Cracking deal. Brace for the number of people that have never used a Mac to tell you that 8Gb isn’t enough in 2024. (edited)
    kiranmk2's avatar
8 GB is enough for casual use, but only just. I went into the Apple store and opened up a series of casual apps on the display M2 MBA - Safari with 3 tabs (BBC News, eBay and Apple), Mail, Photos, Music and Pages. This is the kind of thing that you might expect a casual user to have open at once. The RAM usage in Activity Monitor was 6.5-7 GB. You can imagine that streaming videos (especially YouTube) and/or opening more tabs will easily swallow up that final 1 GB of RAM (never mind opening programs such as iMovie) and you're into swap.

"Ah, but Mac SSDs are so fast you won't notice." True, an average user won't notice, but the ssd speed is cut in half on the base 256 GB units and over a few years you will get to the point where your SSD is approaching the end of it's write cycle lifetime (and when they go, that is a full main board replacement).

Problem 2 (for the user) is that over the years, developments in web page coding / features will likely mean that loading web pages takes more RAM than it does today and even a simple task such as web browsing may well cause swapping. This is something beyond Apple's control so they have no way of knowing what will happen in the next 1-2 years. I'm pretty sure even casual users won't be too happy dropping £1k+ on a laptop that starts to slow down on "simple" tasks within 2 years.

A further problem (for Apple) is that providing 6 years' OS support means that the 2030 version of MacOS will need to run well on 8 GB RAM. Still, that's a problem for another day when there are profits to be made now!

Don't think its really about 8GB isn't enough, but It doesn't really cost much for to include 16GB but Apple being Apple are going to make one beg for a 'normal/standard' spec at that price point.

Apple just takes 'the mick' to a new 'Apple' level

Not a hater and I just go to whoever offers the best for £££ but 8GB in 2024 regardless if one needs it or not is taking the 'Apple pistachio'

Ready for the, yes but, not that, but this, not interested, life's short....move on, brand/tech loyalties is a 'sickness' just go to whoever offers the best for you devaluing £££

Never mind 16 GB, an update to 12 or even 10 GB would have been sufficient to give a bit more life to these systems. It's a bit of a joke that the M3 Pro/Max machines got an update from 16 GB to 18 GB, whilst the M3 is left languishing on 8 GB.

What's the best deal for 16 GB +?

Yeah Apple Eduction has it for £1199 and you get upgraded to the 10-Core GPU when you upgrade the RAM

For those that might have missed it in the specs these now support two external displays (in clamshell mode). That might be a dealbreaker for some between this and the earlier models (if they don’t want to rely on DisplayLink).

As expected, people are shilling for the trillion pounds fruit company.

Do you realise how cheap 8GB of ram is to add? 5% of their upcharge at most, and that's being generous.

They're excellent devices, I can't dispute that. The M1 air was amazing for the time I had it. But 8GB ram is a joke.

If you're happy to pay over £1000 for a laptop that has 8GB of slow ram, and 256gb of extremely slow NAND in 2024, then good for you. But that doesn't give you the right to try to silence people who have genuine concerns about the lack of value here.

The new M3 MacBook Air 256GB model has its storage configured as 2 x 128GB, allowing for faster parallel data transfer, unlike the M2 series. (Source: Max Tech teardown). (edited)

I've been looking for a deal on the 15" M2 version but they seem to have dropped off the face of the earth. Especially the 16GB+ versions

Still available on the eductation store if you can get access to TOTUM, Unidays etc
  7. AJ1990's avatar
The craziest thing about this thread is how some people are finding reasons to justify a multi trillion dollar company's decision to include the bare minimum RAM in £1100 device. The question shouldn't be 'why do you need more RAM? ' or 'LOL, this idiot has probably not used a mac before and doesn't know how superior it's 8gb unified memory is!!'. Instead, one should be asking why is it OK to charge all this money and give the the least amount of RAM they can get away with or the ridiculous cost to upgrade RAM or storage when storage prices are falling like a rock.

Good deal on a new laptop, but the cult like behaviour surrounding Apple products is very strange. For some Apple can do no wrong and it's because of people like these that Apple feels it's absolutely fine to pull ridiculous stunts like these. (edited)
  8. Moss.b's avatar
People should just stop posting 8gb then less sales and soon they will be forced to start 16gb as base model.
    2la's avatar
Agree, buying anything with 8gb in 2024 it's a waste of money. Even 16GB is questionable! (edited)
  9. Jyoosi's avatar
You'd have to be sniffing some serious Tim Apple powder to actually believe that they do some crazy magic with 8GB to make it similar to having 16GB.

What they actually do is use the soldered, non-replaceable or upgradeable SSD for swaps.

For non-tech folk, they're essentially wearing your already low spec storage down significantly faster by using a portion of that memory to compensate for the lack of extra RAM.

But it's okay, because when your abused SSD wears out, you can just buy another MacBook, problem solved! 🙃

Not a hater, currently a M1 Macbook Pro (8gb/256gb) user, can't believe 3 years later Apple still think 8gb/256gb is enough. Cook wants to cook us as his dinner with cheap recipes.

If you can't find cheaper anywhere, it is hot but I will keep my MBP and every penny.
    Burger_it's avatar
What do you do that needs more?
  11. UKDEALWATCHER's avatar
I find it mental that they release new products with 8gb 256gb….
  12. Step_Sis_POV's avatar
I will always agree that apple takes the mick with 8gb of ram, however having had an 8gb m2 and upgraded to a 16gb pro for work, the 8gb m2 was still fine. As a laptop in general, the macbook air/pro is king, this is from someone who was using windows laptop for years. Granted most of the age group on hotukdeals is probably the age of my mum, M3 8gb is fine for general use and even professional use in most cases.
  13. benetron42's avatar
8GB on macOS is effectively the equivalent of 16GB on Windows, calm down
    deceneu's avatar
I agree...as people only listen music on Mac now days
  14. ATharma's avatar
8GB debate never gets old - both arguments can be true

    - I use a 8GB M1 for work for the last 3 years, 20+ tabs on chrome, multiple office docs, pdfs, Spotify - literally never had an issue with memory, it runs flawlessly

    - I would not try to use it for anything creative like photo or video editing though although tbh I think it would be fine for the majority of casual users

    - it’s still criminal that Apple don’t put in 16GB though for the price they charge
    DoctorMesmer's avatar
I use my M1 MacBook Air (8/512) for audio (Logic Pro) and video (Final Cut Pro) and have never had an issue. I’m not a heavy user of FCP but use quite a few tracks and plugins in Logic.

I agree with your points above and suspect that Apple’s strategy re 8GB RAM is to shorten its customers’ upgrade cycle, which is, at best, cynical. (edited)

8GB of ram is a joke if you don't need more you don't need to spend £1000
  16. Els1e's avatar
My phone has more RAM and storage than this, so I would find it hard to justify buying such a fancy CPU to be limited else where.
    deceneu's avatar
well, i will explain mate... the CPU is way more capable then any application requires...if you are a numbers guy and you like to compare numbers from geekbench etc....apple has brilliant CPU's....but in real life its an overkill.. there is nothing screaming good value with Apple.... its a complete joke...
  17. Oye's avatar
Would have bought if this was 16gb
    Jemmers99's avatar
Hmm similar to me, I would've bought if it was 32gb, let's hold out.
  18. Richard_Mathews's avatar
so in theory they can't make M1 obsolete for a while on Mac OS since the latest start at 8GB?
  19. brendanb581's avatar
If you're going to go for 8gb, you're better off just buying a cheaper m1 macbook air from 2020 which you can get for around £750 from time to time.

The m3 is pointless for an 8gb machine
    greatnameuk's avatar
Exactly ram is more important than the processor....M1. Vs M3 aint gonna matter much. (edited)

My £150 mini pc has double the RAM, and double the storage of this.
    TomBoyNI's avatar
But yet couldn’t do half the stuff
  21. Nilshah's avatar
I bought a 12 year old MBP from ebay for under £100 and upgraded memory to 16GB and storage to 1TB SSD and it works great.
Believe Apple has realized over the years that given their premium quality hardware, the only way people will upgrade in future is by soldering minimum RAM and storage in today's MB and cutting down OS update after 5 years even though the machine is capable of running latest OS with an inexpensve upgrade for much much longer.
So what may seem to be a good spec today is clearly not a good value for money for buyers in the long run. On the other hand it allows Apple to get buyers into buying a new one in about 5 years instead of 10 years doubling their profits in future. Or charge insanely more price for higher specs now propelling their margins.

A bigger problem is that people fall for this apple gimmick. That drives other manufacturers to follow apple and start building closed hardware.
Apple started the trend for non user replaceable battery and non expandable storage in mobile devices which most manufacturers have followed. (edited)
    Jyoosi's avatar
Thankfully non-upgradeable RAM and SSDs died out on pretty much everything outside of a few greedy outliers in the PC space. They tried to scam us, but they're two entirely different consumers.

Apple users just accept any old overpriced and overcooked steak, PC users will send it back until they get a fresh juicy rare steak and 50% off the bill as compensation for deceit.
  22. Raja007's avatar
Dont understand the logic of those who are justifying 8GB RAM in 2024 for a laptop costing more than £1000. If your usage is light and just want a laptop for basic tasks then you dont need the power of M1/M2/M3 chip and even 2013/2015 MacBook will work just as fine and smoothly. You can only utilise powerful chip best if it comes with at least 16GB RAM especially if you want to keep it for next few years. Apple is stingy with ram and harddrive space in order to sell upgrades for ridiculous prices.
  23. deceneu's avatar
does windows 10 integrates decently on MAC? OSX is garbage...
    greatnameuk's avatar
Nope... It does not since they no longer use intel processors. Hence why I am using a Microsoft laptop!

If you're planning to keep this for like 5+ years (which Macs often can do) I'd suggest going for 16GB RAM.

8 GB of RAM ideally suited to the modern-day demands of 2010. No joke, I just sold my 13-year-old laptop with 8 GB RAM on fleabay. My 3-year-old phone has 12 GB of RAM. (edited)

Stop moaning about ram. If you don't want it or think it's not enough, then go get more, or don't buy it. Simple! I had an M2 and an M3 Pro and what people don't realise is that Mac OS is designed to use as much available memory as possible. So yes, at 8gb of ram, you'll notice it's using nearly all of it most of the time, and it's because it's literally designed to do that!

A better debate is whether 8gb is enough for you. And id say from experience, unless you're looking to use Photoshop, Lightroom, or do video editing or coding or something, then 8gb OR 16gb is going to be absolutely fine. 99% of people buying a base spec macbook air aren't going to be doing any of those things. So stop panicking people.
    Jyoosi's avatar
Ah yes, let's all stop complaining about a trillion dollar company trying to milk us.

We should all just roll over and take it from Timmy boi. He knows best. Everyone should have £1000 Facebook laptops to go with their £1000 tiktok iPhones 🙃

Imagine being so biased that you tell other people to stop being rationale just because it goes against apples marketing... sorry I mean your beliefs

I’m a long-time user of both Windows and MacOS. Each is a tool for a job and for my personal use case,
MacOS beats Windows. For my professional use (O365), Windows wins out.
You’re possibly right about some of the coffee shop brigade, but that shouldn’t put people off getting the best machine/OS/apps for their needs.
I’ve never taken my computer to a coffee shop (except when abroad and needing free WiFi).

Apple is not the only company that has contributed to the world of personal computers / laptops over the past few decades from what I am aware of. Companies like IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Samsung, Nvidia and many others have bought their share of innovation in this space without using stealth corrosion tactics to the extent that Apple has.
