About this deal
This deal is expired. Here are some options that might interest you:
**UPDATE: Amidst the great public response on this, there's been some cynicism that its somehow a ploy to get loads of HMV gift cards so we can use them if/when they work again. This was never the case, but we can see how this perception existed. So, now, we'll be returning the cards after the end of the promotion. Hopefully that will clear that up.**
The news of HMV going into administration has been the talk of everyone - especially so if you work at a record shop. Banquet boss jt wrote his immediate thoughts about it on the Banquet tumblr at banquetrecords.tumblr.com/pos…hmv
We're very aware and sad that people are looking at losing their jobs, and we're concerned about the effect HMV's possible closure may have on physcial releases in general. However, one gripe many have is the current situation where gift cards are now no longer valid at HMVs. Whatever happened, its certainly no fault of the person who got someone a Christmas gift, and its unfair on someone to not be able to use their credit.
We wanted to find a way to make these gift tokens valid at our store. But the system using an oyster-esque card, means we've got no way of knowing how much credit is on them. So this is the best idea we could come up with. We'll offer anyone with an HMV gift card 50% off in our store up to and including Sunday 20th January.*
We want people to come and experience our record shop. To see its not all doom and gloom for music retail nor for the high street in general. To come and re-embrace physical releases and the experience of buying them. Pop into our store at 52 Eden St, Kingston KT1 1EE and we look forward to welcoming you. *There are a few terms and conditions. The offer applies to one single transaction in the physical store only. One transaction may include multiple items. After the transaction the HMV gift card must be handed over. Some products (like gig tickets, pre-orders, record players and extremely limited releases) will be exempt from the 50% deal. Please note; Deloitte have said that in time the HMV gift vouchers may be useable if and when a new buyer for the chain is found. We will not be able to return surrendered cards. Offer ends on Sunday 20th January 2013.

sorted byThats not this shops fault though...something is better than nothing. A nice gesture from the owners I'd say.
Unfortunatly, the internet is populated with far too many loud mouth, know nothing cowards that believe they have the right to criticise whatever crosses their path, just because it has. If you criticised Banquet prior to this comment, then this is aimed at you - grow some balls.
P.S Heat.

They have out-lived these retail giants through having a loyal customer-base that support their local independent record store and the service they receive from it. I wish I could say I was one of them, I don't visit Banquet nearly enough as I used to but they are and always have been treasure to Kingston.
Those who consider this promotion to be disingenuous, having been a regular HMV/Play customers, are the most oxymoronic sheep I wish to never meet.
If you've got an HMV card with a few quid on it, you'll get a great deal out of this to shoulder the blow of losing the small amount you had invested on a worthless piece of plastic. If you've got an HMV card with £20+ on it, you or your relatives/friends who bought it for your are fools. This company has been dying a slow and painful death for years. This was inevitable. I have no sympathy for you.
And the notion that Banquet are underhandedly hoping to hoard all of these surrendered cards in the faint hope that HMV will survive their imminent demise... has to be the funniest thing I've read all week. Kudos to the imaginative conspiracy theorist who thought that one up.
How is it? They are no use to them only as you will be only able to use them in a HMV shop to buy goods. I'm sure they won't want to do that.
A genuine gesture I would think.
They may even end up loosing out. People could turn up with cards with just a few pence left on them an exchange them for several pounds worth of goods.

'David we've been advised of a few ways to tell if the vouchers are valid. and yeah, if people really wanna come down with cards that have 1p on them, well, that's a decision the customer needs to make. We're of the opinion, that particularly in the current climate, people won't abuse the spirit in which this offer was created'
Also spotted someone making this comment on their facebook 'Nice profit in pre loaded gift cards if someone does decide to rescue them'
This was the reply they got
'the thought of taking the vouchers off to HMV was never in the consideration... it was more so people couldn't come back time and time again. The insinuation that we're doing this to somehow claim all the credit on those cards is SO far away from how this all came about. We might find a way of giving them back if/when they become valid to put people's mind at ease. something for a quick meeting amongst the decision makers in the morning'
Hope this clears a few things up about their intentions.
This is a brilliant piece of marketing genius.
Just imagine the coverage this shop is now receiving.
It's a scumbag move for any company to say that they don't accept giftcards when they're going into administration. It's pre-paid for goods fudge sake... Also, amazing how little effort is taken to liquidate their stock and try to get some cash in. The "xy sports" and "sports yx" are liquidating stock every day of the week that has the letter 'y' in it...
Depends what you're buying I guess! Personally I'd have a field day picking up loads of vinyls.
Would they though? Even after offering 50% off their own stock? If that was the case it's a big gamble, and I don't think Banquet are the sort of guys who would do that.
I like it when you buy something online when you open up your package they always take the time to write a nice little note about either the stuff you've just bought or recommendations for you to consider that are similar to what you've just bought.
It's a nice gesture from them with the vouchers.

At the end of the day it's a choice. You can't spend them at the moment in HMV and theres no guarantee they'll be reinstated any time soon...so this at least gives you a choice. People are always so negative.
So they're hoping the incentive of 50% off will at least break even for them, let people know where the shop is and hopefully procure a few new customers out of it.
Like all the big players they didn't give two hoots about the small independent stores on the high street when they were expanding. It was all about the money and then not failing to move with the times until they got swallowed up by a bigger online fish.
As in all walks of life, someone can think they're the big man but there's always someone bigger around the corner. Whilst the big men fight it out, the little guy who chooses not to get involved can just get on with own business and continue to thrive in his own little environment.
Weird analogies i know but hey's it's 3.30am!
Most people don't keep hold of empty gift cards and even if some did, the average value would still be high.
Nice spelling and grammar, by the way.
Well done Banquet records.

I've not always seen eye to eye with Banquet but in this instance I think they've been brilliant with this offer. Sure it's not just from the goodness of their heart and they hope it will do them some good in the long term but it's still a fantastic offer for the record buying public and it saved me the hassle of spending hours in HMV trying to find anything remotely worth spending my voucher on! Thumbs up to JT and Banquet records!
And you don't think HMV have done this?
Knowing full well that small record shops cant compete and they under cut ridiculously anyone that may threaten there profits. It's just business get over it.
Good on the record store
Prove it !!!
I think you're talking a load of crock.
and....it works. Good for them, clever stuff.
Would love a thread on who's got the most money on their hmv cards!
Who in their right mind would of bought hmv store credit anyway???
Not as though it was a secret.

Hopefully my latest update will change your mind. Of course they are promoting themselves, as they've said they are a business and bills need paying, but after offering 50% off their own stock the main winners here are surely the customer with the HMV voucher which they will now get back to possibly spend at HMV if it's saved.
