I was in the Stockport Poundland today and surprised to find the following hardbacks stickered as 'Any 2 For £1'.

They're from a 'Banned Books' series reprinted by The Independent. 25 books in the series but I only saw the following in that branch:

Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
A Farewell To Arms - Ernest Hemingway
A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess
Metamorphosis - Franz Kafka

Amazing slices of literature for only 50p each!

Apparently, A Clockwork Orange was free with the paper and then the rest were sold originally for £3.49 each.

I doubt if there is an article that details the books being banned here, … I doubt if there is an article that details the books being banned here, as they never were. This sounds like the popular belief that the film `A Clockwork Orange` was banned in the UK. It wasn`t, it was withdrawn at Kubrick`s request. All issues aside, though, this is a great price for these books.

Lady Chatterley Lover and Spycatcher were banned here in the UK.

Always counterproductive as it just generates more demand.

Now we have the opposite. Everything is allowed. Can't find the wood for the trees lol.

Yeah it is a dreadful film, very dated, of its era. The book as usual is far better than the film. I love 2001: A Space Odyssey another of Kubrick's films which is almost timeless.

Just because they're referred to as 'banned' books does not mean they were banned in the UK, or within our life times. Many books are challenged, for whatever reason, and it only takes one school or library to decide they're not going to allow it for it to be, technically, a 'banned' book. Also consider that they were mostly written decades ago, when standards/beliefs/ways of thinking were different - a book might have been banned 50 years ago for containing swear words that we see/use all the time now.

Most of the time this makes these books interesting - first of all, because they're often banned for containing unconventional ideas, or encouraging people to question authority or challenge the system, or being satirical, but secondly because it's interesting to put them in their historical context and see just what was considered controversial, and why, at different times.

Of course this year 50 Shades of Grey has been banned in a bunch of schools and libraries. No surprise there - it's because of the sexual content, but I don't think it'll ever be interesting! I do wonder, though, if kids in those schools are allowed to read A Clockwork Orange instead...

Whether banned or not - a significant improvement over their usual fare -'proper' books for grown-ups. heat added.

Here's what I found on my local poundland:
    Borstal Boy by Brendan Behan
    Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway
Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton
A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
All Quiet On The Western Front by Eric Maria Remarque

Originally there should be 25 books in these so called "Banned Books" series, but that's all I could find on my poundland. Still a good catch as the books are really good and will be good for Christmas presents as wells.

Almost the same in the Redditch store.
No "A Farewell To Arms" but copies of Franz Kafka's "Metamorphosis". Was hoping to get a copy of Leonard Cohen's "Beautiful Losers".

Had the pleasure of studying 'Metamorphosis' for my German A-level (Die Verwandlung) - don't think I could handle the memories if I tried to read it in English oO

Redditch, Canterbury and Stockport (as mentioned above) are in completely different regions of England. Maybe Scotland is excluded or your store sold out.
