Hope that helps

Thank you very much for the info. Maldives is on our shortlist for honeymoon, although my personal preference is for bora bora/French Polynesia. Drawback with FP over Maldives is flight time and cost. Although I've also heard snorkelling can be better in maldives(not that its bad in FP).
I have been to the maldives 15 times, so you might realise how much I like it. Local islands dont appeal to me apart from the price. My favourite island was fesdu [now W' retreat] so I wont be back there. I have found the main reason I like an island is the reef. Fancy rooms dont matter, I would much rather go to Biyadhoo or Embudu as islands like Vilamendhoo which is like a boutique hotel. I liked Angaga but the price is now too much for me as I will only go december - march which is high season as I am not going all that way for rain. The prices just get dearer and dearer with the usual arradan - chaaya islands
being the cheepest. I am on the internet most days looking for new sights to no avail. If anyone knows a good booking site
please let me know, i'd be glad to help with island choice.
Sit on a beach for 2 weeks,nah.
Wish I could drop everything and do this!

Where was the place you went to? With all the marine life. Which hotel?

The Island was called Komandoo, we went end of May (running into June) last year. It was a last minute thing and that was the best I could find at short notice, thankfully it was very good:
