Need a pc for work (I'm only answering emails/book keeping!) but would like to be able to upgrade later for gaming (when prices drop). Is this a good option for me? I haven't taken the plunge and bought any components yet so any recommended compatible parts would be helpful!

You can't go wrong with choosing AMD's AM4 platform, as AM4 motherboards (which are comparatively cheaper than Intel's) are compatible with this or any of AMD's Ryzen CPUs, including Ryzen+ 2000-series coming in April, and will last a gen even after that at least. So once you plumb for AM4, it's a question of whether you want to go super cheap but performant and then upgrade to a new CPU or GPU later with the 2200G, or spend quite a lot more money on a separate CPU (Ryzen 1600) along with a dGPU to go with it (cheaper options like RX 560 or GTX 1050 Ti) which have quite a bit more performance and will be ok to get by 1080p gaming at lower settings.
Surely anyone serious about playing 1080p games on high/ultra settings knows that a £89 APU isn't going to cut it. What does make sense is the AM4 motherboard taking all the ryzen 3,5 and 7 processors. So perhaps this would be a good stepping stone to building a lower end PC.

Gaming and this CPU do not make sense... unless you plan to play faster than light, dont say this is good for gaming, its not and never will be... the PS4 has more grunt and will be better for gaming.

Graphics card. But with the current inflated mining prices it would have to be something low end like a GT 1030 or GTX 750 Ti. Still not sure I want to spend about £50 and find out it might not work though!

yeah dual core motherboards will push the price up but again depends on the socket, I got my 2011-v3 in the £440 region.

The board mentioned in this post could be had for around £300, techspot.com/rev…pc/

So yes dual will be more but the machine posted isn't dual so could still be built for cheapish.

These are OK but the legs use a very brittle plastic, when I was folding mine up the legs use a kind of "lever/fulcrum" system to pack the table together. Something was obviously not aligned right inside so the force on the top bit of the leg ended up snapping it off!

Whole table rendered useless. Luckily it was under warranty and Screwfix replaced it, but it's obviously a known fault as I noticed the replacement had bright yellow warning tape on it saying "Don't use the legs to open the table".

Also it is a faff to open and close, there's not much tolerance.

It is very portable and very good at the functions it is limited to but … It is very portable and very good at the functions it is limited to but nowhere near as versatile as an old B&D Workbench. Sadly the new B&Ds are garbage and this is better than those for most things but still not great. In fairness it is OK at this price. The folding system is very clever and I suspect this is what wows people but as a working tool, I prefer my 30 year old B&D.

Are the newer non-cheap ones bad too?

Someone was selling an old one near me recently for a tenner, it went quick, I would have bought it for the new price of current ones!
I got this from screwfix for £30 its not bad not brilliant I have one side locks easy one is a pain and its a bit heavier & bulkier than I thought it would be but it is sturdy has some cons to a B&D but has more pro's for me. For the money the architecture is almost identical to a Mac Pro 4-5,1 but I think it can only support max the X5680 or W3680 hex core CPU running 3.33Ghz. The CPU heat-sinks aren't good enough for the high clock hex cores unless you polish the contact plate of the heat-sink and the CPU die also and use really decent thermal paste. Chipset is limited to SATA2 but I'm pretty sure they will support Samsung SM9XXX PCIe blades with an add on PCIe card or a PCIe SATA3 card.. 16000 geekbench multicore for a single hex core Xeon bought off ebay and dual socket nearly double that for the money is a great system. Like my dual socket 3.46 x5690 Mac Pro 5,1 with a PCIe blade, OS X and Windows ;-)

Again, I will repeat, it is not obsolete now but for less money you can … Again, I will repeat, it is not obsolete now but for less money you can get a newer i5 which has a more efficient output and will last longer, with ddr4 ram, more power etc..No one has said they ARE obsolete, but they will be quicker, and a 4790k is more expensive than a 6600k, so it makes literally no senseI spent my savings, 600 quid, on my rig, Im not saying for people to do so, but the CPU, GPU and mboard should be the 3 most expensive things, if you spend 140, why not spend 170 if you can and get a much, much better one? its a small extra amount compared to the added output and futureproofingI am literally poor as hell, a student who gets by on a weekly basis, and I spent my savings building this, but Im happy cos I know it will last in the future, much longer than outdated CPUs and 40 quid motherboards will

A £40-45 motherboard isn't going to be obsolete quicker than a £100-150 one. Both will be obsolete at the same time when Intel decides it's changing its socket yet again.

That's not how this works, you're not listening to anything anyone else is telling you. Yes a Z170 chipset is great, but unless you're an enthusiast and like overclocking and have a chip that is capable it's a waste of money. An i5-6400 will perform the same in a H100/H170 motherboard as it will in an expensive Z170 motherboard. And I urge you to prove me wrong using multiple, respected sources.

and one last thing, the 4790k performs much better than the 6600k, hence … and one last thing, the 4790k performs much better than the 6600k, hence the price

I agree with you, Skylake was overhyped and actually isn't that much better, however it IS better, 5-15% depending on the CPU in question, DDR3 will start to become obsolete in a couple years, at which point everyone with 1150 sockets and 4790ks will have to upgrade their RAM, their motherboard to fit their RAM, and their CPU to match their mboard socket, instead of just spending 70 quid more now and buying a better CPU (30 extra) and a z170 mboard (40 extra)

Now I'm no maths whizz but 40+30=70, which is an upfront cost to stop you having to upgrade a CPU and mboard in the future, which will most definitely be more than that.

Besides, the i5 6600k is better than the old 4790k at gaming and is considerably cheaper! It just makes sense (unless you already have an old 1150 setup in which case, its too late xD you'll need a new PC setup in a few years)

BTW Just like to clear this up cos I'm seriously worried from a couple of comments about coolers here, not using a CPU cooler with a 6th gen i5 is seriously risky, and if you're doing anything near decent usage, such as gaming, rendering or multi tasking, which most people with good i5s will do, then not using a cooler would be PC suicide

No that's also 3rd generation cpu. Note the one of Amazon come without OS. Very similar to deal posted hence cold for me.
Sorry cold for me but thanks for sharing. Since I dislike people voting cold without an explanation here goes.

For majority of people i7-3770 will be overkill and they won't notice a difference between this and a second gen i3. Same goes for memory any more than 8GB will be probably wasted by most. On that basis it isn't any better than a £200-£300 machine for an average user. Please note 30 day warranty on this as well. Hence cold.

On the other hand if this system is bought for e.g. gaming it will require an immediate upgrade gpu. You will be limited to low profile cards that are both more expensive and less powerful that the standard size ones that can run on 220W psu. That means a replacement psu and a case if we're talking normal size cards. That's another £200 spent between psu, gpu and a case. In which case you spent £630+ on a semi second hand pc. Considering you can get a gaming pc for £499 (link below) that make this deal also cold.

I could tech talk all week, but I best shut up now (im sure im boring everyone lol) but feel free to chat privately if you like I'd like to hear more about the FirePro and how u get on with it - if you get the time and want to talk about it etc

Either way, again, thanks for the info... I'll have to look into it further now while i play with the N54L

No OS on this either.
Your estimate was actually spot on, you added a PSU which you didn't need to, this seller has used the cheap rubbish one that comes with the case.

Um, I made an estimate and was 3% over, if you ignore all the areas where I overspec'd, and ignore the fact that I made no attempt to shop around. Honestly, are you a bit special, or something? The point was that this is a fairly ordinary price, and not a major discount or anything, and that's what my ebuyer listing backs up.

Ok it maybe be over budget but I like the idea of not having a cheap psu taking everything out.

I have to say that while Viking Direct are absolutely fantastic for stationary supplies, delivery of bulky stuff such as office furniture (which even when on an order with stationary) is handed to their Office Depot side - and the service is absolutely abysmal. I had a delivery date of 25th August shown on the website, 5 days after that I contacted customer services to say it didn't arrive on the 25th, and they said no, it won't, it's not next day for furniture - but the website says next day, 25th, it still says that today!!!

I have emailed customer services at Office Depot twice since the 5 days came and went, I didn't get a reply on either occasion - so at this time, I have no idea at all when my order of 24th August will arrive, but it definitely wasn't the 25th (as stated on the Viking website) nor was it 5 working days from date of order (as advised by Office Depot customer services) as that was last Wednesday! Ah well, what can you do (_;)

Who would be charged the insanely higher prices? Our Government and Military of course
No. This is simply Viking Direct charging different prices for the same item. Much like PC World selling you a £1 hdmi cable for £15.
