Remember the last time you were watching 'Star Wars: A New Hope' and thought to yourself, "Maaaan, it'd be ace if I could roll into that car park in a LANDSPEEDER!" Well, sorry, but that will never happen, but what will happen is staying in Luke Skywalker's Tatooine home, the Hôtel Sidi Driss.

The Sidi Driss hotel in Matamata is built out of 5 pit dwellings, an earthy silent tomb, it’s a tourists landmark and only costs only 15 dinars a night (£6).

The underground labyrinth of vaults and passageways was used as Luke Skywalker’s home for the first Stars Wars film and attracts a flurry of visitors. These “troglodytes” underground homes are traditional cave dwellings built 20 feet underground to protect you from the overpowering heat.

Niches carved into the walls serve as storage, and stone mill fitting are used for preparing couscous in an otherwise bare but clean dwelling.

The hotel doesn't have a website, you need to book direct by telephoning (05) 230005 or through the Tunisian Tourist Office (I've made that the deal link)

You can get return flights to Tunisia (Matmata has an airport too) from just £99, depending when you go

6070 Matmata Ancienne, Tunisia
Tel: (05) 230005
Capacity for 145 guests in 20 rooms. Restaurant and bar. From £6/night per person including breakfast.
Unless traveling off-season (November through March), reservations are recommended

GETTING THERE

Regular daytime service by louage (share taxi) or bus (8 daily) from Gabes (40 km). Specify Matmata Ancienne as some services terminate in Matmata Nouvelle 15 km distant. Daily service to Tunis (450 km) via Sfax and Sousse.

ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES

The small museum just behind the Sidi Driss Hotel keeps erratic hours but is worth a look. A trip to the scenic stone village of Tamezret (12 km) makes an interesting daytrip, as does an excursion to the tiny troglodyte village of Haddej (3 km) known for its underground olive press. Two buses a day ply the Tamezret route. The small Syndicat d'initiative near the bus stop/market in Matmata can help arrange transport to Haddej.

MONEY

No banks or ATMs in Matmata Ancienne. The nearest bank is in Matmata Nouvelle (15km)

Well I've been, I can tell you it's a load of old crap. First off (when we went) when we arrived there was (no word of a lie) 2, that's 2, smouldering bodies outside our apartment. Further investigation also revealed several smouldering piles of what looked like midgets! God knows what was going on there? We were then taken on a day trip to some palace, which was just weird. Must have been a fancy dress party the night we went, the music was similarly dreadful. We then took a ride to have a look at the vast expanse of dunes but by which time I was so annoyed I smacked the Rep, Bob clean in the chops and he fell off and rolled down a dune into a pit, which gave us a laugh!
I'll never go there again, you couldn't make it up!

If I had 'money', it'd be an interesting investment to buy the place and do it justice.

Colder than Hoth. It's a danger zone FFS, why would you advise HUKD members to go here?!... full of Tuscan Raiders and weird old men, not to mention the kidnappings the Jawas frequently do.

Terrible place, customer services are a joke. Served us soup the first night and didn't even give us any spoons.
I complained to the staff and they just told us to 'Use the forks'...

    I'll get my coat.

I went to, but found the staff awful. They wouldn't let me leave. Even after all my friends moved on - they just kept saying 'after the next harvest'.

I've been there too and it's in a really dodgy neighbourhood. When you go outside (up) there are all these sand people. They scare easily, but they soon return and in greater numbers.

We stayed here (2005). We travelled independently. There are no other shops or restaurants in the area, the food was very poor - a fixed menu included in the room price and they ripped us off over drinks - (we complained and got money back.) The rooms were very basic with damp smelling bedding (which isn't unexpected given its underground so no complaints). There are shared toilets /showers which are used by all the many coach partys that visit each day and didn't seem to get cleaned for the evening guests. Exciting to start with until you realise there is nowhere else to go. We had a nice walk in the area. To be honest it feeds on the Star Wars fame and is just a seedy tourist trap.

Been to Tunisia three times and its actually a nice place if you stay in a decent hotel I recommend a hotel in Port El Kantoui. I highly recommend visiting the Sahara too but its bloody expensive.
