The Case:The stainless steel case of the Seiko 5 Automatic SNKK71K1 measures at 38mm diameter. The design of the watch is simplistic and conventional as it is presented in a minimalist polished circular case. A recessed screw down crown is present besides the 4 o’clock marker, which allows the watch to sit comfortably upon the wrist without the crown digging in. The crown is presented in a golden hue, which creates a welcomed visual contrast. Both the watch’s open case back and the front of it are protected by highly durable hardlex crystal glass.

The Dial:The black dial utilises an uncomplicated layout which ensures that the dial always remains easily readable. It exhibits a subtle sunburst design and thin silver beveled baton-style hour markers and silver baton style handset that has been filled in with lumibrite material. A silver framed day-date display window replaces the 3 o’clock marker. The Seiko 5 logo is presented in black beneath the 12 o’clock marker.

The Bracelet:The bracelet of the watch is made from 3-link stainless steel that has been treated to a brushed finish. It features a push down clasp, allowing the wearer to easily remove the watch. The clasp is also engraved with a Seiko 5 logo.

Is 38mm a little small for an average sized guy? Never bought a watch before but I'd like to get one

I'd go as far to say the best watch in this price range above everything

Very basic movement that can only be wound by shaking the watch (you'll have to wear it everyday without fail). Easy scratch Hardlex crystal. Splashproof (you can do the washing up but anything wetter than that take it off). Doesn't hack (you can't stop the seconds hand) so setting the exact time is awkward, not that it matters because the 7S26 movement doesn't keep great time even if you do wear it all day, every day. Nasty folded cheap metal bracelet that pulls your arm hairs out. I respectfully suggest that these are a tad overrated and overpriced.

I'm not a Seiko hater or a watch snob. I'm wearing a 40+ year old Seiko Quartz 7546-8360 (my late father's watch) which still gains less than 5 seconds a month.

I don't have this exact model, but you 'can' stop the second hand by applying slight pressure to the crown without actually turning it. This is actually easier than a hacking watch as you don't need to push the crown in and out, just let go at the right moment. My 11 year old has it and he hasn't managed to scratch the Hardex Yet. Accuracy on the copy I have isn't bad. Needs a slight adjustment once a week maybe. I changed the strap as it wouldn't fit his wrist anyway. Assuming it is the same as his SNK381K1 you will need a 18mm strap. I think you would be hard pressed finding an 38mm automatic watch as good as a Seiko 5 with a display back etc for less money, unless you get it on the grey market. My Hamilton Automatic is currently £640 and there isn't much of a difference, I'd be quite happy to wear the Seiko instead. (edited)
