About this deal

Great price, part of the BA sale, Good availability from this May all the way to next March. BA's baggage allowance is fairly generous, allowing you 2 pieces of hand luggage, so works out better than the Norse deals (if you wanted any hand luggage allowance). Flights are from Gatwick & Heathrow.

New York City comprises 5 boroughs sitting where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean. At its core is Manhattan, a densely populated borough that’s among the world’s major commercial, financial and cultural centers. Its iconic sites include skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and sprawling Central Park. Broadway theater is staged in neon-lit Times Square. ― Google

Gatwick is a pain to get to if you live up north,Heathrow is much easier, some dates you can book direct with BA for an extra 20 quid & fly with American airlines code share, the food & service is far superior

Ever heard of Thameslink? Great connections from Kings Cross and St Pancras Stations, a short walk from Euston Station, Direct to Gatwick. It’s Heathrow that’s a pain (though now better with the Elizabeth Line)

For those wondering what I meant about luggage, one perk of choosing BA for the "base" fare is that their hand luggage should suffice for more than a few nights

    Cabin baggage - what's included:
    • 1 Cabin bag. Maximum size: 56x45x25cm with 23kg weight limit
    • 1 smaller personal item handbag or laptop bag up to 40 x 30 x 15cm including handles, pockets and wheels.

Also worth noting this works over the Valentine's period next year (also book directly with BA, I just used Skyscanner as it's easier to display the prices) (edited)

Always found BA to be relaxed on hand baggage too. Did a cabin bag and a backpack with no questions to the US before.

New York has become ridiculously expensive. It's hard to find a decent room for less than 200gbp per night. Imo there are many better places to visit for that type of budget.

If you stay in places like Jersey City or Hoboken, its much cheaper. Regular PATH trains and easy to catch buses into Manhattan.

if you are going to take long haul flights, always buy from the airlines website. if for whatever reasons you need to claim/ cancel/ etc your flights, it is hell easier to liaise directly with the airlines. not worth saving 100 quids for this.

also just learnt that BA allows two hand luggage, up to 23kg each. that is very generous! (edited)

I've read some pretty horrendous stories in the press about people trying to get BA customer services to apply common sense.

I'm flying BA later this year and dread something going wrong

Shame New York costs an arm & a leg for the average tourist these days

It's sometimes better just to book New York as a package holiday.
Last time I went, it was cheaper for me to have a day in the city and then to fly to Miami and have a couple of nights in a nice hotel there than it was for one night in NYC, and it wasn't even a busy tourist time.

As said, hotels are $$$$. $250-$600 a night seem pretty common, but then again, a lot of US places seem to be at least double what we might pay in the UK.
Even redeeming hotel points isn't worth it half the time. I've seen half the hotels going for 120k IHG points a night on some days and these could even be in less popular areas.

Any good reasonably priced hotels to recommend near NYC for an extended family trip with young kids and older parents. I don't mind traveling from Hoboken/New Jersey if it is near train station

Also would you know of any tour operators which would cover Niagara falls from NYC. (edited)

A lot of options. I am doing my first trip to NY within 2 weeks. I might stay either in Holland tunnel or in flushing.

I had not noticed than most of the long distance flights/airlines now don't offer included checked-in baggage.

Anyone remember when that has changed?

(My wife travels with 2 small kids and has always needed a large suitcase, which was previously included but not anymore. I guess if she chooses the next level she'll be allowed to 3 large suitcases, even though she just needs one?)

Started with budget airlines years ago

Then long haul jumped on the bandwagon

Don't stay at millennium premier hotel in times Square. Paid so much and they still have not returned my deposit a month later. No protection from bank either. Getting ignored on emails and contact forms.

I've stayed at a hostel a few times. "The Local" is a good one in Queens / LIC.

Might not be luxurious as a hotel, but sometimes they're c£50 a night for a bed in a shared room (private rooms might be available) and convenient if you're going to be out all day anyway, or have a short time in the city.
I.e. arrive later in the evening, sleep, tourist things, fly out. Better than £250 for a hotel.

I've stayed in LIC a few times. Done Manhattan before so no need to stay central these days (I mainly go just for the baseball in Flushing). It's a bit on the industrial side but I've never felt unsafe even at night. I'd still suggest a hotel no more than a block from the subway, though.
