I'm a big fan of the YHA. If you haven't been to a hostel in recent years, then many of them have been given a spruce up with significantly improved facilities. Just the thing for enjoying the great outdoors of England and Wales - there's lots of it!

I miss that running stream behind the hostel, music to my ears
Good for single travellers and those not using cars. Cheap deal family room at Travelodge or Premier Inn usually a better deal for 2 plus travellers. Just had a short break in Durham for 4, £30 a night in a family room.
They have a community atmosphere to them that you don't get in hotels used by business travelers.
Stayed at YHA helvellyn was amazing, on-site pub and food or kitchen to make your own we stayed in a land pod. the Lake District is unreal
That's YMCA, not YHA.

Ooh thanks, that's good to know we have got a long weekend in couple of weeks and it worked out less than £40 per night for the two of us. Looking forward to it!
My son spent last weekend in the one in Stratford upon Avon with his rugby team and a load of the parents. Everyone was very complimentary about it - basic rather than luxurious but spotlessly clean
They do have traditional bunk rooms for males/females bur I've really noticed them up their game in terms of making the hostels more accessible for families. I think with places like Airbnb etc they had to widen their spectrum to stay current. The Ironbridge one had alot of families there when we stayed and they tend to keep the family rooms away from the others. Some of them are really old National Trust buildings, and are very quirky. For some of the prices for family rooms for 4, 5, 6 people they are great value. Some people won't like them, but it all depends what you expect.
I confess I was a bit wary, as I'd never stayed in a Youth Hostel before, but I couldn't fault it and wouldn't hesitate to book elsewhere. I had a vision of dormitories full of strangers (which isn't for me!) before being told you can have a private room. I've since looked at hostels in London (only reason for not booking was they didn't have the availability I was looking for). I'd imagine they'd be great value for people with a few kids, as well as groups of friends/family.
I'm a big fan of YHA, if you intend to need a place to lay your head & rest up in an evening they are great (docklands I used a lot in the past) then a 5 minute walk up the road for the tube into the heart of london city (if that's your thing). Safe & they serve you well with odds & ends, basic bar & comfy chairs being the mainstay.. ideal for folk who don't need polished granite bathrooms when making the most out of a destination.

Hi, Where do you add the promo code?? I can't see an option to add it when signing up..
The Princes Trust regular has a promo on for half price, that the auld ones like me can use :) Earls Court was nice for a few days in London, posh side, quiet and 5 min to Earls Court underground with loads of shops coming or going to the station.
Ah Ha!.... I am thinking of signing up just so I can get a YHA card with Chris Eubanks name on it.
You sure you aren't getting mixed up with YMCA?
Hi everyone! YHA aims to help young people, families and friends, and individuals to explore, learn and relax the length and breadth of England and Wales. We are especially committed to helping young people: “To help all, especially young people of limited means, to a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside, and appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities, particularly by providing Youth Hostels or other accommodation for them in their travels, and thus to promote their health, recreation and education”. Thanks, The YHA Team.

Agreed. Also (pretty obviously) a one night stay wouldn't be enough, I think a three night stay would be the minumum for me) It also says 'group bookings are excluded' Anyone seriously this of doing this with vouchers, would be well advised I think to talk to the YHA directly before doing it Ps the voucher exchange is actually 3 for 1! I've amended the voucher
Possibly, Tesco clubcard vouchers could be used in the ratio 2:1 to pay for accomodation. Here At least they can be used for membership of the Y.H.A
Sorry can't resist listing at least one. This may only be 20% off. Sometimes the interiors are 'ultilitarian' because they are after all youth hostels, but not so much it seems here. Bryn Gwynant (sleeps 30) from £180[image missing]
