In terms of Pompeii, Pliny the younger did watch and write about the eruption that destroyed Pompeii so they might be referring to that. Although he did it from a fair distance and wrote it 20+ years later. That said a lot of his account backs up the archaeological evidence.
I would add heat but it's already been added to Pompeii. ;) I'll look forward this, I've visited Pompeii and love it.

Do you need to bring anything extra to the museum? Did people get in alright? This was from a Uniqlo promotion, so do you need to bring any proof of it? I know you'd need an NUS card for a student discount, for example.
