I only buy a laptop mainly for use on planes or at the airport so plenty big for me.

wseed

Thanks, I think one of the above. If I select offers it says sorry there are no offers available for this card. :( I think the extra £100 off would have tipped the balance to buying the new XPS 15 4k I've been eyeing up. Maybe I'll wait until they do an AMD version.

ian_stanley_matthews

Sure. If you log in the app, you will see 5 options across the bottom. One of those is 'offers' and it'll be listed there. If its not it could be as you say you haven't used it, or the type of amex (mine is platinum cashback, so it may vary offers)

wseed

Could you point me in the right direction for this. I've a Corp Card which I've never actually used. I've just installed the app but can't see anything about discounts valid for me. Could it be as I've never used the card.

Well, not exactly half price and not the same cpu (but tbh no much difference between the i5 and i7 ), they are both going to be worse than AMD competitors, though. I also assume that the 13'', 2in1 factor, premium built, better and brighter (touch)screen, better wifi card, touchpad, camera as well as genuine windows 10 license have not been taken into account. Btw I also ordered the Ideapad 15, with the metal palmrest but I don't expect anywhere near the same quality finish as the XPS' . XPS is a macbook competitor (in fact, better than the new, heat-sink and fan divorced 2020 macbook) , on the other hand the Ideapads are budget machines so shouldn't even be compared, they are not in the same league.

Sexy laptop but a 1500 flag chip with 8 RAM when the Lenovo deal has 16 for 500 quid I expect 32 at this price! And the AMD 7 whips the intel to the floor Only thing going for this is the sexy physical form. It’s like a blonde with big bo.bs but that’s about it but can’t converse or otherwise

If you don't care about a thin and light laptop, but want a powerful, rugged, cheap one - take a look at a used ThinkPad T440p on eBay (can be had for less than £100 used). Lots of opportunities to upgrade and customize as you see fit. You can put in your own IPS screen, a powerful multi-core Haswell CPU (37W TDP: i7-4702MQ or i7-4712MQ. 47W TDP: i7-4810MQ or i7-4910MQ), swap out the TrackPad and keyboard, *three* SSD hard drives at once, 16GB DDR3L RAM and you would still have change from £500. This brilliant buyers guide will walk you through it: https://octoperf.com/blog/2018/11/07/thinkpad-t440p-buyers-guide/

Check out the new Razor Blade Stealth. For the money better stuff out there. Suppose depends on what someone wants but me personally I wouldn't touch this Dell laptop whilst at this price. The Razor Blade Stealth was a quick 2 minute search. Sure I could find better if I had a good look. Suppose the Razor isn't a like for like comparison. But I am just thinking value for money.

plewis00

I don’t think it’s that hot a deal either but I’d argue it’s not overpriced in this segment - especially given the latest gen hardware.

Chris1910

(lol) Its not a hot deal, fact. Its overpriced for what you get.

plewis00

Like what exactly? You’re paying for the metal and carbon-fibre chassis, same as all the other super premium ultrabooks. If you rate a GPU that highly then this isn’t going to be a machine where you find value. As to price drops, Dell and all the other premium model brands typically don’t drop the price to keep them exclusive.

What are the benefits of Thunderbolt 3 for you at the moment? Yes it's future-proof but what makes you very keen to get it if you don't mind asking?

gowf

No The icelake have a huge improvement in graphics now equivalent to the AMD processors. Icelake is the newest 10nm professor The comet lake 10th gen has Sl better clock speeds but very much older intel graphics. The icelake is a much better processor overall though, but depends on the graphic subchip you have the G7 is the best with 64 graphical processing units followed by G4 then G1 is the older graphics. Confusing I know but intel are not exactly out to highlight their inferior products

This machine isn't for gaming, you can tell that by the screen, 4k and 60hz. No mobile GPU is driving that well. Real gaming laptops have 1080p 120hz+ screens. This machine is also pointless as a workstation, that i9 throttles in this chassis under a heavy workload. And you can overclock it...why? This machine is better with a 6core, save some cash get the i7.

kknb0800

It's not a laptop for serious gaming and there would be no point adding a power hungry graphics card to it. Agree, the price is quite high but that's what you pay for a very competent machine in a portable form factor. Having used this laptop for over two years, I would struggle to replace it with anything else. The 4k screen is a joy to use and it's essentially a tablet/phone quality screen on a laptop. The only thing I would change is the wifi adaptor which is easy enough to do

richard.reed

I agree. I brought the dell g5 for less than £600 and this has the 1060 which is a better graphics card!

ewertonrodrigo

I think the whole point is keeping the design as slim as possible. So the logical compromise would be on the graphics card. I believe a more powerful card is going to require much more space for cooling devices hence making the laptop bulkier.

deeky

I know the graphics card isn't making it expensive, it's the graphics card that's letting the machine down. Why would anyone compromise on such an expensive laptop?

You do realise this isn't a gaming laptop right? You're not paying for high end graphics specs. You're paying for the more portable package and superior build quality. Comparing a gaming laptop to one of these is like comparing a pickup truck to a sports car and complaining it only has two seats- you'd be missing the point of each product.

lucas4

Good deal for this model, but beware of the 56Whr battery. Dell used to do the bigger 97Whr battery even on these lower models, but not any more. Most reviews that say the battery life is excellent will have used the 97Whr version, not this 56Whr one.

I already own both, specifically an 8565U equipped XPS 13 and a lightweight MSI GS63 with 8750H + GTX 1060.

That's where I'm at plewis00. Chromebook for 90% of tasks as it's so much quicker, with the remainder falling to Windows. When Linux for ChromeOS gets GPU acceleration, even more will go to the CB.

plewis00

There has been some feature-creep and bloat in Windows 10 but it still runs very well for me and most of the time I'm using a Haswell-gen laptop (so 5 years old now). I also have another computer running Windows 7 and 10 just seems faster and smoother with things still working as they should. I run pretty clean installs, any machine with pre-installed bloat (McAfee being the worst) will struggle even with fast SSDs. I would use Linux but things I want to do are more hassle, and the things I could do in Linux but can't in Windows probably overlap with Chromebooks as well.

Masteryates

I wish I was being sarcastic plewis00. The way Windows 10 is getting so bloated, it's not looking good for limited hardware. The likes of you and I may be able to get more use by installing Linux or Cloudready, but for most, it's off to landfill.

slimjimjim80

Pretty sure the stated RRP gave me 16GB/512GB plus a 4k touch screen This I'd say is a normal price for the spec. My HP is better spec'ed for a tiny bit more. XPS range has a nicer 'feel' but not that much.

plewis00
