How will PeakSave Sundays work?

You'll need to sign up to PeakSave. We’ll then get in touch to let you know when you’re up and running or the next steps to get involved.

  • There will be a half-price electricity event every Sunday all the way to the Paris 2024 Games this summer.
  • You don’t need to sign up to each one – once everything’s set up, we’ll let you know and we’ll automatically include you in every PeakSave Sunday.
  • During the five-hour events, use as much electricity as you need.
  • Your smart meter will tell us how much you used, and we'll work out your credit.
  • After each event, we’ll credit half of what you spent back to your account and the payment will show up as 'PeakSave Sunday Credit' on your next bill or online statement. If you prepay for your electricity, your credit will be automatically added to your meter each month - normally within 10 working days after the month ends.
  • Each month, we’ll email you a summary of how much you’ve saved.

I’ve been doing washing and drying on Sundays between the hours they say but my savings are only around £2.50 a month

it's the biggest scam, i shifted my stuff in hours only to save 0.20p or less, stoped bothering.

Octopus Agile is roughly a third off the capped price for electricity if you avoid using electric in the 4-7pm period (which is more than the capped price), the only problem for me is that the rip-off standing charge is now more than my electric use - Ofgem not looking after low use consumers, it has doubled in a few years. Judging by the accents Octopus has a UK based call centre, which works ok, btw. If you google search Octopus £50 you should find a link that gets you a £50 sign up bonus if new customer, or search this site.

Octopus raised prices recently too. I have been with their Agile tariff and left them. It looked like great prices they offer, but they are more expensive in monthly grand total than British Gas standard. As you mentioned, 4-7pm is bloody expensive, but that's when I am home most of the days after work and use electricity mostly. Yes, I have tried to play their game, avoiding peak price hours, but what a hassle it is. Felt like a slave to Octopus. No more! (edited)

AVOID British Gas....AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!

I honestly don't know why anyone would remain with this atrocious company if they weren't in my situation. Due to a smart meter with a firmware fault, the only company I could get an E.V. tariff with (for a long time at least) was BG. I'm now with Octopus who are superb. But man, I think I wish I'd just moved anyway, despite the savings.

Throughout my time with BG I had horrendous C.S.. The worst part is getting through to them, whether by phone or online, the queue is often hours, no joke. Try joining their online system in the day, you'll be one of 840 (or some other preposterous figure) in line, I'm genuinely not exaggerating. My account with them was always in a perpetual state of being moved to a new system which always was a problem in the years I was with them. It meant that some details were found on one page, some on another, and when I called them, I'd often have to be transferred because the agent couldn't access my details, being as I was on the new system. I cannot express how dreadful they are to deal with, easily the worst I've had full stop.

I logged a formal complaint with them eventually over the way one of my calls was handled. It was when I was trying to setup my EV tariff, and after waiting over an hour online the chat agent told me I had to ring a particular number, which I begrudgingly did, and then after waiting 45 mins the person I spoke to said I had to do it online because my account was on a different system...ARGGHHH!!. I told the agent I refused to accept this as I had come from there, and that she must be able to help or transfer me to the right person, to which she said in a stern and uncaring tone "Nobody at British Gas can help you if you don't go online to do it", I must confess I did lose my temper somewhat at this stage and barraged the agent with how awful a company they are to deal with (no swearing or anything, just obvious anger)....I might as well I shouted at the neighbors cat for all the reaction I got...I suppose working as an agent for BG they were used to it.

This deal could be for free electricity every other day, I wouldn't go back to them. AVOID!!! (edited)

You should be able to use it at all times without a price differential. You're heading down a rocky road. Soon only the rich can use it in.the day and poor late at night

I'm not sure why anyone isn't on the Octopus Tracker tariff? Prices have been very stable for the last year and average about 19p per Kwh for electricity and 4p per Kwh for gas. I can send someone a link too if they want to switch and get £50 (plus I will get £50 😁).
    Rimi's avatar
Octopus raised prices recently, so forget about average 19p per kWh. Nearly the same as BG standard now.
I tested tracker and Agile tariffs and in both cases paid more a month than on BG standard tariff.

Anyone saying Octopus is cheap and good are only looking for referrals and £50's into their account.

Profiteering from energy companies is an example of why so many people have lost faith with Britain and left. “Half price” lol - give me a break. I feel they’re laughing at us plebs. Forcing us to accept these smart meters so that they can grab all the data they want for nothing. These half price offers are purely about increasing uptake of smart meters. No better than McDonald’s offering cheap burgers to increase engagement with their app and grab cheap data on customer habits. No such thing as a free lunch in this world.

Rant over … morals aside, not taking up these offers out of principle is like standing in the way of a freight train. Thanks for sharing OP, even if I can’t stand the motives behind companies issuing these offers.

Outside of illegal activity, energy companies are not allowed to sell our smart meter data, it's consider personal data. At least this is what I've read. Of course, there have been many instances of companies not abiding by such laws, and so I understand the cynicism.

I completely agree with your sentiment towards energy companies in general, but I don't think the issue is smart meters. My issue is companies like BG, making MASSIVE, GARGANTUAN profits at a time when the public are being financially battered, while milking the consumer for all they can, and offering perhaps the worst CS I've ever experienced. They are a vile and toxic firm. I would say on the whole, Octopus give off a different vibe entirely (I know I'm starting to sound like a salesman). They're not perfect but they do seem to be innovative and have excellent CS and make the customer feel like they matter.

I think smart meters are a win-win for the most part, they offer customers insight into their usage (not if you're with BG as the web pages are so dreadful), but with Octopus I can see daily usage and even download a report with each 30min reading. If my energy usage is bothering me, I can see exactly when the most is being used, and with the in-home screen they give you, you can see usage in real-time. Smart meters also allow off peak usage for things like EV charging, and things like the clever Octopus Intelligent tariff are made possible with it. I'm okay with them.

Con artists have been scamming us for so long, they keep rising the prices willy nilly and then come up with a mediocre offer that does absolutely nothing or almost nothing to the bills...... Voted cold due to inflationary prices and scams of energy providers and their business practices.
  13. Dredder's avatar
It's not half price as someone else is paying for it. It's a Ponzi scheme.

By far the worse company & customer service !

They've lost a lot of loyal customers & have hardly ever offered anything back clearly this is there way of trying to win customers back. Who's sits at home on a Sunday? Where all up at 12mid day/1pm after a late Saturday night, go out for lunch as a family, don't finish till 2pm straight to my parents house/friends house till 6pm maybe even 7pm at times.
No offense to the OP I'm just saying Sundays most people are out and about at the pub, family or friends doing things outside regardless of the weather..

Anyway It would be stupid to keep all your dirty dishes and laundry piled up till Sunday where it's half price electrics

My smart meter stopped working in January and they said it could be weeks or months before it’s working again. I’ve just switched to EDF today
    Mortal.Wombat's avatar
Mine also stopped in Jan but started working again on the 2nd April. They didn't tell me until I called them to query why my march bill was estimated.

Apparently they have an internal problem with smets 1 meters.

I now have the delightful job of checking that they have charged me correctly taking into account the peak save rates when I charged my EV.

Reducing the rates for a few hours, Mr O'Shea's wage rise, whatever next from BG, I await with baited breath!

Here is 1 day last week readings and this weekend is going to be the same. Anyone still with BG should at least go with Octopus Tracker if no solar or batteries.

My leccy this weekend is going to be less than 1p KWh again and my export will be around 50KW if not more as I have solar and batteries.

    29p for 36.7Kwh Octopus Agile
Approx £10 with British Gas Standard so NOT just a few pence.
