I could never get it right with a mitre box so used one of these and it was pretty easy (plus some liberal application of filler)

Yes, they have changed it. The blade size last night said 255mm / 25.4mm and I agree on the rpm. Would possibly be ok for aluminium but for steel a definite no no.

Regarding the Evolution mitre saws:
- Fury is entry level, Rage is slightly better (but not quite pro)
- In the Rage range, there are 4 mitre saws: the 3S and 3S300 use a small 215mm blade (the 3S300 has can make straight cut with a with of up to 300mm, the 3S is limited to 210mm); the Rage3 is the next model up (254mm blade, which can cut deeper pieces of wood up to 300mm width). The 3DB is similar to the 3, but with a double bevel cutting feature and the ability to cut some slightly larger pieces of wood
- the 'Plus' denomination means that some accessories (dust chute, marginally better blade with more teeth, etc.) are included.
- most seem to be available in 110V for use with a site generator/transformer or 230V (for home use)

More details can be found at http://www.evolutionpowertools.com/uk/build/mitresaws/

The best prices seem to be on Amazon (which sell the Plus version for the price of the standard versions elsewhere, although check voltages to avoid any mistake).

In the hunt for a mitre saw. I see there are quite a few different evolutions in the market. Anyone with any experience tell me the differences in the 3s + - etc? And is the bog standard one at £100 good enuf compared to the more expensive versions.
parsimony

I've also had a Rage for a few years and can thoroughly recommend it.

Me too, although divorce sorted mine out without any sort of rage therapy.
I was looking for a mitre saw recently but they all seem much the same "quality".I have a rough old b&q one already and wanted something nicer to use. Ended up buying a used old elektra beckum for £95 - very nice in comparison.

I think they are all pretty similar with what they fit. Mine fits up to 14 inches (distance between front to back holes) and up to 30 inches (left to right holes). So as long as your feet fall with those dimensions, you should be OK.

I'm looking at the Evolution as a DIYer who doesn't want to spend hundreds, have to have multiple tools or blades and just occasionally wants to cut some materials for a small home project. I agree for professional carpenters and trades the evolution probably isn't suitable.
The more teeth you have the better the cut will be. I haven't used an Evolution saw in over 10 years and don't even know if they make a 48t blade but if they did you will find it's a better cut than the 20t or 24t.
well that blade tore up the surface of the laminate flooring I was fitting, it also tears paint off the surface of painted wood. the Bosch mitre saw with a 48t blade did not do this

There would be little point in buying the Evolution if you were going to change it's blade as you may as well just go and buy another brand. Evolution made it's name years ago by it's revolutionary blade that would cut steel up to 6mm thick as well as aluminium and wood. I bought one for our engineering works in a about 2002. You don't want to know how much they cost back then. It's my guess they made the bore different not so you could put other manufacturer's blades on their machines, more likely to stop people putting Evolution blades on their own chop, mitre and circular saws. I think I know what you mean though about the blade in that if you want to use it for cutting wood, get rid of the evolution blade and put a wood blade in for a better cut.

I work for a joinery company now and we have mainly Makita compound mitre saws. I absolutely hate the Makitas. I have just a cheap unbranded one at home but it's looked after, has a decent blade in it and I can get as good a cut with it and if I had a choice of taking one of the works Makita's home or using my cheap B & Q one I would pick mine every time. I just done some 7" skirting at my daughter's house which it cut perfectly. Sometimes buying cheap can produce the same or better results and I would have no hesitation in buying a cheaper saw again. You just need to know what to look for and how to set them up.

No worries. I thought you was using door frame section for skirting lol at 63mm. You did mention skirting in your post.

I nearly made the mistake of buying a brand new saw thinking my present sliding mitre saw wouldn't do 45 degree mitres but it works a treat. It wasn't expensive and is fully adjustable so can check it cuts at 90 degrees. Not a bad idea for all you guys out there to check the blade is square and adjust as necessary each time you use the saw as the small need which points to zero is daily disturbed.
I bought this last year, cost about £125 I think. Superb accurate cut.
Used it for laminate flooring, skirting and architrave etc. Excellent tool.
looks decent, only just bought a non sliding draper from the toolstation, does the job just barely but for 75 quid

I read that review, but he'd used it once ages ago then just got it out his shed and started using it. I would have at least prepped it or checked for rust on the blade or something. I can't imagine this being a normal thing, but that long of non-use must do something to the mech.
Some of the reviews sound a bit worrying. The one about the plastic guard shattering while in use and causing deep lacerations to the users hand put me off to be honest. And i appreciate time machines are a bit rare, but this was cheaper in February 2016 at £109.41.
Might be ok but I've had a cheapo mitre saw similar to this (but not the same brand) and it never cuts accurately at any angle let alone trying to do something like 45degree corners. It's a fair price but having been caught out with cheaper tools in the past I'd spend some more money, probably £200 and get the Dewalt from screwfix... but that is nearly twice the price of course.
