Whole load of new cameras being released over the next month or so, including the new Pentax K-r. Expect prices to fall as suppliers get rid of old stock and as competition heats up. Only buy if you need one now. Great camera though.

    Nikon fanboys are really blind!

Same's true of Canon, Pentax and Olympus fanboys in my experience!

It's a good deal. I used to have Pentax film SLRs and they were always good quality. I've got a Nikon D60 now but I'll happily recommend this Pentax as it looks like a damn good deal to me!

I bought this camera (with dual lenses) a while ago- fantastic little camera.

The best things about it (amongst great image quality, etc) which sets it apart from any camera in its price range, is auto exposure bracketing in the range +3 to -3EV. This isn't even advertised (the original specs list +1.5 to -1.5EV). But rest assured it's definitely there and that is what persuaded me to get this over all the other similar priced DSLRs.

Means you can take absolutely awesome HDR photos! (where you combine 3 differently exposed images)

    All,

For anyone thinking of buying this I will say the proof is in the pudding.

I bought this a year ago and it's fantastic, look at my flickr page if you don't believe me, I love the camera and the exposure bracketing is better than more expensive cameras.

Been looking at this for a while. The 50-200mm is not rated that highly. But at this price it is a cheap lens. The 55-300 lens combination is highly rated, but at £529 approx if you can track one down. Also lenses and I think the body are not waterproof, so if it rains, PANIC!!!, Or keep it covered and dry until the rain stops.
    Heat added.

simplyelectronics.net/mai…403 £519 delivered. But I don't know if I trust Simply Electronics, I know the other cheap site I found was a dodgy one apparently based in London, But just skimmed your card. ALso many people don't like the fact there is no focus in the view finder.

Without the focus indication in the view finder I would pass.

Given new cameras like the Nikon D3100 available for £409 body only I would spend a little more as you gain a lot!

I have just searched to see if simply electronics are safe and found

which showed they do seem to be quite a bit below par. Good to know.

That is a good find although its £100 more. I find the 55-200mm lens more than adequate for my needs.

Agree. Also Pentax k-x comes with image stabilization built in the body and that is a big plus.

I have a D90 and for this price range Id have the k-x, possibly a 500d with 18-55is or even a D5000 with 18-55vr. Need to handle a camera before you choose.

I've been thinking of a sub 500£ DSLR and the D5000,500D and K-X were my top choices.

The soon to come D3100 and D7000 will rustle the shelf space in the stores so I expect the D3000, D5000 and D90 to drop in price or have some good bundle deals.
The Canon 60D will make the 50D drop to a tempting price and the K-5 and K-r will make the K-x drop its price a bit.

I am keeping a close eye : cant decide between the D5000 or the D3100 ( from the US - as the D3100 is MUCH cheaper there) vs this K-x and the Canon 500D

dpreview suggests that the K-r is not a replacement for K-x "The new K-r slots into the Pentax line-up between the entry-level K-x and the enthusiast model K-7." If so there is no reason why suppliers will be looking to off-load the K-x.

Currys don't make it absolutely clear that the lens supplied are Pentax-branded rather than a Pentax-fit.

If this is the lens then it sounds a decent lens if not outstanding (not good enough for motor sports) "Summary
Despite its small size and low weight, this lens performs more than adequately. The focal range is ideal as a second lens on the cropped sensors of the cameras that it is designed for. (*istDxx range) Autofocus is perhaps a little dated and often has a last tiny jerk to acquire its final lock but is accurate once it is there. Pentax have done well to achieve such pleasing performance in such a small package for what is a very reasonable price." ephotozine

No doubt the D90 price will drop, it wont drop hugely or very quickly though as the only real replacement for it is the D7000 and that costs way more ( £1000+) so the D90 still seems very good value against it.

In layman's terms, what is the deal with not having focus indication in the viewfinder?

Last SLR I had was 25 years ago when you had to focus it yourself so a bit green on these things.

Yes, I'm sure it will but by how much. Looking at the best price on D90 (Camera price buster) the cheapest price quoted with one lens is £757, so the price needs to come down by a fair bit to provide fair competition to this deal.

Personally as some one who has not used SLR's before I did not find this to be a issue. If you are using auto-focus the camera does beep when it hits focus and flashes a green indicator as well.

Also on the live view faces do lit up when you are taking a group photo so that does help as well.

Finally (to me) it all comes down to how much you want to comprise in terms of features and price. And I'm more than happy to compromize on some features to gain on price and other features (HD recording, Live view etc).

Thanks for the reply Andy, so are we saying what it lacks is displaying WHAT it's actually focused on in the viewfinder rather than whether it's focused or not?

Yes, you are right that is what it is. But in the viewfinder you can see if the object you are tying to focus on is indeed being focused. When taking group pictues I find using live view to be more useful and shows the face it recognises so the problem is fine in that respect.

I understand its not ideal but I can live with it and I know absence of feature could be annoying to some people.
