The Dell staff discount is only 15% so this is a pretty good deal

Are they overpriced for desktop computers? I'm thinking of getting a new one but not sure where to buy from.

all system builders are overpriced. dell are no exception. you might as well just wait for a deal on here on a prebuilt desktop pc. because that'll probably the best deal for a prebuilt one. otherwise everyone else will tell you to build it yourself.

It's very rare that a big box shifter offers good value. You'd generally be better off learning to build one, it should take about 30-60 minutes on youtube. Then you can cut out the labour costs you'd be paying the box shifter.
How about for the 13” Alienware laptop?

Disagree. If you just want "a PC with OK performance", I find it very hard to match the price of a mass produced, off the shelf model. Especially if you start with nothing and count the price truly with all the components (case, wire, cooler, keyboard, etc) and legal software. That said, I build my own. Over 20 years, it may have saved me money as I never replace it completely. For a single build from scratch, probably not worth it for the monetary saving unless you have an interest in learning.

Suggest a comparable laptop to the XPS 15 for less money?

Put next to MBPs, generally they're pretty good for the same spec.
(Though the current genreation has pushed the pirces up a bit - I'm getting frustrated waiting until they appear in the outlet.)
