Got to disagree with some of the comments here. I've been to both Stockholm and Gothenburg many, many times... I even speak the language now So, while yes Stockholm is the capital and as a much larger city has arguably more to do, Gothenburg certainly still has its charms depending on what you want. It's much smaller, with the town centre walkable and full of museums, art galleries, shopping, etc, as well as lots of hidden gems of architecture and history. I spent many a wonderful afternoon just wandering around. If you get a day pass for the public transport or hire a bike you can visit Slottskogan, Gothenburg's main park which has a free animal park where you can see Elks, etc, for free. I usually grab a handmade pizza (£12) from one of several on Linnegatan and just sit in Slotskogan and relax... it has a wonderful ambiance and lots of art and secrets to find

Across from Slottskogan is the world famous Linnaeus Botanical Gardens which are also just gorgeous. Walking, cycling or hopping one of the wonderful rustic trams back into town you can visit Haga, a charming, old workers district full of cafes and interesting small arty stores, and even nip up for a lovely view to one of the two forts built to protect the city, Skansen Kronan. If you get to Skansen Lejonet on the other side of the city don't forget to try the world famous fresh ice cream from the Lejonet & Björnen on Danska Vägen!

If you really want to get out to nature you can use the public transport pass to visit the 40 kilometre square Delsjö recreational area which is forest and lakes literally almost in the town centre... you can wonder the old forests, collect chanterelle mushrooms, blueberries and wild cranberries, perhaps even swim in one of the many fresh water lakes, probably completely alone. You can even hire canoes or go to the sauna and spa at Skatås for a fiver.

One of my favourite days out is to jump the number 11 tram from the town centre which takes a picturesque winding route to Saltholmen and using the same ticket take one of the charming boats out to the stunning archipelago... what a simply beautiful place full of winding fishing villages, Viking history, glacial stone fields and polished smooth rock beaches like polished marble. There are wonderful little bays to swim in and explore the clear water. Getting the last boat home in the summer, having a coffee and Swedish cinnamon bulle, as they call it in Sweden a 'fika' and looking at the sunset is just bliss. I'd highly recommend Gothenburg for a traveller who wants a smaller venue but with just as much to do but not as busy as the capital Stockholm.
