I bought a phone advertised on HotUKDeals for Geekbuying. Here's my experience- I havent even said anything about DHL charging me £25 tax before delivery can be made.

What I have emailed Paypal:

I am totally unhappy with the way I have been treated. Geekbuying sold me a totally faulty phone 2 months ago - that I haven't used - it gives me 2 bars - I live 200M from a signal mast. I get no signal after 300M from the signal mast. I cannot use the phone on any travel.
I have now bought myself a new phone - use the same SIM car from the same network and I get full 4G. I can use the phone wherever I travel.
I have been asked by Geekbuying to "send videos" and "photos". For less than £100 - they want me to jump thorugh hoops and waste even more of my time - it's been 2 months.
WHEN THEY DO REPLY, THEY REPLY 1 WEEK TO 10 DAYS LATER!!!
After sending them the video, they have said that there is no problem - as the phone made a phone call - they have ignored that it only shows 2 bars of phone coverage. I AM NOT GOING TO GO AROUND THE COUNTRY VIDEOING THE PHONES FAILURES AND COMPARING THEM. THIS IS NOT MY JOB - IT IS THE PHONES FAULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WANT MY MONEY BACK, MY ACCOUNT CLOSED AND ALL MY DETAILS DELETED BY GEEKBUYING!!!!

My undergraduate degree is in Psychology, and yes, it is one of the less …My undergraduate degree is in Psychology, and yes, it is one of the less demanding subjects when it comes to IT requirements at undergraduate level. On the other hand, SPSS may run on fairly low specs, but it is woefully optimised, meaning that once you have any reasonably sized dataset running an analysis, it can challenge lower spec machines. These days, most psychology undergraduates will have that open with e-prime, perhaps citation software like mendeley and so on. The main thing to consider will be the CPU/RAM/Storage. If you go with an i5/SSD combination, you can get by on 4GB RAM quite easily, but 8GB would be better for a primary machine. The integrated graphics on any modern core CPU will be more than good enough.BUTThe one thing you'll want is a good display which means FHD minimum and of good quality. This is overlooked time and again, despite being the main thing you look at when you're working. A good keyboard is also incredibly important, given that psychology involves a LOT of essay and report writing. My mobile computing solution is the 2017 SP i5/128GB/4GB and it can run with NVivo, SPSS, Mendeley, Word, OneNote all open and in use without a hiccup.Hope your daughter enjoys Psych BTW.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply, I realise I sent slightly off topic but you still replied with good, indepth, well explained advice. Thank you.
A biut iffy buying outside of the UK, for me anyway. I'd want to put Ubuntu on one of these.
Great price - went for the 3 pro model to get the IPS screen - slightly more and a smaller screen but it should be worth it (hoping I get the v4 model that solves the power lock bios and touchpad issues)

Revelation is a cheaper alternative sub brand of antler, hence the low rrp. I bought a revelation once thinking they were the same, the quality was far inferior to antler. They look similar in photos though and antler don’t make it clear at all which is just odd and i think damages their main brand

I have this Antler Saturn case... it's a flexible hard shell case... it's not like one of those bullet proof Samsonite jobs.
Very pleased with it and has the advantage of coming from a well known manufacturer, so it should last. Only concern is that it's a zip-only fastening... personally I prefer the peace of mind of having securing straps as well.

Flashing stops it working with the app, but that is kind of the whole point, so the Alexa skill won't work anymore. No need to solder anything if you don't want to, I flashed all mine just wedging the pins in the holes.

Tasmota tends to be the weapon of choice nowadays and can be used with any of the usual suspects like home assistant etc but also can emulate a wemo or hue hub so can be picked up and switched using an Echo directly. Don't know about Google as their home automation is very average compared to Alexa so I don't bother with it.

The official tasmota site will tell you more than you'll ever want to know about it and just search on YouTube for dozens of tutorials but just be aware, like anything, it can be out of date literally overnight so check carefully before committing.

Been running three of these for 6 months - Superb bit of kit, just don't use the awful firmware it comes with as it's list of permissions are best avoided. Solder on some pins to the board and then install one of the many, many alternative firmwares out there. Espurna is the best I have used and they have not needed restarting. You will need the 3.3v serial USB tool & soldering experience.

The button on them is very weak. Once it breaks (it will) it will still work but you won't be able to reset it / upload new firmware.

Thanks for the detailed info, will have a look into this. Although my …Thanks for the detailed info, will have a look into this. Although my initial impression is that this is beyond my skillset!

If soldering is the problem, it would probably be possible to connect to the sonoff programming header by poking breadboard dupont wires with pins on through the holes and using your thumb to press them against the side of the holes - just make sure the 3.3v usb to serial adaptor you buy comes with its header pre-soldered (the one I've got doesn't).(You don't connect the sonoff to the mains while programming, it is powered only by the 3.3volt connection, so would be safe).

There is also a hack that works via wifi but only with older non-updated firmware, and I'm not sure if the software is easily modifiable to install other peoples firmwares (I believe it works by redirecting the sonoff to an OTA update server it runs on your PC):- github.com/mir…OTA

Just to add to this, going by Geekbench scores - the top opencl score for a Frontier Edition is 185k. In this enclosure, mine benches at 179k.

Don't have a monitor connected, it's purely for compute - so if you're not sending display information back and forward, the performance hit is a lot lower.

You could probably build a GPU Less pc for well under £200 quid
Wow, I did not know something like this even existed!
I have a 1060m in my laptop and it runs everything I need on high atm but this would be great if I want to use a better card in the future!
I do not really need it right now but hopefuly in a year or 2 when I do need it they will be even cheaper
I'm rather incredulous at some of the prices of the alternatives to this product quoted in this thread.
I'd like to see a sff case, quality psu and thunderbolt to pcie x16 adapter, rated for graphics card throughput, from a UK supplier, new for £99.
Likewise, a gaming pc for £199 which doesn't rely on luck on eBay, and unrealistic prices from components.

That said, £199 is still a bit steep for me.

As regards why people would use something like this, I have an egpu (geforce 750ti on an express card GDC beast V8) connected to a x220 tablet which sits on a dock.
When docked, it is connected to 2 monitors, happily plays modernish games even though it's only a second gen i5, and the tablet screen is still available to use with the pen for scribbles. I can undock and take the laptop with me if needs be to use it elsewhere.
When there's a suitable stylus enabled surface type laptop which has an egpu solution, I'll update to that.
I paid £40 for my GDC beast, £30 for a 120w 12v fanless brick psu. I don't bother with a case for my setup. Plenty stable as it is.

(Edit: accidentally hit send before I'd finished.)
