Only going for 2.5 days, was looking at Athens but it's costing around £700-725 from 2nd to 5th November.

Let me know what you like to do (ie nice beach, historic sites, hiking, .....) and if you've got your own transport and I'll give you a few suggestions.
Not much to do or see in the Corinthos / Loutraki area specially at this time of year. In fact its quite dead apart from seeing the canal and ancient Corinthos

It is as beautiful (if not more) than many of the islands, yet part of the mainland. Got its own regional airport, but also excellent road from Athens. Best of all, prices are a fraction of what you see in places like Santorini

And don't spend lots of time in tourist trap Oia - see a caldera and gorgeous sunset from Firostefani.

Santorini certainly isn't about nightclubs (maybe that was aimed at Mykonos?) - I stayed in Perissa where this is aimed at and while there are bars, the promenade was predominantly restaurants and cafes, with the beach and sun loungers directly opposite. It is also a much cheaper part of the island (some parts are fairly overpriced).

Perissa is a great location to hire a quad from (roads are generally quieter down south, plus a great way to explore the bottom half of the island for around €30 a day), then you just get the bus up to Fira (capital), plus another bus up to Oia (tourist trap / where all the sunset photos come from).

Can highly recommend the Panorama restaurant in the southern part of the island - meal for two overlooking the sunset is more like €40 rather than €100 as you get in Fira and Oia - good destination on the quad bike.

Overall this seems like a stellar deal for the week in Perissa alone. Voted hot.

Any recommendations on which area to stay in Crete? Not looking to hire a car... somewhere peaceful, good sandy beach nearby but also a town/village with some tavernas/restaurants within walking distance. Good bus connections for day trips would be nice too. Don't want any sort of lively nightlife as have kids.

Kalyves is a quiet resort we stayed there in June. Most of the tavernas are on the beaches front so you can eat whilst kids play in sand. Also lovely beaches a couple miles west of chania which have very shallow bays and calm water.

if you do this and go to Naxos you have to go to the island of Koufonisi - amazing. also hire a car on Naxos and visit the south of the island. deserted beaches and pine tree fringes even in the height of summer.

Great work how much would it be as a solo adventure rach

well the ferry prices would be half the cost as would the flights. Accommodation is the tricky one as it may well be the same price if they haven't got single rooms and you are effectively paying the same price for 1 person as you are for two. Worth just amending the no of persons in each hotel and seeing if it is cheaper.

When I booked my hotel in Amsterdam last year I followed it up with an email message to the hotel directly to check they've got my booking. Always a good option if you have worries. They were at least £20 cheaper a night for my Amsterdam hotel.

Yes that's a good idea. My main concern were the comments regarding lack of response from the company which raises the concern of what you would do in the situation where the hotel has no record of your booking and you are unable to contact Amoma.

Sounds like a great trip to me if I didn't have kids I would be up for it reminds of the greeknisland hoping I did back in the 80/90s
I did a similar trip 30 years ago. We just got return tickets to Athens and made the rest up as we went along - do not advise this though as we did end up sleeping on the floor most of the time! I have travelled the world but still rate this trip as one of the best things I've ever done.

Not true - have been many of the Cyclades breached...

Yes but on very sporadic occasions not enough to ruin a holiday. I would wager a guess that there have been less number of days spent on these islands by migrants in the Cyclades , than in any other European country by percentage of population in that country in relation to that of the population of the Cyclades . Which basically means no effect to your holiday

Was in Santorini last year. Stayed at Kastro Suites in Thira and loved it. However, make sure you hire your own car. We did this, and found it was by far the best way to see the sights. The problem with the coach trips is that they are poorly timetabled, so six or seven coachloads of tourists from Germany, Russia, France, the UK, the US, Spain and Italy turn up to these tiny wee tourist spots all at the same time. It's not a big island, so it gets horribly crowded if you're dependent upon coach/bus timetables.

If you do hire your own car, make sure you take a trip to Profitis Ilias Monastery for the best view on the island. However, the sunset over the caldera is best enjoyed from the roof terrace of Franco's Cafe in Pyrgos, whilst sipping on a home-pressed lemonade..
