I need something mostly for work purposes, maybe the odd social call to family a few times a year

How is this for the price?

Decent. A good light source is the most important thing so having a ring light built in is good. Alternatives are c920 if there is enough light in the room and can do 1080 so a step above this. Going above that you are heading towards Brio 4k but they cost around £120. Then maybe insta link 360 but that's £250! (edited)

A recommendation for this camera. Used for work calls and people comment on the quality. I use the built in mic for calls and also recording videos.

Only downside is sometimes having to trick the auto focus, but that is when I'm trying to show something close and then removing it. (edited)

In 2024 we still have things at 720p?

Webcams haven't changed much. Add to the fact no services use more than HD, some might been be limited below 720p.

If you are making YouTube videos, sure you can go up-to even 8k. But then you likely need a video camera not a webcam.

You also have to consider what people will pay. £30 sure, £100 Very few will spend that. Building a high spec webcam has r&d costs as well as higher material costs. In summary it's just not worth it. Higher spec video needs more CPU power, so costs rise across the board.

I see it as mostly c920 (£40), brio 4k (£110), insta360 link (£250), Sony mirrorless + lens + capture card (£900). Capture cards can be fiddly, whilst webcams just work.

If you want better quality without extra cost. Look at using your phone. Plenty of apps that will work. That's because your phones are built in bulk to keep costs down, and it has all the processing power required for the rest of the phone. It's just not a dedicated webcam so you'll need to set it up each time. (edited)

I have been looking for a webcam for work from home calls. I learnt other team members just join video from their iphone or so on teams call and then also join teams from PC without webcam. In the call its just shows as one person not joined via two devices and the iphone cam is very good in low light as well
So really thinking if this is really needed now hmm
