The creator Yu Suzuki admitted he isn't a gamer, so he won't have seen how things have evolved in the last 20 years. He's a bit of an odd character and should have probably had more people controlling the direction of the creative process. “To be honest I don't play many other games,” confides Suzuki before dinner. “If you say you like Chinese food, you probably mean that you like to eat Chinese food, but what I like is the cooking of the food, not the eating. In most cases in the gaming industry, the guys who create the games also like playing games. But in my case, I really just love to create, so the way I develop is very different from ordinary game developers.”
I played the first 2 on Dreamcast. Still have them. Three was a let down. Says it all really. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7SVY9CyBBc
I just hope they can make more, and actually update everything about the game. Shenmue 3 was a bit of a failure as it didn't really sell much to make the parent company happy. The main production team were apparently happy though. I'm still waiting for all the tat I paid so much for via Kickstarter...
Before I played it, I was totally happy for it to be the same as the old games, I've got so many good memories of the first 2 and another was just a bonus. Mechanics was the word I was searching for earlier, you're totally right. Doesn't feel updated in any way, lol.
Unfortunately it's exactly what they were going for! It's genuinely made for the old fans, not to grab a new audience. I've got mixed feelings, the script is just as clumsy as before and the mechanics are too. But I'm still enjoying it! I don't have free time so it's taking me ages to play **Not likely to happen but they did say they would revamp part 4 when they make it... Game style and mechanics etc.
