Putting the heating on - When did you do it?

I have tried to delay putting the heating on & to be fair it has been quite easy not to do it. Until today.

I surrendered today on the 14th October 2023.

Let us know when you surrender or have you surrendered already? I am in Bedfordshire & it has got chilly.

Nope still plenty warm, even had all the windows open today to ventilate! Even had the washing out and it dried very nicely in a couple of hours! Advantages of living on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, a bit further south than most! (edited)

I think I'll be surrendering in a matter of days. Feeling the icy chill earlier as I get older!

Had mine on for an hour today. The temperature indoors has dropped to twelve degrees. Switched it off when it reached 15. Bit chilly here in Scotland

In Yorkshire, needed it on for a few hours today, too many health issues in the household.

Yes, that is an issue with people that need extra energy.

No chance in hell is it going on.
I switched the 4.5 tog quilt to a 15 tog last week.
Still got every window in the house open.
If cold wear a fleece or dressing gown.

Nah no chance. Missus has been moaning all day I'm cold etc. Told her to man up and put some jumpers on! Had all the washing out in the sun 10 degrees but still wet 🙈 might crack the electric blanket out later if she's lucky

8am today went out to the car and got wet and very cold, decided it was time for the heating

Can’t see it happening for at least a couple weeks yet. Temps start to rise midweek

From yesterday. Been freezing here in Scouseland

I did light the log stove today, as it was 10degrees outside.

About an hour later i was too hot

Some are turning the heating on. Outlaws for one. Office block I was in last week.
    Not us though.
Not a bad Idea to fire up heating to check it's working vs waiting as plumbers will be busy with failing boilers and stuck rad valves soon

    You so no that.

All the plumbers & gas engineers are raking it in from the moment the weather turns. To be fair to them, unless they are on contract or doing full installs they don't earn much money from March until the weather changes.

Not my choice but got put on a week ago and been on every day since

I want to have a comfortable temperature at my place, so it is running tonight.

I do not delay it. I don't want to walk around home dressed like an onion in multiple layers.

I'm on the south coast (sea front) and currently still in shorts and t shirt, I agree it's fresher out there now. Partner is wrapped up in a blanket tho...

Well if someone needs a blanket they either have health issues or that thermostat need turning

Probably mid-November. Still warm enough to leave it off.

That is what I was hoping for. But it has gone from very mild & sometimes warm to cold in a week.

Gave in for just a quick blast today, getting a bit nippy here in Yorkshire

Well, today it seems I am in the north. Proper chill going on. Two days ago was shorts & t-shirt weather,

Ours was today/tonight but not through my choice. Saying that today's the first day I've felt the need for a jumper in the house, I'm usually in a T shirt.

Mine will come on automatically once house temp upstairs or downstairs goes under 18C, hasn't so far.

The heating never goes on before 7pm anyway, but usually I aim for at least November/December before it's on consistently.

Most of today was warm, but admittedly it went on at some between 7 and now because the main room was cold, brought it back up to 19c and too warm again now. (edited)

The wind is a cold blast. We have jumpers on and kids use thick blanket downstairs.

Might buy a electric blanket this year and a weighted blanket for bed

I just left that decision up to my netatmo system

It would be interesting to know if you have had to override it anytime before March.

I boosted the heating today for 30 mins

About a week ago on and off. Its going down to 2 degrees at 6am

What county do you live in?
  24. MonkeyMan90's avatar
If it carries on then probably the next few days. I'm not into this put a blanket on or put a jumper on. When I'm in my house I want to wear a t shirt and be comfortable so the heating goes on. Bills aren't anywhere near as high as what people make them out to be (edited)

All depends on your house. If you have a 4 bedroom house that is a listed building from the 1800s you will be paying unless the walls a a foot thick. (edited)

Northern Ireland here - good read above. If it were down to me mine would not be on (I don't feel the cold much), but the others (including one with health problems) want/need more heat. Been on every day for a week or so since the temp has dipped suddenly.

Doesn't help that I live in a very old and quite large house with next to no insulation (solid brick walls). I'm in the brigade where life is too short and hard at times to feel uncomfortable through being cold. I set aside £400 a month for heating at present. Always have a surplus

Same NI on oil, 2ft thick stone walls, once it's warm it stays ok but takes a while to get up to 20c, usually use 2000 a year but we have done better this year on target for 1500, last 500 was in May and half left

As late as possible, as it keeps the mother in law away!

Think mine is going to have to be switched on for an hour in morning for when we get up. The downstairs is sooo cold when it’s windy because it howls through back and front doors. Sounds like something from a horror movie. Roll on mid January when the fitters come to put in new doors and one window. Budget won’t stretch to full house for window lol. (edited)

I put mine on this morning for a few hours as the house was chilly, it also served to test it and I was able to bleed the radiators.

Not sure when I will put it on again, usually hold off as long as possible now I have a smart Tado wall thermostat so can easily if I need to trigger it from where ever I am, so if I am at work on a late shift I can turn it on in the evening so the house is warmer for when I return home at 22:30. Put my heating on last night for a couple of hours to take the chill off the rooms. Needed to see if everything was working ok ready for the winter months.

Probably put it on enough to heat up the walls.

Not been too bad down south, been a lovely day today, cut the grass & got some gardening done.
Going to dip down to about 5c tonight. But the heating won't be going on yet.
We've splurged out on a dual electric blanket this year & connected it to a smart strip/plug, so I've been been test driving it this week, bloody lovely!

It is pretty much like the debates on mobile phone signals.

My 3 mobile has an excellent signal but I happen to live in a trough that attracts all the cold air from miles around.

Mines is on whenever the house drops below 18, so that can even be in the summer, so it's never really off. Just on less in the summer.

Mine's set to 17C but it's currently showing 19.5C so it's not coming on for a while yet I'd say (Suffolk)
