Well isn't this a lovely lockdown present. Mirror Money are reporting that Virgin Media are in the process of writing to customers to notify them of the £44 a year increase.

All phone, TV and broadband customers who joined the network before June 29, 2020, will be affected, unless the household falls under the 'vulnerable' bracket.

The average price rise is 4.0%, equivalent to £3.63 a month or £43.56 a year, the company said. Out of bundle call costs are not changing.

However, most bills will rise by between £2.50 and £4.50 a month depending on the exact bundle you have.

Customers on a fixed-price promotion, ie those who are still within the minimum term of their contract, will see their prices rise after their contract ends.

Virgin Media told Mirror Money it's currently writing to UK customers to inform them of the price hikes.

However, it said that if you are affected by the increase, you can leave your contract without paying any early termination charge.

This means if you're able to haggle a more competitive deal, or you cannot afford the price rise and want to strip down your contract, you can, within 30 days of receiving the price rise notification.

I recently received an email from Virgin Media stating I would recieve a price rise of £3.50 starting next month, lasting until the end of my contract.

I called them, and chose option 4 (changes to contract), option 4 again (thinking of leaving us), and was presented with an automated system offering a discount of, you guessed it... £3.50.

I'm not sure whether this discount cancels the rise, or just applies a discount as I've not seen my bill yet, but it doesn't alter your services or contract.

P.S I'm paying currently £35.50/mo for Mix TV, M 100 broadband and Talk Weekends, which should be £69/mo for existing customers, so don't forget to call up every year and discuss your contract with your supplier for a better price!
