Problem with the trading groups is they all want to do business via Paypal, who are just as bent as eBay. They took £300+ away from my account and refused to look into the matter. So now I'm cash only.

LankySi

Hey, let me know what you've got before posting on Facebook (excited) there are a ton of board game trading groups on FB. I'm a member of most of them and keep an eye out for people's sales to add to the ever increasing backlog!!!!

chungle78

There are certain rules you need to follow (the group is friendly though!). Never sold myself but know you need to state a price etc.

fab3rge

Cheers @chungle78 I’ve applied to be in the group! Hopefully I’ll be able to get these games sold on for a respectable price and be able to buy some food (lol) (I’m joking things are not that bad... yet)

chungle78

Have you tried Board Game Trading & Chat UK group? Games in a good state usually get snapped up pretty quickly.

Just to put my mind at ease, I tried to find this cheaper and no one has GP under £60. Although after watching Rahdo’s review, he does say it’s neck and neck with Clans of Caledonia, and then I watched that review and I think I prefer that! Although it’s definitely group dependent. I would happily try both games out now, but I know a certain group of friends I have who would instantly laugh at the idea of a “farm game”, but would perhaps entertain the idea of a space conquest sim... (I also have friends who can’t even get their head around how to play drafts - that’s the pleasure of having multiple social circles) (lol)

jayhutton10

As mentioned, Terra Mystica was the precursor to Gaia Project. They tweaked some of the rough edges in TM to make GP and changed the player count from 2-5 to 1-4. People are split on which is the better game as they are both decent. TM is very unforgiving though, a good player can have the strategy sorted on turn 1 as there's no hidden information or randomised stuff past that point. It's great, even if I lose most of the time

fab3rge

I think I’m going to need a bigger table. And a bigger room. And a bigger house... :p

chungle78

Gaia project is a reimplemented Terra Mystica. It has the same core mechanics with some changes (in my book improvements but there is a lot of people who disagree). Not sure I could justify both physical versions (I have the TM app and have friends with the game)

chungle78

I'm not overly excited about theme in general to be honest! Love great western trail and brass and honestly couldn't give 2 hoots about the characters in gloomhaven it's the mechanics that make the game great. If anything I probably prefer non fantasy settings now I think about it but obviously gloomhaven needs a fantasy theme as magic doesn't really work otherwise!

Whilst I agree, unfortunately that one looks like it may be a fake. Listed as unbranded and the box quality looks off in the photo. I could be wrong but I'm usually good at spotting things off with listings.

Engine building is a game mechanic that always makes me smile, it feels so satisfying when you get it right to start producing stuff efficiently!

fab3rge

Speaking as a solo player primarily, I’ve not played that many board games. I only started this year (I got bored of computer games). I’ve maybe played 10, but this one scratches an itch like no other game I’ve played yet. Negatives: It can get a tad repetitive. The solo missions are basically the same thing, with a different card objective. It’s the sort of game you go through patches of liking it. I’ve had it out/ away 4 times in the last couple months. The expansions help diversify it, but you’re not really beating anyone - it’s about a high score ultimately. Positives are, there’s a LOT of cards. Like 150 I think. You’ll rarely get the same high end production cards together. So when you get one, you are either grateful for it, or cursing the timing! It’s good mental dexterity. I’m feeling smarter as you really need to think ahead, but in terms of multiple production lines. Like, you can make a factory that produces 2 energy, and those two energy can produce a Zeppelin, which produces science cubes, which can be used to develop time travel, which produces rare krystallium (wild) and that can be used... you get the idea

jayhutton10

It sounds right up my street to be honest. Thanks for the information, I may watch a playthrough or two before attempting to convince the boss

fab3rge

IAWW base game has 6 solo missions, although they’re all fairly similar. In multiplayer, you draft until each has 7 cards of their choosing, from a larger pot. In solo, there’s much less choice in your selection, so to counter that you are given 4 decks of 10 cards (split into 4x2 rounds). You can choose to develop a card, for its production capabilities/ points/ both, or “recycle” for the base element, one of 5 resources you need to build your portfolio. There’s a lot of tough decisions to be made and each round has it’s own dilemmas. You need to focus on production initially, but points win you the game. In solo, you are scored for your efforts, from a town leader to a world conquerer. I’ve found middling scores are achieved through skill, but you need a large dose of luck to score highly - Like when there’s a card you need, or a fantastic card pops out when you have surplus production just going to waste otherwise.

jayhutton10

I didn't know it was soloable, hmm I may reconsider it

I agree. I've actively not been posting as many Amazon deals lately as part of this

chungle78

Shame as they are a great independent retailer who no doubt needs help getting through lockdown

jayhutton10

Yep I checked and still available there. Hukd won't allow it though due to insufficient reviews

jayhutton10

That's good to know, I really like the look of it. I've played a bit of Bruges on Yucata and really liked that although my friend and his son weren't as keen. I loved the puzzle of it in trying to maximise what you drew and set yourself up for future rounds. La Isla was also really nice, although I didn't do very well in that one the 2 times I've played it. I keep meaning to try The Speicherstadt/Yorvik as like the idea of that one

chungle78

Oh and it's still cheaper at thirsty meeples at £37 plus £4 postage (free postage over £50 spend)

Plus, let me know what Bonfire is like. It looks crazy but in a good way

jayhutton10

Ooh, thanks. It didn't show when I searched earlier. They have a code on BGT&CUK at the moment I spotted earlier. I'll expire this one

chungle78

Hi Jay, only £21.99 on 365games and they have a promotion going where you could save 10% bringing it down to under £20. If I hadn't just ordered Bonfire and Tekhenu from thirsty meeples (the cheapest place I could find these 2) I might have been tempted... Bought the other games as they play solo and trying to avoid the temptation of games that only play with 2 or more for now

I've played several rounds of this solo using the app. Really good game. HotUKDeals needs more board game love

lastjunkie

this took forever to get to the final dungeon, and only thorugh some massaging of the rules by the DM. good fun though, but it's a large time investment if you're only playing it every so often.

jamesvolunteer

It has the app in 2nd edition. It's most similar to Star Wars Imperial Assault.

This has been on my list for a while. Does it have app integration? Or is that 3rd and what the issue is? The app in Mansions is great.

Official 14+ guidance (probably to avoid being classified as a toy). User guidance on BGG is 12+

jayhutton10

It's a Martin Wallace game so they are usually relatively involved. BGG weight of almost 3 so medium-heavy complexity.

Ah, I have a friend who has played Fenris and they said it completely changes the dynamic but in a good way. Makes it all feel fresh again. I also think scythe is a lot lighter than its made out to be. I taught it to 2 non gamers in 10 mins and neither of them had to query rules after the first 2 rounds. I need to play scythe again (lol)

JayJay

I definitely have found you can become a bit more automated the more you play but then adding new players has changed the dynamic over the course of the 4 years. Ive got the Fenris expansion and we were due to start the campaign before Covid kicked in... :(

jayhutton10

Have you found that you tend to do the same things with the same factions the more you play? We did so took a break from it for a bit. I need the Fenris Expansion I think to mix it up a bit!

JayJay

I've played this loads over the last 4 years. Well worth the investment.

jayhutton10

They have a pricing metric that is supposed to make them slightly cheaper than major competitors but like all things like that it works ok when competitors have stock but if they don't it tends to go a bit mental. There have also been a few recent instances of things getting damaged in transit as they weren't packed properly.
