Did you read the story you linked to you mooncalf? Police offering some free doorbells that help catch criminals. Unless you are accusing everyone on here of being a criminal, how is it being used against us?

TKDBlackbelt

That doesn't make up unsubstantiated rubbish and follow a life of paranoia about 'somebody' watching my movements outside of my door ? Yeah I am one of those people I'm afraid. I'm not as enlightened as you I'm afraid.

Ah awesome. The clock one is great. I would be constantly asking alexa the time, saves me some hassle - talk about first world problems (embarrassed)

lxx

It was bad, hopefully the door view one don’t have the problem. I’ve bought an Amazon echo dot with clock (excited)

1qw

Ah man that's really bad. You think for £130-£200 doorbell they would have better service. And you can always get an alexa flex at a later date if needed to announce someone's at the door.

That’s what I got from the Ring 2 (annoyed)

I have used mine for 2 whole days, battery was fully charged its now down to 98% so fine for me, RSSI is showing as 61. I got over 20 notifications yesterday. I found it really easy to install, had an issue connecting the doorbell to the wifi network, but was able to fix with a phone restart and pressing the orange rest button on the doorbell.

lxx

Kind of losing faith, surprised to know that an one week old doorbell had to be replaced, hopefully they are not sending me a refurbished one.

I understand. But the peephole feels like a better product, and I hope it is, as I've had my issues with the Ring v1 (but I know that others haven't)

Yes it is! Good reach on 5ghz channels too. 8 lan ports, usb c, quad core processor! WiFi 6 etc lol

LGB87

As a cheaper solution I’d recommend getting a good wireless access point or mesh system if needed and turning the WiFi off on the SuperHub so it’s still doing the routing. This has fixed all my issues with the SuperHub.

gav53

Thanks so much for this, really appreciate it! :)

Mentos

Just to elaborate: 1) The issue with battery powered is the door bell needs to wake up, connect to your wifi and then send the alert. Hence YMMV depending on your router, wifi signal at the door (where the doorbell is installed). And worse still, it might work, then a neighbour gets a new router which introduces congestion/interference and your doorbell stops working :/ Best to get a wired doorbell if at all possible. 2) Motion detection based on changes in the image is inherently problematic. Shadows, plants moving, etc will trigger it. It's fine for recording activity and viewing later, but you'll soon turn alerts off. 3) If you're using this as standalone one or two device system its pretty good value, even with the subscription. If you're looking to setup a CCTV system to cover your property you're probably better off investing in decent CCTV cameras. Unless the subject is close to the camera, HD doesn't provide enough resolution to be much use identifying someone that only takes up ~20% of the frame. 4) If I was doing my CCTV system again today, i'd pickup some 6-8MP cameras. Use a PIR/Heat Sensor to trigger them. And push to NAS with ability to upload to something like dropbox free (or in my case OneDrive, since I have 6 x 1TB which came with office 365 sub). That will be cheaper then going for a full on Nest/Ring system and yield some decent footage with very reliable alerts. I can see the point in the doorbells and/or cameras if youre just going for one or two. But beyond that, best to go with option 4 IMO.

The other issue where it takes itself offline possibly could be that the ring doorbell goes to sleep when there is no motion, but as soon as it detects motion and records there is a delay which could explain it if it only connects when there is detection, abit like wake on lan.

Pezza2u

Fast roaming was disabled by default. I had read about that feature bricking some doorbells! Seemed to be the 2 version. I've also disabled mesh technology for the doorbell so it shouldn't switch between them. I think I need to have a play around with where they are positioned too. I've noticed that moving it from the shelf where the hub is to the floor next to it improves the signal.

mastermjr20041

For your deco issue, I would advise removing it from roaming if you have this feature enabled.

Pezza2u

I fitted mine and also bought a Deco M5 mesh system at the same time as I knew the hub I have wouldn't be enough. Has anyone had issues? I'm getting a signal of between 50-60, even with an M5 disc 8ft away. It seems to start recording when someone gets to the door rather than when they first start walking up the driveway. I'm still experimenting with the settings though. Something else I've noticed is the Deco seems to take the doorbell offline when it's finished recording. The doorbell itself doesn't show as offline in the Ring app, only on the Deco. If it detects motion or I go to live view it wakes up but I think this might be causing the issue with not capturing people until they're at the door. Any one else have this problem?

Someboy

It happened after about 18 months. It could have been earlier but I don't ever use the doorbell so I was only made aware by the post man. It's not unusable. I contacted Ring but they only offered a discount on a new product. I've read that someone has uploaded the design for replacement buttons to be 3D printed. I've not explored that but with my personal experience of Ring I'm keen to give Eufy or Nest a try for comparison.

Ring Door View this thread refers to is still showing £119 for me too. If you mean the Ring Pro then yes I noticed it looks like it has jumped up to £199 on JL and seems to have disappeared at Argos for now. Glad I got it at £157. It'll likely be reduced again somewhere before long though.

lxx

Still £119 for me.

Blacklodge

£199 now?

P1119

You're right,it had been at £129 briefly with ring when I first started looking at them but then jumped back to £179. So £119 from John Lewis is excellent. I liked the fact that door view is mostly inside so harder to steal too, as you say. I did read though that if your Ring doorbell is stolen Ring will replace it free as long as you get a crime reference number from police.

lxx

Thank you for your comment. Pro is certainly a better option if hardwiring is not a problem. I was waiting for the Door View Cam to go down in price as hardwiring is mission impossible for me and the Door View Cam is unlikely to be stolen. Most retailers were selling it for £159 last month as far as I remember, therefore I think £119 is a good price and John Lewis is a decent retailer.

Im waiting for a doorbell cam that can give me notifications to a digital watch that has access to the camera on, rather than a phone or tablet as I would panic too much and drop my phone more often and would find it easier and quicker to access with a watch.

Fair complaint, before you wake up in the morning you have to earn 6.8p for your doorbell. If your house is worth protecting then fair enough, far cheaper then alternative security systems :P

Not hacks. They're sharing your data in very very questionable ways.

andymg2000

Maybe just protect yourself and turn on two factor authentication. So called ‘hacks’ from what I’ve read were people who used the same password on multiple sites (any of which could have been compromised) and they didn’t have two factor enabled for ring. If they had it enabled it would have stopped anyone logging in simply by having the credentials. Ring didn’t support this until mid last year, but that’s irrelevant for anyone buying now. Are you aware of reports where it was suggested people’s accounts were hacked in some other way?

exactly, do a search regarding security, not only do various people have access, they appear to also give access to law enforcement via backdoor, I rather not be spied upon Sonos and yale had similar products, which are big companies and yet they have dud products as server support has been withdrawn. I am all for internet connected products but prefer to keep the server/storage side local and have internet access to the product even if that means paying a subscription but a subscription for limited access is also annoying and at a tangent. Issue is, that product support is limited especially as there is no agreed universal open standard

mikeszabo20

They’re owned by Amazon :{

OperateOnMe

concerns are security and after market server support -if the company gets taken over or it has runs its cycle, server support disappears and you are left with an expensive doorbell - that is only if you also buy the chime

The price is driven by other companies too and if AO, Argos and so on would have not got this product at £129, probably amazon price would have been higher. So competition is good. I do agree at the moment this is better to get it from Amazon as same price, but voting cold is a bit harsh IMO. Plus some of Amazon products are unavailable before Christmas so good others have the product for now. My point is one of the reasons Amazon lower its prices is because they price match the competition. And the other way around. To me this is a good deal.

You are overlooking that these are consumer products, so not everybody is as savvy as you might be. You can bet that if they made 2FA the default that people would start complaining.

jaypr

Yes they absolutely could, but then stupid people would take to twitter and create some kind of online petition because Amazon has infringed on their rights to personal choice to choose to switch these features on for themselves. The current Ring devices are perfectly secure and Ring are very good at keeping the firmware and security patches up to date. Ultimately people should take personal responsibility for securing their devices properly.

Salazaar

So Amazon couldn't possibly introduce mandatory 2FA, limited password retries, remote log outs etc? Couldn't possibly do any of that despite running more online services than anyone else on earth...? Whatever. You're either an Amazon shill or deluded.

jaypr

Yes, that’s exactly what it means. These are 100% satisfactorily secure to those that configure them probably and use the security features available on them along with a solid password. All of those things are firmly in the users controls and if they choose not to use them, that’s on them and there is nothing Amazon can do about it.

Salazaar

That's true of most things, still doesn't mean Amazon couldn't make the baseline security of these devices a lot better.
