Personally didn't enjoy my time in marrakech, I liked the hustle and bustle of the markets and seeing the square come alive at night, but the very hard sells in the markets were just the worse. I don't even look like the generic tourist but damn do they cling to you. 3 nights is probably long enough for marrakech, the locals in agadir however are far more chill and laid back.
Yes, I explained that yours was useful. Hence I know what an opinion is.

More an observation to be honest based on a trip there. Each to there own, my taste doesn’t necessarily dictate what others should do. It’s an opinion, you know what one of them is do you not?

There may be a lot of dishonest people, but it's not full of them. …There may be a lot of dishonest people, but it's not full of them. Generally you can't trust people there and shop keeper's are aggressive. There's a lot of pick pockets too. However the word full is an exaggeration. It's definitely not a dump. There's plenty of dumps in England too and plenty of dishonest pepper too. Marrakesh has the world oldest university... Older than Oxford and Cambridge, and Al azr. Dumps don't tend to have that..

I'd go one further and say do not trust ANYONE but yourselves when on holiday there. Believe me no one is your friend. Everything was a scam or a con. Even the hotel concierge was at it!! Selling you trips with his mates. We got to the airport after agreeing a fee only to be told its double. I gave him what we originally agreed and walked off. Trips would always end up with stopping past many shops selling tat where they are extremely nice to you (cups of tea etc) before they hit you with an extremely aggessive sales pitch so you feel compelled to buy something and won't let you leave.

Of course when you don't buy something? Yep you guessed it, you see the real them and you revert back to being the scum of the earth to them.

There are some great places to stay with very good reviews on AIRbnb from £12 a night, I'm very tempted, thanks op.
Went to Marrakech for a week in February and loved it. Would definitely recommend it. Stayed at Riad Zayane which was incredibly lovely and excellent value. The staff were absolutely wonderful.
Thanks!
I was there two weeks ago. If you only have hand luggage don't bother with the airport express bus to the centre. Get the number 11 for 28p (4 dirhams) each way a few minutes walk from the airport entrance.

I stayed in Riad Sahara Nour in Marrakech. Quite hard to find due to Google maps being inaccurate and leading to a street that was blocked at one end.

Ask shop keepers in the medina if you get lost as they won't hassle you for money for directions.

Essouira is nice on the Atlantic coast. Game of Thrones fans will know it from season 3. I got a CTM bus for 60 dirhams rtn from Marrakech to there. You can book online if you have good French or Arabic. And use your printout to collect your tickets at the bus station.

Loved it there.

+1, much preferred Agadir...far more relaxed.
I went to Marrakech on my own. It's a great value destination and the food is great too.
Went just before Christmas and really enjoyed it, people are really friendly, prices are cheap and there's certainly plenty to see. TBH I found the city itself a bit tacky - a lot of the stalls in the Souks are selling exactly the same Chinesse tat you see on markets in the UK but make the effort to go to the lesser known bits, like the stalls doing metalwork, and it's amazing the genuine craftsmanship you see them using right in front of you.

I've been to Morroco a few times over the years. It's always been one of the most relaxed Muslim countries and still is. The big touristy cities like Agadir, Marrakech, Tangier and Fes are swarming with police and guards who are all pretty switched on. The country revolves around tourism in these areas and is far less strict than some of the countries further east.

The only thing to look out for are the constant scams (especially in Marrakech - assume every conversation is a scam, it usually is) and the men can get a bit attached to western woman.

I was in Marrakech for Ramadan last year and everything was fine. The hotels still served alcohol and the shops / restaurants were still open as normal. Even on eid itself. Much the same as you will find in any predominantly Muslim areas in England. Don't let it put you of going at this time of year, it will be fine. The biggest problem is the heat. Is this deal still on? I'm not really good with booking holidays so I ain't sure whether the deal is still valid or not. Thanks in advance!
I've been 3 times now and loved every visit. I've stayed for 2 weeks before and there is plenty to do. We hired a taxi for a day and drove up into the Atlas mountains. There are a few historical sites to visit which we found via buying the Lonely Planet guide before we went and all within the medina so easily reachable.

I've stayed in both a Riad in the Medina and also a 4* hotel in the new town.

Also if you wish to drink alcohol, there is a supermarket which sells it (to foreign tourists only) which we went to by taxi. On the negative side the locals hang out outside it and try everything to get you to buy them alcohol, don't as it's not allowed.
twenty three pounds is about twice what a taxi would be. prices are fixed to the main square or other areas. buses are plentiful and really cheap too.
12 nights is far too long in my opinion

Where's stanstead?
I was going to book this until I read the Tripadvisor reviews on Riad SACR. Although there were decent reviews of the owners, these two comments in particular (on top some of the comments here about Marrakesh generally) put me off:

"It is not as advertised. There is no bar, no restaurant, no complimentary transport from the airport, no spa, etc... There was very little (5 minutes) of hot water for my shower. There are no locks on the doors to the rooms and no safes either. "

And from a senior reviewer:

"Booked this based on the reviews and the description, Bar , restaurant, steam room , terrace NONE of which existed. No door locks which could be of concern, to get in you need to ring the front doorbell so as the bolts can be thrown and the door opened, not so good if you are sleeping and someone wants to come in.
You will NOT find this place without a guide, even if you use the taxi transfer as this drops you off outside of the medina walls. The staff were really helpful however I should have preferred the website description to much the reality."
I would say don't stay near the medina the hassle you get is inbelievable we stayed at the Kenzi Menara palace about 10 mins drive from the centre hotel was lush just do a trip in to the centre there's an aqua park hotel not far from there too which looked good to stay in if you are taking little ones. We were also warned about eating food in the square only for those with strong stomachs I think!
thanks stace!!!
