I dont understand why sat nav's excluded

I think you're misunderstanding how VAT works. It's not a 2.5% discount on the whole price, just on the VAT. So it's not a total of 7.5% off.

Yes it is a 2.5% discount on th whole price...

If you see something on Halfords.com for say £139.99 (Bike)...

You get to the checkout and they take 2.5% off that product in the basket section, then if you enter the voucher code you get an additional 5% off giving you a total 7.5% discount on the £139.99 product.

Halfords web prices are inclusive of 17.5% VAT UNTIL you get to the checkout page were an automated script knocks off 2.5% automatically.

So if I see something for £139.99 on the website - I can get it 7.5% cheaper by combining the voucher and the automatic VAT discount.

* As for Sat Nav reason - there is very little margin in Sat Navs which is why they won't allow discount on those items. (Very little mark up compared to what they buy them at)

If Halfords are interpreting the VAT reduction as a 2.5% discount off the whole item price, then that's great for their customers, but is still wrong. Let's take your item retailing prior to December 2008 at £139.99. If you deducted the VAT, (at 17.5%) this would cost you £119.14. At the current rate of VAT it would be £137.01. So by deducting 2.5% off the whole old VAT ticket price Halfords are losing almost 52p every time they sell this.

To calculate the non-VAT portion of the price you are paying, divide the ticket price by 1.15 (at present VAT rate, or 1.175 for old VAT rate). You have to remember that VAT is an ADDED tax, so the original non-vat price was 100%, the extra 17.5% (or 15%) is the VAT. Making the retail price 117.5% of the original. The temporary VAT reduction only applies to the VAT portion, not the entire price.

But like I said, if Halfords are doing it a different way, someone up top went to the wrong school, and their customers are benefiting (though not by much!)
