Each to their own I suppose. In my opinion the Wii U is easily the best console for children of all ages, it's also the best family console. A great feature for families with a toddler and old children is the Gamepad; so you don't have to sacrifice the main TV in the living room. Also it's great for nostalgia, I buy games for the kids just for that reason alone. Children have to experience Mario and Zelda etc. Half the junk on Xbox One and PS4 are the same as the 360 and PS3 so may as well own those instead as a lot cheaper and a much bigger library of games. No child needs more than 20 games in reality so you could pick 20 amazing games for children on the Wii U and actually enjoy playing with them as a family.

Don't do this, many of the kids games for the PS4 and Xbox One are not great. I recently got a Wii U to go with our Xbox 360, Xbox One and PS3. Turns out it's probably the best console out there for fun family gaming, 4 player Mario Kart and Nintendo land with the kids is great fun.

If you want to play FPS games or GTA then sure get a PS4 or Xbox One but for great family/kids games Wii U is far better than the PS4 or Xbox One. The only exception might be if you kids only want to play Minecraft in which case a PS4 or Xbox One would be better.

Great, great console, truly. Solid hardware with an eclectic library of games, a dozen or so absolutely essential playing - in my opinion - and unlike trollers who snipe from the sidelines having never owned OR played said console or games, I own and have played them all.

Yes it is mario kart and lego city are the best my kid loves em and we still play 2 player wooly world I dont think we will ever actually finish that, he also likes pikmin 3 which I downloaded off eshop and he likes to watch me playing splatoon but he doesn't play that himself as its online and he will get marmerlised, its the best online shooter, fast and furious not for the amateurs like slow kids tbh.

Also xenoblade x is the best rpg since ff7 I've put 400 hours into it now, but thats not for kids, I dont think a 5 year old would be very good at it, probably enjoy driving and flying round the planet in the mech tho.

The games are great and I couldn't be without the likes of Mario, Zelda, DK etc but the weak hardware and shoe horning of the gamepad into certain games (splatoon) let it down.

The Wii U is by far the best choice of console for kids that age. It has the most magical, creative and engaging games for the minds of children... any Nintendo console always has and probably always will.

The game that's bundles with this deal though is strictly for the hardcore RPG fan parents, though... just so you know.

Disagree on a few counts. First, anybody who has played either MK8, SM3DW, Bayonetta 2, Smash, Wooly World, X, etc, etc, etc, can NOT describe the hardware as 'weak' and be taken seriously. Secondly, Splatoons controls via the Gamepad is entirely organic, but if you don't agree more 'traditional' controls can be implemented.

You can buy games in the shops, although it's much easier and cheaper buying them online.

For a 5 year old it's a great buy, especially if you plan to play multiplayer with him. Our kids love the Mario platform games (New Super Mario Bros U, Super Mario 3D World) and the party games (Wii U Party, Mario Party 10). Nintendoland is great fun with 2-4 players too. Check out Mario Chase, Yoshi's Fruit Cart or Luigi's Ghost Mansion on YouTube.

The Wii U gets slagged off by XBox/PS4 owners but it's actually a great console if you're playing with kids. (Another really good exclusive is Lego City Undercover.)

You make a good point with the gamepad, I'd overlooked that since I'm fortunate to have a dedicated gaming set up. When i think how much my brothers used to play gameboy I can see why off tv would be nice. Hey if you can get your kids to play some classics from the e-shop they will certainly grow up with a better taste in games that the cod kids!!

I own all of the aforementioned games, so i can play splatoon with my pro controller? No I can't. Look I'm not expecting PC performance but most of those games run at 720p with little or no anti aliasing. I glad you bought bayonetta 2 up because for a game that thrives at 60fps it spends most of its time in the 40's, the wii u hardware was simply inadequate for that game. I think the wii u is great but to claim no games have been impaired somewhat by technical limitations is just ignorant.

Did you ever play Bayonetta for either 360 or PS3? 360 had TERRIBLE screen-tearing, just shocking, and the PS3 port...historically bad. I'm currently playing through R&C(PS4), and while it's thus far plays and looks great, the drop to 30fps has definitely hurt it. So yes, even so-called more powerful consoles require compromises now and then.

As an owner of all 3 current consoles and a lover of nintendo I still don't agree. Mario Kart, 3d world, nintendo land, smash are absolutely great games. As you mentioned minecraft, the lego games, little big planet, ratchet and clank, knack and then stuff like skylanders, disney infinity (granted a potentially deep hole). If your child is 5 then I'm guessing you won't want to buy them another console until the'yre maybe 10 when ps5 or whatever comes out. I just can't see how the wii u will provide that much entertainment.

Exactly that, we got a Wii U having been given an N64 recently, my son was playing lots of Mario 64 so figured that a Wii U was a sensible purchase, especially given the amount of time he's used his 2DS. He still plays Minecraft on Xbox along with a few other games but has found that the Nintendo games have a lot more depth to them than the shallow junk that gets pushed on Xbox and Playstation.
