The Inspiron 7000 series is the premium entry in the Inspiron line-up and admittedly, the quality has come on loads as it has to compete with metal laptops in lower segments (Asus Zenbook, Lenovo Yoga/IdeaPads, etc.) but the XPS still has the edge - the carbon fibre doesn't look cheap, it feels like plastic but then it's a composite material, it is incredibly stiff and rigid which is what gives it that quality feel, the metal lid is thick and doesn't really give or dent easily. I've had both of these and I'd pick the XPS all day long, but I do agree and I said it above, 1080p is perfectly fine for this, I have a very good 1080p IPS panel on a Dell Latitude E7440 (14" ultrabook) and it's bordering on being too small, but I do prefer to run at 100% as Windows just cannot deal with scaling properly and still can't after god knows how many years now. QHD and 4K on laptops of this size is just for 'retina' quality where you can barely see the pixels and have smooth fonts but you need much brighter backlights to achieve the same 'overall' brightness and much more power to drive the displays, and that seems like a waste to me. Dare I say it, the only mainstream OS that can deal with scaling properly is Mac OS X.

Jenzer

Old model is probably still better than my 5yo laptop just now, I ain't fussy lol :p

audievo

it's the old model, it'll turn up again no doubt.

Jenzer

Bahhhhh, I've had my eye on this laptop for ages. Oh well. Weren't meant to be.

Inspiron 7000 series 15 inch is basically that, just not quite as sturdy but better value. Or go full-fat Precision.

JoshKraussKras

Do you have a recommendation for something only slightly thicker but of a similar build quality of the xps?

plewis00

It's retail would have been nearer £1500 though with that spec, everyone knows if you have time Dell Outlet has the odd crazy offer that pop up. I didn't say I was always near mains, I said a charger was always with reach so the opportunity to run off mains and have nearly full charge is always there. You'd choose the XPS 15 as a premium thin-and-light with a discrete GPU, it looks smart for business or pleasure and is durable/rigid. I'm typing on a Dell Latitude ultrabook now and would rather have something lightweight on my lap than a heavy space heater/ball cooker.

CowPuncher

I paid £958 nearly a year ago but i did get it from the refurbished section while there was a promo on with 10% off all outlet laptops. Fair enough, suppose it is different for everyone, I just figure if you're always near a mains and not using it on the go then why even go for an ultrabook, just get something a bit thicker for way less money.

plewis00

I'd disagree. I would take a smaller battery to be able to have an SSD and hard disk at the same time over larger battery. I'm never far from a charger anyway and 'being portable' doesn't mean 'must have huge battery', I always thought it lasted long enough as it is and am normally on mains as performance is reduced on battery. Not sure I buy into 'future proofing' either, blink and it's technically out-of-date anyway, just buy what you need. You obviously value battery life higher than me and that's fine. How much more did you pay for yours then - can't imagine it was much less than £1500 if comparing like for like.

These are last year's models. Dell just released 2018 refresh of XPS 15 laptops. 8th gen i5 model is £1300 and i7 is £1450, also with better SSD.

Dell Outlet is even better if you phone them. They can offer better prices than the outlet website on warranties and money off new accessories to go with refurb machines. There is also the default 10% off for anyone who has not ordered from Dell in the last 12 months. They can do this instantly over the phone, don't need to wait 24 hours for the code to be emailed. Also they reserve the machine you ask for once you start talking to them, whereas putting it in your basket doesn't reserve it.

The dell outlet is so much better value for money

Anything with a Thunderbolt 3 port can be docked and drive 2 4K monitors, have an external GPU etc so while you're right most people will not use it for anything resource intensive it is entirely possible to do so. Personally when running chrome, slack, containers and a heavy IDE my RAM disappears pretty quickly while my CPU is mostly idle once everything's spun up. 16GB of RAM would have been handy and a pretty good pairing for the CPU. The lack of it is ultimately why I retired it for an office desktop.

you_gotta_be_kidding

I'm sure you are correct, I was comparing to my 2 yr dell xps which I guess must be another generation older than this (I had i7 then). I too was dissapointed with the 8gb ram and had intended to increase only to discover it's soldered!! I also have a HP envy with I5-7200U and that is a dog to use, it's soo slow compared to the 8th gen so I can't find any reasonable argument to buy this which is even older.

you_gotta_be_kidding

Yes, it's the QHD Touch... Personally I would have preffered 1080p for the longer battery life as I have my screen scaled to 150% anyway but they don't do 1080p in touchscreen.

sul

dual core 6th gen processor?? you having a laugh at this price aren't ya. good price several years ago maybe but not now

Agharta

I have a Latitude 7370 with a Core M7, 8GB RAM, 1TB SSD and the only major bottleneck for me is the RAM. I think it's because web browsers have increased their memory usage a lot over the last 3 months or so partly due to the Spectre/Meltdown mitigation. Prior to this 8GB was fine. Some more CPU grunt would be nice at times but not often.

Dunno about the 7th gen, but 8th gen with a Quad HD screen tops 10 hours of battery life easily. It’s a far nicer panel than the FHD (not that the FHD is poor in any way), and I’d choose better screen over a CPU upgrade at the same price, but whatever floats your boat.

Schmutz

Used MacBook pro before and can say the XPS 13 is a wonderful laptop, worthy competitor. HOWEVER like you say, trackpad is central to everything and it just doesn't compete with MBP. There is also coil whine...

gunner5704

That’s personal preference. When 9th generation comes out you would then want that. But for this price a brand new laptop of such specs is a bargain.

Stitch123

Yeah it was a bit of a beast. I actually would have preferred it to my surface pro I think which I never use as a tablet.

plewis00

They’re available on Dell Outlet - that’s where I got mine from. I got the 9360R with the standard FHD anti-glare display for £800, it’s still a very good panel, doesn’t ravage the battery and I don’t really get touchscreens on ultrabooks so it’s lost on me.

Mine arrived today so well ahead of the advised delivery. Laptop looks pristine and comes in a no thrills brown box.

MrFizzy

Grrrr. Come on Dell, use a 21st Century Courier! Just been given a delivery date and no option to change it. Have to wait until the delivery fails and then you can re-schedule. What a waste of time and travel for the courier and an unnecessary delay in the delivery. Unfortunately there's no possibility to instruct them to leave it in a safe place (possibly understandable) but also no option to deliver it to a neighbor! All you can do is collect from the depot or specify an alternative day (with no indication of what time of day the delivery might be). Depot is 45 mins drive from where I live so long drive or take a day off work (no option for Saturday delivery, even if you offer to pay extra).

MrFizzy

Initial delivery date always seems very pessimistic. Normally received within 5-6 days. This does however still seem slow compared to most suppliers these days who will do next day delivery for items in stock. Dell's couriers also seem very inflexible with no option to re-schedule the specified delivery date and no actual details of tracking until the day you receive a text telling you that the delivery will be 'today'.

Kaminar

Just a quick question as this seems a good place to ask. For anyone who has dealt with the Outlet before, how have you found their delivery times? Placed an order on Friday and the estimated delivery is currently 06/04. Just wondered if Dell tends to be quicker then the estimated? Thanks :)

you_gotta_be_kidding

Good price but I much prefer the 8th gen, not just because of the significantly better processor (at least 30% more powerful) but also it has USB C power delivery, this will become charging standard very very soon.

Heads up to anyone who bought a laptop after seeing this deal. There is now a 12% code that works on pretty much everything over £799. I bought the £1200 Inspiron (with GTX 1060) on Friday, and it got delivered Saturday. This morning, the code reduced the same laptop to £1055. I'm just off the phone with Dell Customer Care and they have offered me a £120 refund. It's only a 10% refund, however I insisted on 12% as the current offer advertises, otherwise I would return it. She wouldn't budge from 10%, so I went ahead with the return. Called her bluff all the way through to the end, but then bottled it and just took the 10%. Good luck guys. Phone number is 0800 587 1456.

8th gen is definitely worth holding off for or spending the extra money, the coil whine is not unbearable for me, hardly notice it, so don't let that be a put off. John Lewis (where I work) were selling the xps 2-1 for 1099 (this spec I think I didn't really look thoroughly, it gets busy) so looks like they are being phased out for a new model, but a new model is going to cost the full normal price and yes it's better, by quite a bit, but it should be if if costs more so weight everything up. If you don't need the 2-1 get the 8th gen non touch screen, the screen is slightly less vibrant but you do get much better realistic battery

itsmattyjayy

Complete rubbish. The equivalent spec devices are a lot more than this, they can't game either, and not everybody is a gamer. This is perfect for bloggers, vloggers, video editors, photographers, students, frequent travellers, the list goes on, it's light, thin, almost bezel-less making it really compact, has USB c and USB A meaning no need for adapters and it should come with the Ethernet adapter in the box. So, in short, ignore that guy.

Johnmcl7

I find the ULV processors just as useless with professional software, reviews frequently slate the Core-m for not being any good for gaming, 3D work, video editing etc. but having tried some of those with the ULV processor, it's just as useless. Furthermore, the cooling systems for a lot of the ULV processors are inadequate, I've had both the XPS 13 and the Latitude 12 E7240 with ULV processors and stopped using both as they ran uncomfortably hot making them unsuitable for use on a lap (that's with the vents clear) and they had constant, intrusive fan noise even when idling. The Core-m processors are a lot more powerful than the tablets and not as far off the ULV processors as reviews suggest, unlike the ULV processors they can run entirely passively so no fan noise and they run without getting as hot either. I'm just glad I bought a Core-m machine before they got this undeserved 'rubbish' reputation as I think they're one of the better Intel processors have made in a while. I use Core-m for my portable machines and anything that needs more performance, I use a desktop and don't miss the slightly higher benchmark score for the ULV processors as they're still so painfully slow for anything remotely intensive that they're useless.

Plucking figures out of the air to prove your point lol! All those details are all minor and not going to have a great impact on how good the machine is. Batery life is a joke with all laptops at the moment as you can't replace them so don't see how you can say £70 difference. I am over the moon with my Xiaomi. All minor

Lowtrawler

Let's see, £70 for better cpu; £70 for better battery life; £60 for UK warranty; £30 to avoid the hassle of converting from Chinese windows; £40 for a better screen; £30 for a thunderbolt connection; £20 for an sd reader; £30 for the faster pcie hard drive; £40 for a UK keyboard. Add on the convenience off next day delivery, no risk of VAT or import duty surprises.....yeah, you'd be crazy to go for the Xiaomi.

GGMI

because that is clearly £400 worth of difference. If you are willing to pay nearly double the price for those minor upgrades then you are off your trolley!

fishmaster

So you're saying the Xiaomi Air 13 you bought for £500 has a i5-8250U with 4 cores / 8 threads and it has an infinity edge bezeless display? If not can you guess why the Xiaomi is cheaper?

Lowtrawler

Top tip for those wanting to track their Dell delivery. The dell tracking only tells you it's out for delivery but usually it is delivered by UK mail. You can track by adding 39999 to the front of your order number at the UK mail tracking site. It will even allow you to receive a text when you are next on the route and give you a 2 hour delivery window.

The point of 4K on this laptop is: it's actually a superior screen than the vast majority of other screens, regardless of the resolution

benjus

Even FHD on a phone is a considerably higher pixel density than 4k on a 15" laptop. 4k on a laptop is nice to have - thinks look very sharp and you can have more on the screen at the same time. It's not necessary for most applications, but it's far from pointless.

Probably a marketing ploy - 4K just has a nice ring to it for some people. Completely agree though, 4K on a phone is pointless IMO

I also don't see the point of QHD on a 5.8" screen. Samsung even ship the S8 with the resolution scaled back to 2220x1080. What's the use case vs FHD?

benjus

A few of us use computers for things other than praying games, you know. As others have said, this is a portable power user laptop, not a gaming laptop. The 4k resolution is great for things like photo editing and lets you have lots of things on screen at the same time.
