I worked on the Smart meter programme of a large energy supplier in 2015. Getting a Smart meter isn't going to save you any money on it's own, but it does provide opportunities to save money if you use the data in a meaningful way.

Here are a couple of examples of how Smart meters can be benificial

I'm on the agile tariff from octopus, and this means my energy price changes every 30 mins. Prices are more expensive between 4pm and 7pm, but they are normally much cheaper outside of these times (in fact I've had days of negative pricing, especially when it's windy and there is a glut of electricity, so I've been paid to use power) . I've saved 40% on energy costs just by moving my usage away from peak times. We don't use the washer, dryer or dishwasher at peak times.

The smart grid, which is really what smart meter are about, could potentially reduce peak loading. For example, it is theoretically possible for a manufacturer to create a smart fridge that only turns the compression on at cheap or low demand times

I get they are not for everyone, but if you have one and are willing to change your behaviours a little, they do support saving money (edited)

Pay with gift cards bought from Topgiftcards to save another 8.8% of subtotal.
    A total of 31.6% discount.
If you bought from your cash back then you would get a further boost. Perhaps 15% of gift card total, making 41 .86% discount (edited)

If purchased with USD that was bought when the exchange rate was 2:1 (back in 80s) then it would make 93.87% total

Octoplus is run by some third party marketing agency…who get access to your data. Beware.

    So get a smart meter
  5. TheDongMaster's avatar
ah but you have to have a smart meter? pass
    SirSpanky's avatar
No downside to having a smart meter imo. Nice never having to submit readings, get access to off-peak tariffs, and being able to check instant consumption. (edited)

Has anyone found how to redeem this? I've tried app and website, can't find anywhere to get this or anything else similar.

Why not on kids meals? Bit mean.
    TristanDeCoonha's avatar
When the kids pay for the energy, then they can have a discount.
  8. colin7777's avatar
Nothing special 25% offers are always around, 40%-50% is the target I look for
    TristanDeCoonha's avatar
Look at my comment above. Easily achieved

I've been with octopus for 6 months or so now and find their "offers" just noisy and complicated. Spin for this, octopoints for that, saver sessions, super saver sessions, thumbs up,.thumbs down .... It's exhausting (but I do appreciate a free weekly Nero!)
    94jdh's avatar
Strange, I've found the opposite, money off account, saver sessions made over £500, free coffee and sausage rolls, cheap electric at 7.5p/kWh and gas an average of around 4p/kWh......
  10. sr_387's avatar
25% off the power would be better thanks
    onlineo's avatar
Even 25% off the standing charges would be better!

Why can’t we just have our old Tracker rates back instead of these next to useless gimmicks.

Save 25% but spend 75% first that you probably wouldn’t have done!
    musicman's avatar
Tracker rates are still available to existing customers coming to the end of one.
I recently phoned up and signed back on to the tracker tariff.

Is this BS one of the reasons my energy bills are so expensive?! Stop! Just give me energy! I don't want your negligible discounts!
    Blizzarooo's avatar
No. Octopus is actually one of best gas elec company to use as others companies are just commiting daylight robbery on regular basis. At least octopus give us all these perks, can't really complain.
  15. stealth666's avatar
Instead of subsidising meals, just reduced the energy bills...
    blahblahblah1234's avatar
They'll have negotiated a very good deal with the restaurant chain.
The discount off the meal might be much larger than the cost to Octopus. The alternative would be a much smaller reduction on your bill.
  16. ramper777's avatar
You have to sell your soul and get a smart meter to be eligible. Needs to be added to the title.
    Gj9382's avatar
Nothing wrong with a smart meter.
Its laughable that people still think there is
  17. jimbobaggins's avatar
Spoons are selling pretty much the same type and standard of food, but for more than 50% less than their headline prices.
  18. pouster07's avatar
Best energy company I’ve ever been the customer of. Easy to understand bills, transparent in every way & the bonus of rewards.
  19. pako.pako's avatar

Get on tracker, get a referral link and you'll make that up before the 1st bill comes out.

Thanks - great offer. Finally a replacement for the previous 25% off Mitchell & Butler pubs through Meerkats which ran for several years.

Worked on the app but not currently on the webpage for me.

Imagine what the country could do (right or wrong) with the £100+ Billion wasted on HS2 and Smart meters.

I am constantly getting badgered by Octopus to have a Smart meter installed but where we live (rural N.Yorks) there is no signal. Will a new mobile mast sort this or I will I never be able to access decent tariffs? (edited)
  25. jungleboy123's avatar
how does this compare to regular offers or a tastecard? I might as well use it?
    Rolo09's avatar
With Tastecard you have to make a phone call to the restaurant before you visit to book and mention Tastecard. The restaurant can say they have "no Tastecard tables left" which means they are busy enough to not give the discount. Basically it's a load of hassle and tons of restaurants have come off it in the last 4 years. This offer does not require you to call in advance or even book. (edited)

  31. JackBauer123's avatar
Nice find OP, thanks. Shame they don't include the Ritz in the offer. 25% off the rip off that are standing charges would be better.
  32. IYBYISYL's avatar
    Any downside to joining Octoplus?
    TheWarmCoconut_'s avatar
    Author
I would say the only problem I have had with them was that they didn't pay me some bonus octoplus points, probably equaling to about £1.50. as an apology they sent me £5 credit after a week.
  33. Sephiroth's avatar
Does this take 25% off the whole bill (minus drinks) or just one meal?
    shirlsky's avatar
Up to 8 people. Meals only. That's the Toby T&Cs - might be different for the other restaurants?
  34. Essexnigel's avatar
Great offers they have lately, my wife gets the Greggs coffee every week. Will do this off mid week occasionally.
  35. poshaffi's avatar
If anyone wants a free code, can pass it over
    Maxm4n's avatar
    Yes please ...cheers
  36. 1234orange's avatar
