Thanks OP. I just bought this for £1028 using a Dell unidays code and the 2 year premium service trick above. Hope it's worth the money. I'm worried that the screen wont be anywhere near as good as my Late 2013 Macbook Pro 13 retina one. Need to wait and see, unless anyone has any info?

This is still active for me .. so not expired !

An extra £30 can also be saved on this with a free upgrade included also on top aswell too the 2 year premium support instead of the 1 year one so you can buy this for £1169 plus cash back from quidco or topcashback plus dell give money off dicount for students aswell also

That's exactly it, I find a lot of the ULV based devices are far too small to allow suitable cooling so they run hot and loud. I have a few Dell Core-M PC's (similar to the Y series) as they can run passively and don't get hot so they're far better suited to this type of design whereas the similar ULV PC's I find are irritating as there's a lot of fan noise and they run hot making them unpleasant when used on a lap. If I want performance, I'd go for a 35W or 45W processor as even the quad core ULV processors are poor performers for anything demanding despite the fact people now frequently believe the 5W processors are useless and the ULV processors are good for power users.

The older Dell XPS 13 (9360, 9350, etc not the 9365) had U-series chips. The Y series was obviously chosen to make it thinner and increase battery life but a quad-core would’ve been amazing here and what many power users spending this much probably want (even if the computer is a tiny bit thicker).

Dell’s words not mine, they could be being cheeky and be saying this if it requires a student discount to be applied too? Anyway, here’s a screenshot of discounts for the XPS 15.

Xps's aren't widely marketed for gamers, it's not a gaming laptop, it's for content creators who need portability.

This chassis can barely handle the 1050 as it is. You need something a lot chunkier to keep the 1060 cool.

I looked into doing it with mine but didn't bother in the end. Seems like you'll run into a lot of issues with drivers and you'll need to replace the WiFi card. As far as I'm aware the 1050 won't work at all either. Depends what you need it for I guess.

i would steer clear, its only got a gtx 1050 4gb, you could possibly find a 1060 6gb for around this price which is twice as fast at gaming, then again this model is really sleek.

I have had a few refurbished off dell and a couple of Sony a few years ago. All have been as close to brand new as I couldn't tell the difference. All wrapped, keyboard protector, screen protector film, all accessories sealed bags and wire tied. The last one I bought I was sent updates on the build progress so at a loss as to how that would be a refurb. Only thing about the dell ones were that they were in plain non branded boxes. However, I am hearing a lot of unhappy people lately (maybe since they started shipping from china) So I'm in 2 minds again about the outlet, they are very good prices especially when they have 15 or 20% codes and a good xps is an excellent machine.

Wouldn't buy from Dell again as their warranty support for the outlet is terrible - indian call centre, very hard to deal with. I ended up getting my credit card company to refund as Dell would not help or take the laptop in for a repair. Remember that outlet laptops are being re-sold for a reason, many are brand new and many are junk Not worth the hassle.

Ordered the 5570 which is all I need for basic use. Good deal with the further 20% off. Came to £296.64 in the end. Very happy with that. Estimated delivery of up to 14 days seems a bit slow though considering it is refurbished and therefore in stock and doesn't need building. Quick update. Laptop came and looked new. However the trackpad/mouse had a life of it's own selecting items even when just moving over them. Sadly returned it for a refund. Dell dealt with collection and refund very well so no complaints there.

Shame there is only the base version in the outlet though!

Personally I wouldn’t touch HP or Lenovo for their laptop ranges, bad experiences with built quality with Lenovo, and driver/software support from HP is abysmal. Not to be accused of being a fanboy... but those MacBooks are worth the money! (lol)

The dell screen is supposed to be better than the macbooks. In terms of nits too. I didnt know about the precision range. Ill look into it What about Spector and x1 carbon Id add sb2 but minus nits Thanks for the advice

The obvious choice is a MacBook Pro (another 100% RGB screen) - there’s a reason they’re so popular with photographers and video creators. Failing that, the Dell Precision range uses the same screens, but both options are extra £££ :/

But if screen is a priority what would you choose for that, power and user-friendly. Ie photo/video edits Thanks

Because Volta is due out soonish, when laptops come out with 1160's, that's when you'll see the 1060 ones drop to the floor but until then it's make as much money off the things as possible.

I almost bought that one, but that's a whole kilo heavier and I'm not sure if the extra horsepower that I'll use maybe once, is worth the extra heft of it.

It will be better than an XPS for gaming and should do the 'all round' stuff fine. I haven't looked at this model as I want the bit-sturdier and more compact XPS. It is worth checking some reviews to see if it suffers from thermal throttling too badly - the smaller XPS does, but it becomes less of an issue the bigger you go (the Alienware in the same deal will be much better on that side, but is massively bigger/heavier too!)

Cheers. Do you think the G5 I sent is worth it for a good all round gaming and general laptop? Hoping to pick it up tomorrow

No: this is the one: The G series is more biased towards games. While the XPS doesn't have quite as good graphics card (1050ti) and is more of a business/premium/'do it all' option. Mine will be used for programming in multiple IDEs, WAMP server, *lots* of browser tabs and so on. I have a seperate PC for gaming, the little I find time for that! I definitely want 32gb RAM at least - hopefully the deal tomorrow will make it cheaper for me to get this and upgrade than to have bought the 32gb model in the first place. (Maybe get a bit back selling the 2x 8gb modules.)

That’s the g5? If you’re looking for the 9570 it’s here -

I waited too long and they're all gone now ;(

I bought an XPS 13 a few months ago from AW. Came brand new. Don't bother with Amazon if you have warranty issues - it's Dell you need to contact. If it's not being registered Dell can do that for you over the phone - only slight issue is it's collect and return. You can also put in the service tag on Dell's support page and it'll show the warranty info. You can upgrade and extend it directly with Dell if you wanted too (that's what I did).

Anyone who's ordered this can clarify the warranty and also what the condition of the laptop was like? Thanks

Can anyone clarify the warranty situation regarding this deal? I've contacted Amazon a few times and they've given me different responses. Does it come with dell 1 year warranty? How long is the Amazon warranty on this? On live chat from Amazon I've been told it comes with dell warranty by some but also told thaf it doesn't by others. Also by some I've been told it comes with 2 year Amazon warranty and some saying 1 year.

Got one in the last few weeks, same spec as this for around £1200 with 2 year on-site warranty from Dell. Its a lot of money so I wanted a bit of a warranty - especially as I heard baad thing about Dell, though that might be more reflective of their volume sales than actual quality. You only hear from people when they have problems and you wouldn't make money if even a 20th of your output was faulty. It's very decent, especially at this price, but I would agree with a previous comment that battery life isn't amazing - not like an ipad or anything but I think I knew what I was getting myself into. Physical quality-wise its better than I expected. Reviews generally say the keyboard is ok, not great but ok. I love the keyboard and it's a mile away from my business Lenovo - I wonder what a GREAT laptop keyboard would be like if this just ok. The screen is superb, superb, superb! On full brightness it would combat a nuclear blast so although the screen is glossy you can combat it no probs. Good price, great laptop. P.S I ply my games like Bad Company 2, GTA V etc on high settings with no probs at all. It's not a gaming machine but it's got chops.

What would you like to know? The overly bright LEDs when charging? The WORST speakers on a premium laptop ever. The sharp corners? The light bleed? The rubbish battery?

The Inspiron 7000 series is the premium entry in the Inspiron line-up and admittedly, the quality has come on loads as it has to compete with metal laptops in lower segments (Asus Zenbook, Lenovo Yoga/IdeaPads, etc.) but the XPS still has the edge - the carbon fibre doesn't look cheap, it feels like plastic but then it's a composite material, it is incredibly stiff and rigid which is what gives it that quality feel, the metal lid is thick and doesn't really give or dent easily. I've had both of these and I'd pick the XPS all day long, but I do agree and I said it above, 1080p is perfectly fine for this, I have a very good 1080p IPS panel on a Dell Latitude E7440 (14" ultrabook) and it's bordering on being too small, but I do prefer to run at 100% as Windows just cannot deal with scaling properly and still can't after god knows how many years now. QHD and 4K on laptops of this size is just for 'retina' quality where you can barely see the pixels and have smooth fonts but you need much brighter backlights to achieve the same 'overall' brightness and much more power to drive the displays, and that seems like a waste to me. Dare I say it, the only mainstream OS that can deal with scaling properly is Mac OS X.

Old model is probably still better than my 5yo laptop just now, I ain't fussy lol :p

it's the old model, it'll turn up again no doubt.

Inspiron 7000 series 15 inch is basically that, just not quite as sturdy but better value. Or go full-fat Precision.

Do you have a recommendation for something only slightly thicker but of a similar build quality of the xps?

It's retail would have been nearer £1500 though with that spec, everyone knows if you have time Dell Outlet has the odd crazy offer that pop up. I didn't say I was always near mains, I said a charger was always with reach so the opportunity to run off mains and have nearly full charge is always there. You'd choose the XPS 15 as a premium thin-and-light with a discrete GPU, it looks smart for business or pleasure and is durable/rigid. I'm typing on a Dell Latitude ultrabook now and would rather have something lightweight on my lap than a heavy space heater/ball cooker.

I paid £958 nearly a year ago but i did get it from the refurbished section while there was a promo on with 10% off all outlet laptops. Fair enough, suppose it is different for everyone, I just figure if you're always near a mains and not using it on the go then why even go for an ultrabook, just get something a bit thicker for way less money.

I'd disagree. I would take a smaller battery to be able to have an SSD and hard disk at the same time over larger battery. I'm never far from a charger anyway and 'being portable' doesn't mean 'must have huge battery', I always thought it lasted long enough as it is and am normally on mains as performance is reduced on battery. Not sure I buy into 'future proofing' either, blink and it's technically out-of-date anyway, just buy what you need. You obviously value battery life higher than me and that's fine. How much more did you pay for yours then - can't imagine it was much less than £1500 if comparing like for like.

Dell Outlet is even better if you phone them. They can offer better prices than the outlet website on warranties and money off new accessories to go with refurb machines. There is also the default 10% off for anyone who has not ordered from Dell in the last 12 months. They can do this instantly over the phone, don't need to wait 24 hours for the code to be emailed. Anything with a Thunderbolt 3 port can be docked and drive 2 4K monitors, have an external GPU etc so while you're right most people will not use it for anything resource intensive it is entirely possible to do so. Personally when running chrome, slack, containers and a heavy IDE my RAM disappears pretty quickly while my CPU is mostly idle once everything's spun up. 16GB of RAM would have been handy and a pretty good pairing for the CPU. The lack of it is ultimately why I retired it for an office desktop.

I'm sure you are correct, I was comparing to my 2 yr dell xps which I guess must be another generation older than this (I had i7 then). I too was dissapointed with the 8gb ram and had intended to increase only to discover it's soldered!! I also have a HP envy with I5-7200U and that is a dog to use, it's soo slow compared to the 8th gen so I can't find any reasonable argument to buy this which is even older.

Yes, it's the QHD Touch... Personally I would have preffered 1080p for the longer battery life as I have my screen scaled to 150% anyway but they don't do 1080p in touchscreen.

dual core 6th gen processor?? you having a laugh at this price aren't ya. good price several years ago maybe but not now

I have a Latitude 7370 with a Core M7, 8GB RAM, 1TB SSD and the only major bottleneck for me is the RAM. I think it's because web browsers have increased their memory usage a lot over the last 3 months or so partly due to the Spectre/Meltdown mitigation. Prior to this 8GB was fine. Some more CPU grunt would be nice at times but not often.
