Necessary tool for the napping home worker.
    SimonFin's avatar
I run big analysis, and the machine locking can cause the work to fail. These prevent that.

IT Manager here. If your device is managed by a company MDM we typically know when you’re using these things. We know when you’re watching Youtube and Netflix on the device usually too. However, IT are far too busy doing other things to sit there looking at this info. Productivity tools and trackers are almost always brought in by HR, and investigations are usually instigated by HR rather than IT. It’s not really IT you have to worry about, we have better things to do. But we can produce all sorts of reports on your activity is asked. Check the acceptable usage policy for your device and the working from home agreement if you have one.
    harrythefish's avatar
I checked the WFH agreement and found I'm being paid only half the cost of providing office space and infrastructure for my employer.
  3. Chiptivo's avatar
We run a start up script that sends device manager details and we compare against a baseline to spot these and similar.
Instant report to HR as breaks use of IT and many other rules.
    AttentionHorse's avatar
So, plug it in after start-up.

Your script probably can't distinguish between this and any other USB mouse in any case.

Just open a YouTube video or use something like Jitbit macro recorder or AutoHotKey… no need to spend money (edited)
    kdb550's avatar
YouTube videos do not prevent you from showing as being away in teams.

    Thank me later

    Dim objResult

    Set objshell = WScript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
    i = 0

    Do While i = 0
    objresult = objshell.sendkeys("{NUMLOCK}{NUMLOCK}")
    Wscript.Sleep (30000)
    loop

    save as xxxx.vbs

will toggle numlock every 30 sec

To turn it off, open taskmanager and kill process "Microsoft ® Windows Based Script Host"
    Szabster's avatar
Except a lot of company laptops wouldn't even let you open task manager let alone kill a process.

Go on long term sick and forget this nonsense.

There is a major major security risk when you’re plugging in random USB devices into business related computers….

Also, I have bought a cheap random label printer from Amazon before and its drivers came with a virus…
So good luck explaining to your boss you just plugged in some device that claimed to be a mouse jittering device… (edited)
    Limmy's avatar
Plug it into a colleague's computer first to test. Job done.
  8. Drupiter's avatar
Put your mouse on an analogue watch. The seconds hand will stop the screensaver- don't use scripts or usb jigglers, that's a good way to get detected and sacked
  9. SFconvert's avatar
A wireless mouse in a pocket does similar. Also I've heard that putting your wireless mouse over a watch with a second hand works
    harrythefish's avatar
I tried that and the wife asked if I was pleased to see her.
  10. suzwoodward's avatar
For anyone worried that their company may detect a “2nd mouse” being plugged in (as some have said in the posts above) it’s possible to purchase a wireless mouse with built-in jiggler for a couple of quid more on Amazon, where it states it will only be identified as “mouse” on your computer:

Is there an option I can use without software? I work across multiple laptops and one takes 4-5 attempts to login and locate a connection everytime the display goes off... suggestions please??
    d1001541's avatar
PowerPoint single blank slide in presentation mode minimised. Screen will never go off
  12. bavique3's avatar
No any need for that, I'll give you a free website you access and it will keep your pc awake.
    Search for this: https://nosleep.page/ (edited)

I use this to stop my remote machines from sleeping while I'm not on them

Around £2.10 incl VAT from aliexpress.com/ite…tml if you can order other Choice Delivery items £5.90 or greater in value to get free delivery (£8 min order).
  14. LAS00's avatar
Things like this and then WFH people wonder why the company wants them back in the offices
    fk221's avatar
If everyone was in the office, and you wasted time every day just chatting with people or going to get coffee or whatever, no one would bat an eyelid. But do the same at home and suddenly everyone's suspicious as to why you're away on teams. (edited)

    Unbelievable! How totally useless!

    We need the USB-C version!

I just use a little background task called Caffeine which prevents the work PC being locked every couple of minutes while I'm busy doing work on the other PC.

all companies allow external software to be installed?
  18. steven5watson's avatar
Open a PowerPoint presentation then leave it in the background. Prevents the computer going to sleep. You're welcome... *drops mic, walks away*
    d1001541's avatar
Mic not dropped as doesn't solve the issue of teams status changing to away
  19. PhonalClapard's avatar
I'd steer clear of this. Even the most clueless IT departments can detect when an unfamiliar USB is plugged in, and with just a bit of investigation, figure out its intent. Several free alternatives are available, such as wedging the CTRL or spacebar keys down or playing a PowerPoint presentation.
    plewis00's avatar
I think the point here is it’ll appear as any other HID device so no, they won’t know what it does other than it’s ‘probably a mouse or keyboard’ of some kind.
  20. d1001541's avatar
Just use Microsoft power automate and set up a routine to double click the task bar every x seconds then loop
  21. SahmeeP's avatar
Another software option is "awake" which is provided by Microsoft as part of their PowerToys bundle you can download for free.

Obviously those without the ability to install software will need to resort to physical solutions

It's a shame you can't reprogram these to move by more pixels, much more often for a Twits-like co-worker wind-up. Plug them into the USB port on the back of the monitor and off you go. (edited)
  22. ljoshrocks's avatar
Just run a PowerPoint presentation in a loop
    d1001541's avatar
Doesn't stop teams going to away
  23. ZigoRich's avatar
I use an app called PreventTurnOff instead, which you can get as a portable version if you want. I just use it to circumvent the stupidly low sleep and hibernate settings
    TheDongMaster's avatar
this seems to be the biggest issue, the away/hibernate status being way too short so people are finding other solutions
  24. Chojiin's avatar
Most companies will have USB filtering to prevent "unsolicited" devices from being connected. Besides that, I wouldn't trust this PoS in the slightest.

Just open notepad and put something heavy on the spacebar - free and easy.

Or just download software which already does it!
    Oaking's avatar
Except your IT team can tell if you run those programs, while this just works the same as a mouse plugged in. Not saying they will check, or even care, but this gives some plausible deniability if it ever comes to it. (edited)

If you can work from home, you can be replaced, so praise the lord when you have to return to the office.
    Rush_More's avatar
You saying if you work from the office you cannot be replaced?? Something something outsourcing something profit something comes to mind.

    Better trick
Put an empty water glass over the space bar in a word document
Once it hits end of the line it will keep pinging and won’t go to sleep (edited)
    WasteMoney's avatar
I put a glass of water over my space bar but it’s gone over the other keys too
Which has caused computer to stop working

How am I to explain this to work?!
  31. parishilton1's avatar
Do not buy one of these. I have the exact same model and it bookmarked hundreds of links from P*rnhub - even put them in folders according to category. I had a hell of a time explaining it to IT.

Do some actual work you lazy buggers
    sarah_collier's avatar
I'm tired of entering a password every 8-10 mins when the screen locks and then decides to not connect and let me back in... it's frustrating
  33. t3r4's avatar
We joke about a coworker who probably uses one of these. They're always active in teams but never respond.

Whereas I'm often away/offline when in front of my computer, got teams on my phone and answer straight away wherever possible. Far more effective to keep people guessing imo.
    Szabster's avatar
I do the same but one manager always messages me telling me that people might think you're away and it can hinder productivity... Yeah... People messaging me all the time hinders my productivity for sure.
  34. OggyUK's avatar
Glad I work for an employer that doesn't question my teams status, but then again, I'm not workshy.
    Szabster's avatar
I'm happy for you. I know people who get questioned as soon as they go away on teams. It's not about being workshy it's about some managers love breathing down everybody's neck.
  35. ran123ran's avatar
I love the opportunity to WFH as saves travel time, travel costs & can do school run (in own time as work later to make up time).
Also like it that we have 2 core office days each week so allows for proper catchups & one to ones, etc
I don't know how people get away with not being productive at home. Surely their managers aware how long it takes to do X, Y & Z. Their performance should be managed instead of penalising others by getting everyone back into office fulltime. (edited)

    Is it legit undetectable?
    colin79666's avatar
Any IT department worth their salt will at least be able to detect you have two mice connected and can then question why! They probably have a common hardware id that can be blocked.
  38. dave.watton's avatar
No need for this device, just install a piece of software called Caffeine it’s free and will stop your computer going in to sleep mode!
    Malik_34's avatar
Most if not all, workplace computers don’t allow admin rights to install softwares etc
