Vanessa Mae. Sounds good. Very hot. And definitely younger than 100

No arguments there

A skilled violinist can make the most awful piece of junk sound good anyway. It's good incentive to practise

£48 for a violin + case seems good price to me! Includes free delivery :)
Alex Ferguson just bought the last 12.
Solid Maple! Surely it's going to be heavy and have a very poor tone or is meant to be plugged into an amp maan, like Nigel Kennedy?
Many decent violin teachers will loan children a violin to test out their aptitude and interest for a term or so - saving their parents a financial commitment if the child hates it.
WOT

No horse jokes
I don't see why they're including a case with this. Surely this is only fit for decorative purposes (that is if you like that kind of decor) and for such purpose the case is of little use.

Perhaps not for a 27 month old (didn't know you were looking for a child quite that young!), I would have thought by 36 months you could seriously start thinking about it though. I mean that comment with a lot of love, small kids are amazingly clever and it's one of those things the earlier you start the easier it is.

As I said, it's only an opinion but it's one based on experience.
I do agree with your opinion on the cornet, but buying a cheap cornet is basically throwing your money away, and many brass bands have instruments to lend, so you're better, IMO, to buy a cheap trumpet to learn the basics on.

Well here's my 2 cents; As an experienced brass musician in the champ … Well here's my 2 cents; As an experienced brass musician in the champ section I teach my students on these and have one at home for tootling round on. Flugels my first instrument (a phat boi incase you were wondering) and I think these trumpets offer really good value for money, they're alright for tuning and the tones not too bad. When you consider the cost of renting an instrument these days and if you're not sure if your child will keep up their new hobby then you shouldn't be spending a fortune, and if you take one of these to your local cash converters then you can make the majority of your money back.Obviously for professionals they're not so hot, but if your kid wants to learn I would suggest this is a good way in. The only thing I would suggest is that you replace the mouthpiece for something that suits the child best, you can go to any decent music shop and give them a go, it will set you back around £20 - £30 for a half decent one but can make all the difference.HTH

slash`s 1st guitar was old and battered it only had 2 strings for a while but didn`t put him off.. You need to be determined to learn 1st or you`ll just give up no matter how good the instrument
I think it is easier to make a good cheap electric guitar than an a good cheap acoustic, violin, or brass instrument. By virtue of the fact that it is electric and solid body, things like wood quality and construction are not as quite as important. I was pretty chuffed with the £26 ebuyer electric but wouldn't buy an acoustic or violin or brass instrument without seeing it first.

There are certainly some decent acoustic guitars around for £50 and I think it is worth paying a bit more to get a decent starter instrument.

My pleasure... there are plenty of other hirers out there besides Sheehan's so shop around.
A good quality instrument can really motivate a young player... and also the parents :-D
Hi musicals

Thanks for that. My boy hires his Cello from school. It's kind of old and musty, but is obviously better quality than the kind of Chinese import you'd get from Gear4Music. He won't be able to take both instruments at school, so I was hoping to pick one up for him to play on, but hiring, from somewhere like Sheehan's seems to be a much better prospect tbh.

Thanks for that! repped.
Hi thekanester, of course.
Your best bet is to get your child measured - or ask your violin teacher for their recommendation. Then, armed with this recommendation, I'd hire an instrument, not buy one. Your child will probably be ready to move up to the next size after less than a year, so why waste the money buying it? Footes - footesmusic.com/pro…327 - used to do this, you could also try Sheehan's - sheehans.com/vio…tal. PM me for more - happy to help.
Out of interest, Muscals, what would you suggest for a decent child violin.

My son does cello and piano, and I've been looking at violins lately. Would you be able to suggest something cheapish?
Yukkety yuk

We are all agreed then, cheap violins are useless.

If you want ultra cheap music tuition for your kids, especially now that many local authorities do not have the facilities they used to have, there are Brass bands all around the country offering free or nominal cost tuition, and often free use of instruments too. Like football clubs, this is one major way that bands plan for their future, train from ground level up.

Brass instruments (and probably single reed instruments too) are good in one particular way, they have an easier or shallower "learning curve" in the initial stages (but JUST as hard to be a master!) than many other instruments, and come in several sizes, to suit the kid!

If this is not going to be "for" them, then it is a cheap way to find out.

As someone who played Viola at school, I never found my musical niche until I gave it up, took up brass, and still play more than 35 years after those days, including a limited amount of orchestral playing too in the past - it isn't just an avenue to playing in brass bands only!
The deal is good but this is an awful violin. Likely to put a lot more people off than it would encourage.
I'm a violin teacher and I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. I advise all my students to rent their violins - works out a lot cheaper in the long run as children go through different sizes very quickly.
voted hot because it is a good price BUT bear in mind that you will have to find/pay for it to be strung and tuned and as its a new instrument it will most probably sound awful til its broken in! Take it from me- you get what you pay for with violins! With a son who played Viola and a daughter who plays violin I know what I am tlking about!!!:w00t::w00t:
