Most sellers will be able to get better deals with their own bank. Paypal is for those with no other option, such as anyone with a poor credit rating, and ebay sellers, or very big retailers like ASDA and Argos that can negotiate a good deal.

​in actual fact banks charge small businesses a lot for card machines. these are more cost effective for most small sole traders

Paypal fees are higher than standard merchant fees. If you are involved with commerce, you would know that every percentage point makes a huge difference to profits. Credit card companies are having their fees capped at below 0.5% next month. That is way less than paypal that charges up to 3.9%+20p!
